I stayed at the Chateau 2x 2 days apart. I hiked the Tongarario Northern Circuit in between my 2 stays. The Chateau stored my luggage while I was on the trek. The staff is incredibly friendly and accomodating. Upon my return for the more expensive room at 220 NZ$/day, I was not happy with the 1st room's view, so they happily moved me. The rooms for 220 NZ$ are a little larger than the ones for ~179 NZ$ and the bathrooms are more up to date and the carpet is newer, otherwise the rooms are the same. My less expensive room # 102 had a carpet stain next to the mini frig, but a door opening out on to a roof that was great to sit on and watch the sunset. It also had the best view, albeit, a littl around the corner! But I loved the rooms. They are very quaint with old world charm. The hotel elludes a feeling of warmth and elegance and gives one the feeling they are in a very regal hotel in the European Alps. The lobby floor has a huge gathering room just off the reception with a huge bay window looking at the volcano with cozy chairs and couches. The firness area has a Nautilus bike and elliptical and a rower and a floor fan. The equipment works well and it gave me a good cardio workout on a rainy day. The pool/ huge hot tub is heated to about 90% F and was refreshing after a long day's hike. The sauna felt good after the pool.
I did not eat in themain dining room but ate in the cafe on the side of the hotel where the food was a little less expensive but very good.
