“Great fun, great hosts, enjoyed the animals”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2011

Our party of 3 women enjoyed our stay at the Big Bird B and B. The hosts were lovely and very friendly, and we particulary enjoyed the tour of the farm. We saw ostriches and ostrich chicks in addition to the miniature animals, and tasted an ostrich egg for breakfast!! Ross recommended a cave tubing adventure for me when mine was cancelled due to high waters, and my experience with Cave World was very good.

“like going back to long lost family home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2011

perfect place for people who value people's value in life more than material value,
but I was very happy with material value too! we stayed in one of room in main house,
it was very clean, room was so spacey and the bed may have been more comfortable than my own home bed! bath room was clean, ostrich egg omelet breakfast was to remember for life, my daughter was allowed to sleep with one of the kitten in her bed after playing with all other animals there, it is such a wonderful place for children and like, but what stay with you in your heart is not how accommodation was, but how loving and truly passionate about place they live the host are! I should had autograph from them!

“Remember this is a working farm....not a 5 star hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

Working petting farm, especially lovely for children. has ostriches, calves, goats, lambs, alpaca, kittens, cat, llamma, donkey, miniture horses, highland cattle....We stayed in the chalet and it had lovely views immediately over looking the ostriches. brilliant to wake on a morning to see the ostriches at the fence waiting and listening for you....We enjoyed feeding the animals with other visitors. The chalet has all amenities for self catering, but Anne our host had supplied some basic things to get us started, however the fixtures and fittings are somewhat dated and old....Don't stay here if you are wanting 5 Star hotel standards. Breakfast can be in the main house or a tray will be delivered to your room if you want.. We had part of an ostrich egg in the form of an omlette for which there is an additional charge. Home made bread and butter was most welcome. Adequate safe parking.....Our host Anne was a hard working dedicated person....

“Winter Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

We stayed at Big Bird for one night in the chalet ($100NZ). The chalet itself is not much to write home about, very basic, a bit dated, but functional. There is a small heater and a heating fan in the living area, which were totally adequate to keep the room warm. There is another heater in the bedroom and an electric blanket on the bed. The linen were clean and fresh. The family has a cat and my husband is very allergic, but the owners were really understanding and promised to have another alternative available if we weren't able to stay at Big Bird. My husband didn't end up having any allergy symptoms, but it was really nice knowing that we were taken care of. The fresh warm bread in the morning was great! The animals were also fun in the morning during the farm tour and the whole experience worth it!

Both Ross and Ann are VERY friendly and nice. We spent more time with Ross (he's really nice!) because we went caving with their son's caving company "Cave World" and he was our guide for abseiling. We did a cave tour (only $30NZ, very reasonable) and night abseil ($140NZ) with Cave World.

“A comfortable night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

The bed was comfortable and warm. The "chalet" could have been cleaner, especially surfaces and floor mats, but any discrepancies on that count were compensated by the diligence and charm of our hostess, Ann. Breakfast was delivered exactly when we had asked for it and we were treated to an introduction to all the animals during feeding time. Ann made an excellent restaurant recommendation = Huhu.
