My wife and I arrived with great expectations knowing that it was a Shangri-La hotel and because of how others had described it. On arrival we were offered an upgrade to the RasaWing for 500 Ringits per night (and the Rasa Wing carries a number of benefits). I have to say that our overall experience was good (not outstanding) and if one compares the hotel with other 5 star estalishments in SE Asia and the Middle East then it just has to be an also ran. Despite the contention that sunbeds etc cannot be reserved there does appear to be a 'club' for the elderly long stayers (in the Rasa wing) who get their tables in the lounge for afternoon tea and then cocktails and their sunbeds alongside the pool reserved (probably without the full knowledge of management). Furthermore, whilst one is made aware that certain standards of dress are expected in the lounge for the cocktail hour these do get flouted, with staff offering blankets to cover the legs of male guests etc.
The rooms are certainly acceptable although not outstanding and the amenities are good. Overall most enjoyable but one must say that there are more exceptional hotels to e found in Malaysia, if not in Penang
