“A good place to stay, but don't expect too much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

As a lover of nature and more specific of poison dart frogs, El Valle is the place to be to find the 'Golden Frog' or Atelopus zeteki. It is not really a poison dart frog, but it is a species you have to have seen if you go to Panama. The 'Rana de Oro' is one of the National symbols of Panama and El Valle is the center where you have to go to find this endangered species.
Due to some fungus disease the Atelopus zeteki is practically extinct and is very difficult to find in nature.
El Valle offers some places where you can see this frog: the El Nispero zoo and travel guides also tell you there are species available in Hotel Campestre. So staying in Hotel Campestre is a good thing to do... Therefore we booked this hotel.
But, if you see pictures in the travel guides, they do not correspond with reality. The hotel is still there, but it is rebuilt at the time. And in my opinion the rebuilding process will never come to an end. The old glory which you can see on pictures of the hotel is not there anymore!
It is true, you still can see a live Atelopus in a cage, but it reflects the same state of decay as does the hotel.
The rooms are rebuild and are fine, but what about the rest of the accomodation?
Perhaps the perception I have has to do with the season we travelled (July), but what would you say if the hotel management tells you that you have to order dinner latest at 7 pm, because the kitchen closes at 8 pm. Fine for me, but you have to know that the hotel management leaves everything behind at 8 pm and you are on your own in the hotel till 7 am in the morning!
Luckily El Valle is not far away and luckily we had a car, since the hotel was dead from 8 pm on. The reception desk is closed and late guests can find their key and an note sticked to the door of the office. And since we were the only guests around at that time, these late guests had the impression we were the hotel owners and we were the ones they had to come to with their little problems.
So, to be short: the rooms are fine, the food is fine, the staff is nice if they are available, but at night you 're on your own. If you like adventure and are not afraid of being left alone there is no problem, but this is not what you could expect from a hotel with a respected name which you could believe it is if you plan your trip with some travel guides.
And by the way, they have a swimming pool, but with no water in it.
We liked El Valle very much, we do not need big luxury rooms and do not bother of being left alone at night. So for us the hotel was acceptable, but be aware of the situation you are dealing with!

“Remodeled and nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

I brought a group of 14 entomologist's to the hotel in early August for two nights. I've stayed here with groups every year for the last 3 or 4 years. The rooms and bathrooms have just been remodeled, and look great. Nice huge shower heads and nicely tiled bathrooms. No air conditioning, but ceiling fans are all that is needed at this altitude. It gets COOL at night here, and there's usually a nice breeze blowing day and night. I'll be back to Panama twice in 2012 and 2013 with groups of entomologist's, and we'll be staying here for 2 or 3 nights on each trip. They have a nice jungle area next to the hotel with a great trail. Lot's of birds and butterflies. There's also a zip-line adventure a mile or so away, which I've been on 3 or 4 times.

“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2011

I read in a Panama guidebook that this was a classic "Spanish hunting lodge". The signs called it a B&B. It was neither. The main part of the facility had been torn down at some point and there is no indication it will rebuilt.

The room rate seemed to be at the whim of the front desk and I was given a rate of $44, which seemed a bargain after the prices in Panama City. However, the room was dismal. It was large but had old furnishings. The bed was kind of saggy but I got a fair night's sleep anyway. The wind was blowing about 35 mph all evening and night and I couldn't get anyone to say if that was the norm. The noise from the wind and the others guests was excessive. The door between my room and the one next door had a 2" gap so I could everything going on there.

The bathroom window was out onto the main walkway in front of all the room and couldn't be locked or blocked from sliding because it was installed backwards. There were chairs right under the window so I was a bit worried about someone crawling in during the night or just looking in. There was no shower head and the flow couldn't be turned completely off so it dripped all night long.

The only good thing about the hotel was the trail 100' away that lead to a grove of square trees. That was pretty interesting and there were nice views from places along the trail.

Room Tip: Find another hotel.

Thank you for you constructive critic. In response to this critic we can inform you that the wind factor is NORMAL, this is due to the postion of the hotel on the base of the three mountains. We have recently remodeled the rooms and changed the furnishings including the bed with pillowtop to insure a well deserved rest. we encourage this client to visit us again, we will provide a preferential rate, for him to comment on the remodelations done.

“Lack of Truth in Advertising”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2011

A friend and I stayed at this hotel in 2010. At that time they had many plans for its renovation and return to its former glory. We vowed that we would not stay there again until the renovations were complete. However, while making plans to visit el Valle with friends the hotel's website indicated that renovations were well under way and upgraded rooms were available. Don't believe it! The only thing that has been upgraded in the past year is the price. Last year we paid $44/night this year we paid $66 for exactly the same room. It wasn't worth $44 last year - it certainly isn't worth $66 this year. If the renovations ever catch up to the fake pictures that they have on their website this will perhaps be the place to stay in el Valle but until then - stay away.

there is no lack of truth in advertizing, the website he consulted has not been updated since 2006, and currently is being worked on, as you can corroborate when you enter the rate page. The rooms have been recently renovated, fixing the noise filtration problems, and the decor as well as the furnishing. the price difference the customer is mentioning, is that 44.00 is a low season price, and 66.00 is the high seson price, these prices have been the same since almost 5 years. Now the prices have changed since we have incurred in extreme remodelation. we are willing in offering this client a discounted rate for him to revisit and comment on our remodelation process. in any case all the points mentioned have been taken into account.

“Camp atmosphere, gorgeous location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2010

I was traveling by car with my husband and another couple early December. We got to El Valle after sunset. We have never been here before, had no room reservations and no pre- set expectations. We had not expected to spend the night here so i hadn't researched the hotels. The first sign we saw on the road was for Hotel Campestre. We drove up and saw two people on the veranda waiting for us. It was otherwise deserted. We were shown two rooms that looked clean and comfortable and settled in. The beds were comfortable, the showers were hot and we could hear the wind in the trees. All of us slept well. The next morning we found the area to be incredibly beautiful. The hotel was a little strange. It looked a neglected hunters lodge from a bygone era. We were offered breakfast but could not stay. For the $76 dollars a night we thought it was a great deal.
