“Filthy”

The location of the hotel is beautiful. I enjoy quaint, unique and original - this hotel is none of those things. The court yard is uncared for. When you step inside you see that the wallpaper is hanging from the walls. There is a strong smell of dampness which is not disguised by the plug in deodorizers. The rooms are filthy, the sheets were probably clean but the blankets were disgusting with brown stains on them. The bathroom smelt of faecal matter and stale urine. The breakfast was stale - we did decline it on the second day as we were anxious to leave as quickly as possible. The place is filthy, the service is surly, I would never go back. I don't know how the place survives. If you are considering booking this hotel - don't do it.

“An absolute gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

What a wonderful place! One of the world's truly unique hotels. If you're planning on visiting Montreuil, this really should be your first choice. A charming, historic, one-of-a-kind-oasis in a charming historic town.
Like the town itself, this is a very special place, not your typical hotel but absolutely overflowing with character and a sense of timelessness that you're unlikely to find anywahere else.
The rooms are NOT what you would find at a Holiday Inn (or any other chain) so if you're looking for cable TV and the usual bland, generic comforts, then this might not be the place for you, but they are comfortable, quaint and memorable.
The courtyard is a fabulous place to unwind while enjoying an aperitif and the food, should you choose to dine here is some of the best we've enjoyed.
We are a couple in our 40s and brought my (70 year old) mother here as a birthday treat. She is a lifelong francophile and absolutely loved it.
The hotel is ideally situated for exploring the town (Montreuil is stunning) and a perfect place to relax and unwind after a a day of strolling around..
Patrick and Janie were absolutely superb hosts and I would definitely recommend the restaurant - wonderful food, excellent wine list and the lovely Janie's homemade desserts were quite simply exquisite.
We read one or two negative reviews before we booked here but we are SO glad we ignored them. This truly is a magical, romantic place. We're looking forward to coming back (without my mum!)

I stayed in the Hotel and truely loved the entire feel of the position within the town.....but I have read all the reviews and I can only confirm that the Hotel is shabby, run down and in very bad need of love care and attention...it is really unfortunate there is only one lady cleaning and doing every other chore that the Hotel requires, so inevitably the Hotel is musty, dusty and incredibly dirty.

We ate in the Le Patio and what a wonderful place, they asked us where we were staying which in fact where ever we ate and mentioned the Hotel de France we got the same reaction....:(

What a shame that this wonderful historical hotel has been left to disrepair....

I am rather amazed that people find this hotel charming and good value, it must be simply down to one's standards.

“Fawlty Towers on Acid”

If you like your hotels dirty, noisy and overpriced then this is the place for you!

Had this been a back-packers' hostel, charging $35 a night, then I'm sure we could have turned a blind eye to the dirt, loose wires hanging from the walls, smell of sewage in 2 of our 3 bedrooms, a shower propped up on bricks like a burnt out car, stale croissants (the worst crime in my mind in the middle of a town packed with charming boulangerie) and the insulting indifference of our British hosts.

Our total bill of $375 for one night in three rooms would have paid for comparable luxury in just about every town and city throughout Europe. I have no idea how this hotel survives as it is a throw back to the worst of the 1970s: bad plumbing, bad food, bad taste, bad hygiene and bad manners.

Setting a match to the entire place would be a blessing to the reputation of the French hospitality industry .

“charming hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

if you want modern soul-less clinically boring hotel accomodation then don't stay here but if you want a beautiful, historically facinating, character hotel that is possibly a little eccentric but great fun and full of charm then this is for you. Montreuil is a great French town to stay in and full of character like the Hotel de France and Patrick and Janie who run it and couldn't be more helpful
