As a lover of nature and more specific of poison dart frogs, El Valle is the place to be to find the 'Golden Frog' or Atelopus zeteki. It is not really a poison dart frog, but it is a species you have to have seen if you go to Panama. The 'Rana de Oro' is one of the National symbols of Panama and El Valle is the center where you have to go to find this endangered species.
Due to some fungus disease the Atelopus zeteki is practically extinct and is very difficult to find in nature.
El Valle offers some places where you can see this frog: the El Nispero zoo and travel guides also tell you there are species available in Hotel Campestre. So staying in Hotel Campestre is a good thing to do... Therefore we booked this hotel.
But, if you see pictures in the travel guides, they do not correspond with reality. The hotel is still there, but it is rebuilt at the time. And in my opinion the rebuilding process will never come to an end. The old glory which you can see on pictures of the hotel is not there anymore!
It is true, you still can see a live Atelopus in a cage, but it reflects the same state of decay as does the hotel.
The rooms are rebuild and are fine, but what about the rest of the accomodation?
Perhaps the perception I have has to do with the season we travelled (July), but what would you say if the hotel management tells you that you have to order dinner latest at 7 pm, because the kitchen closes at 8 pm. Fine for me, but you have to know that the hotel management leaves everything behind at 8 pm and you are on your own in the hotel till 7 am in the morning!
Luckily El Valle is not far away and luckily we had a car, since the hotel was dead from 8 pm on. The reception desk is closed and late guests can find their key and an note sticked to the door of the office. And since we were the only guests around at that time, these late guests had the impression we were the hotel owners and we were the ones they had to come to with their little problems.
So, to be short: the rooms are fine, the food is fine, the staff is nice if they are available, but at night you 're on your own. If you like adventure and are not afraid of being left alone there is no problem, but this is not what you could expect from a hotel with a respected name which you could believe it is if you plan your trip with some travel guides.
And by the way, they have a swimming pool, but with no water in it.
We liked El Valle very much, we do not need big luxury rooms and do not bother of being left alone at night. So for us the hotel was acceptable, but be aware of the situation you are dealing with!
