Believe everything you read in these reviews: Hamanasi is awesome. My husband and I were there for 8 days in January, escaping a bit of the Michigan winter. As everyone else has written, the services is spectacular. All the staff know your names. At first, I thought that was just a gimmick, but I quickly realized that it was the embodiment of their unbelievable service ethos: they will do everything you can to help you have a perfect vacation. Forget your binoculars? No problem, they'll find a pair to lend you. Want to go on a tour on one of the days it's not regularly scheduled? No problem, they'll try to arrange it for you.
We went into the adventure shop the first day we were there to line up flippers and wet suits, and my husband mentioned that he loved fly fishing but had mainly only fished in rivers, not in the ocean. No problem. Elvis (one of the diving guides) told him to meet him on the dock in 10 minutes and he'd show him some tips. Another day, my husband wanted to go on one of the specialty dive trips, but as a snorkler. No problem, not only did he go along, but they provided a guide just for him.
I would definitely recommend reserving the Hamanasi package. If you get that, then all you have to do is get yourself to Belize City, and the resort takes care of the rest: they arrange your flight on Maya Air to Dangriga, they pick you up in Dangriga and drive you to the hotel, they provide all your meals, and you have access to your choice of "adventures"--inland or dive/snorkel--with the number depending on how many days you stay. The adventures, staffed by Hamanasi guides, are excellent. If you like birds, definitely go out on a birding trip early one morning with Pedro, who has an apparently encyclopedic knowledge of Belizean birds. He promised us he'd find toucans, and sure enough, he did. You might also want to do some of the "specialty tours" that you pay extra for: we especially enjoyed the Monkey River tour, where we went by motor boat to a tiny town of 200 that is only reachable by boat, and then up the Monkey River and for a walk in the deep rainforest. That day, we saw a crocodile, bats, a coral snake, a boa constrictor (well, the end of its tail, up in a bush by the riverbank), and howler monkeys.
When you get back from your daily activities, you can relax at the happy hour and have Mark, a laid-back but very intelligent and funny Belizean, mix your local rum drinks. The food at the restaurant is good, maybe even very good, but not outstanding. But there aren't too many other places to eat in Hopkins, which is a charming but tiny, undeveloped town, so the package including meals is a good way to go. The resort is quite small, about 23 rooms, and the guests are very friendly: twice we were invited to eat with another couple at dinner. We stayed in one of the treehouses, which was very private, very spacious, very comfortable, and very clean.
The only problem at all is the bugs: definitely take a high concentration Deet spray and baby oil, which they say discourages the no see 'ems, but be prepared to be eaten alive anyway. Hey, it's the rainforest. I purchased some local salve that contained jack___ bitters [Tripadvisor won't let me put the full word!] and gumbolimbo, and it seemed to help more than Cortaid.
Finally, it's worth saying that all the Belizeans we met, and not just at Hamanasi, were warm and welcoming. It's a great country to visit, and if you're going, Hamanasi is a great place to stay.
