“5 star view - 3 star accomodations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

I will start by saying we LOVED the view. Beautiful any time of day. We were late for the whales unfortunately.

The apartment itself was clean and nice but missed some things that I think makes a 4 star rating valid.

The bed is a mattress on top of a wood frame and it squeeked every time one of us turned over or moved. A nice bed will go a long way to mitigate other issues with a room. The bathroom shower needs some attention - both from general appearance to issues with the plumbing and water pressure. It really needs updating.

It would be nice if the owners put some sort of sheet together with some recommendations for dinner and such as we only saw what I think was the manager when we checked out. In all fairness she did leave her cell number and we did call her with a couple of questions which she helpfully answered. We actually only saw one restaurant in Fish Hoek and we wouldn't have seen that if we hadn't needed to turn around - most of the food places were take out so we ended up driving to Simons Town and only found one restaurant open.

The deck was very nice and private and had a table and chairs to sit out and stare at the beautiful view.

I would recommend this place for families with children that want to eat in. If you are a couple that would like to do a little bit of self catering but have the option of eating out I would probably recommend another sea town besides Fish Hoek.

A beautiful apartment with stunning views. A truly magical place with very friendly service. A great location and some where rather special. The apartment was spotless. A wonderful experience.

“Good base for travel around the area-amazing view, but a bit of road noise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2011

Whale of a time was a great little place. We stayed in the Stone Cottage which was really charming. The views were amazing from every window! Unfortunately it is not whale season, but spectacular view nonetheless. It really had everything we needed.

There were quite a few steps to and from the cottage, but this was clearly communicated to us and we didn't mind at all-I thought it added to the charm. Along the coast there is a main road and a railway with a frequent train. This was the only negative about the location. The train was a bit squealy and irritating early in the morning and traffic ppicks up early so if you have the windows open you will definitely hear it. The residents' pool is right in front of the cottage, which was fine for us because no one used it, but it may be a little imposing if a bunch of people hang around the pool. There are separate entrances to the main floor and second floor that require different keys which also is a bit cumbersome. Mavis was our housekeeper and was very sweet and helpful. We didn't really see the office staff, but we didn't go looking either.

I would recommend this place to friends and stay again.

“Best place to stay in False bay, no binoculars needed to see whales”

We had a unbelievable holiday at a whale of a time, where nothing was a problem, and all the staff and management were terrific. The view of the sea, sunrises to die for, and the whales in the bay was beyond all expectations.
The apartments were spotless and serviced daily with such friendly staff.
If you want my personal recommendations for a place to stay in Cape Town, you need not look any further. You are so close to wine farms, cape point nature reserve, the famous boulders penguins, awesome deep sea fishing, stunning safe beaches and seafood restaurants. We had a great game of golf at Clovelly golf course on our doorstep.

“Majestic sea views of False Bay and Fish Hoek.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2010

I lost my heart at "A Whale of a time". This was not the 1st time that we stayed there. I love the place. From the balcony I can relax, read and enjoy the sights & sounds from the ocean. We have seen the whales last October 2009 must better from the balcony than from the whale boat. Fishhoek en Kalkbay are magical little villages - and you can see it from the balcony. The rooms are spacious, clean and the manangement is excellent. A Whale of a time is the best place to stay in the Cape! You explore the whole Capetown area from there. Charming! I love A whale of a time! I will go back!
