“Old World Elegance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I stayed at the Chateau 2x 2 days apart. I hiked the Tongarario Northern Circuit in between my 2 stays. The Chateau stored my luggage while I was on the trek. The staff is incredibly friendly and accomodating. Upon my return for the more expensive room at 220 NZ$/day, I was not happy with the 1st room's view, so they happily moved me. The rooms for 220 NZ$ are a little larger than the ones for ~179 NZ$ and the bathrooms are more up to date and the carpet is newer, otherwise the rooms are the same. My less expensive room # 102 had a carpet stain next to the mini frig, but a door opening out on to a roof that was great to sit on and watch the sunset. It also had the best view, albeit, a littl around the corner! But I loved the rooms. They are very quaint with old world charm. The hotel elludes a feeling of warmth and elegance and gives one the feeling they are in a very regal hotel in the European Alps. The lobby floor has a huge gathering room just off the reception with a huge bay window looking at the volcano with cozy chairs and couches. The firness area has a Nautilus bike and elliptical and a rower and a floor fan. The equipment works well and it gave me a good cardio workout on a rainy day. The pool/ huge hot tub is heated to about 90% F and was refreshing after a long day's hike. The sauna felt good after the pool.
I did not eat in themain dining room but ate in the cafe on the side of the hotel where the food was a little less expensive but very good.

“decaying grandeur but still lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

we stayed here for an intimate family wedding. There were some good parts and bad but overall it was a lovely stay.

we had a room in the new wing. meh... it was decidedly average, had bit of a musty odour about it so we threw open the windows to get the smell out... (how lovely is it though to be able to open windows in hotel!) I was impressed with the cleanliness of the bathroom from memory, it is a pet thing of mine, to check out vents in the bathrooms, if they are clogged with dust, it shows lack of attention to detail... this one was pristine. Nice to have a separate shower albeit a small one. I didnt have a hairdryer in my room but this was soon remedied.

as to the wedding, well what a lovely venue to get married. The food was superb and we have quite high standards. Breakfast the next morning was also very good so top marks on food.

The hotel itself really needs to have some money spent on it... carpets are threadbare in some areas. This hotel could be outstanding with some love and attention because the location is just gorgeous.

Dont skip a trip up on the chairlift to the top cafe on the mountain... expensive, but totally worth it... the views if the weather is on your side are spectacular.... make sure you wear something warm... even on a nice day, it's cold on the chairlift.

Thank you for your comments about your recent stay at Chateau Tongariro.

Our housekeeper thanks you for your comments with regards to cleanliness of the room. They do work hard at keeping the rooms clean.

We are constantly working on the hotel and we have been through several stages of refurbishment. Currently we are working on our original wing of the hotel the Ruapehu Wing and are part way through a soft refurbishment of curtains, nets, new bedding, we are refurbishing the existing furniture and have new TV's arriving at the end of this month.

Next on our refurbishment list is new carpet for the upper floors in the Ruapehu Wing in the corridors and public areas. Great news and this is due to start before the end of February 2012.

I am pleased to hear you enjoyed the wedding the Chateau is a fabulous place for such a special day. The chairlift ride with Ruapehu Alpine Lifts for the summer sight seeing it is truely breath taking looking down off the mountain to the valley below on a clear day you can even see Mt Taranaki.

“Chateau Tongariro”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I participated in the Tussock Challenge, and stayed over at the Chateau. The stay lived up to our expectations, but the service in the Pihanga Cafe was extremely poor, and we left without getting what we went in for. Unfortunately this soured our experience at the Chateau

Thank you for your comments with regards to service.
I have discussed this with the staff and management concerned and do apologise for any service short comings. We do endeavour to provide the best possible service and it seems that it was extremely busy in the cafe over that weekend.

Please feel free to contact me via our web page contact us page if I can be of any further help.
