“Loved Silks”

We stayed at Silks for 4 nights in late May with another couple and it was a wonderful experience. Sheryl and James were fantastic hosts and took super care of us! Each morning we met with James and discussed our dining options for the day. Both he and Sheryl were very knowlegeable about the island and offered numerous options for our daily activities. However, we weren't impressed with the other staff that filled in when they were not on duty. My husband being a diver tried to get someone to make a reservation for him and it was never done. He finally ended up making it himself. The property is beautifully maintained by a gardner who is also very friendly and told us a lot of history of the resort and the island. His plant knowlege is fantastic. Kubuli the dog was also a great amenity!! Make sure you take the time to stroll the gardens and take a nap down by the beautiful river! The rooms were very nice - including the upstairs one in the tower however, be aware that the bathroom is not on the same level in that room. We enjoyed our stay very much.

“Expensive, but a nice place to stay for one night”

We stayed there for one night and that was enough. We stayed in the "Tower of Josephine" room. It was quite beautiful, comfortable and well appointed. The bathroom was huge and luxurious. The gardens are beautiful. The river that fronts the property runs to the ocean. We lazily swam the river (about a quarter of a mile) til we hit the sea, then laid on the beach. It was a very relaxing day.

The food was fair. The pool was not worth swimming in. The staff is very nice though. This is not the place to be based while on the island. It is not located well. The only thing close to it is the airport. We stayed at Calibishi Lodges and at the Jungle Bay. They were well positioned for day trips.

Overall, it is over-priced at $300. I think they should price the rooms at no higher than $195 per night.

“Do not waste your money!”

Silks is vastly overpriced and there is nothing luxurious or boutique about it. That said, the room my wife and I stayed in was decorated nicely. However, it was small and lacking in the facilities that are offered at even the most basic hotels on the island, not even a chair.

The welcome to the hotel was non-existent. The receptionist was more concerned about our car being moved to the car park having unloaded our luggage than anything else. There was no offer of assistance with baggage. There was no introduction to the hotel, no explanation of facilities (of which there are extremely few), meal times or anything.

While staying at the hotel we needed to report an incident and while the supervisor on duty was polite, the general manger of the hotel was totally unprofessional, rude and degrading. She has also not replied to any follow up e-mails that have been sent.

The menu in the restaurant is limited and on the one night that we dined there, the fish was raw in the middle twice (ie having sent it back once, it came back in the same condition). We did eventually get the meal free but it was an unenjoyable hassle.

Another thing that you may wish to take into account, depending on how much of an issue it is for you is that in the Tower room (I don't know about others) there is no way of stopping bugs or mosquitos entering the room as some of the wall is open to the elements with no window or mesh.

We are regular visitors to Dominica, staying in a mixture of hotels and the family home. This is by far the worst experience we have had on the island. In no way can Silks claim that the price they charge is justifiable. Do not believe the description the hotel gives of itself. You will be disappointed.

Silks is vastly overpriced and there is nothing luxurious or boutique about it. That said, the room my wife and I stayed in was decorated nicely. However, it was small and lacking in the facilities that are offered at even the most basic hotels on the island, not even a chair.

Silks Hotel : The price that we offer is aimed for a specific clientele. Your concept of luxury might be different than other persons.
All rooms are equipped with small reading tables, lamps, chairs, long chair.

Silks Hotel : At the arrival to the hotel, the receptionist takes care of the guest offers, Local Rum Punch, Water, and shows the guests around the property, the garden, lounge area and the kitchen staff / Waitresses.
Yes the receptionist might have asked to park the car in the parking lot for the comfort of other guests.

While staying at the hotel we needed to report an incident and while the supervisor on duty was polite, the general manger of the hotel was totally unprofessional, rude and degrading. She has also not replied to any follow up e-mails that have been sent.

Silks Hotel : All E-Mails have been replied to, Rudeness was given when received.

Another thing that you may wish to take into account, depending on how much of an issue it is for you is that in the Tower room (I don't know about others) there is no way of stopping bugs or mosquitoes entering the room as some of the wall is open to the elements with no window or mesh.

Silks Hotel :In the Tower of Josephine All the windows have mosquito nets and to avoid the mosquitoes from the hole in the wall all that is to be done is close the door.
Silks Hotel has sufficient facilities for a 5 Rooms Boutique Hotel.

Thank You very much for all comments.

“Definitely not "luxurious"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2006

While the room was spacious and decorated in a romantic way and the bathroom contained a couple of nice touches such as two robes, this hotel is not, at this time anyway, what it purports to be.

We stayed in three different hotels on Dominica. This one was the most expensive and our least favorite.

One end of our room overlooked the driveway and on our second night there, some young friends of the staff skidded their SUV on the gravel in the middle of the night so loudly that it woke up even my husband who is a very sound sleeper. Later the same night, another character who was hanging around the place clicked on the outdoor light in the breezeway so that the other end of our room was flooded with light --- almost as though someone had walked into the room and flipped the light-switch.

The food was mediocre and overpriced. The chef wanted to make it seem as though it was our fault he was not prepared to cook for a vegetarian because we had not informed him ahead of time my husband is a vegetarian. This was not a problem at any other place we ate while on Dominica! The chef apparently had no fresh produce on hand which seemed strange on such a lush island. The coffee served at breakfast was instant and not even made strong enough. I felt sorry for the waitresses: They seem to want to do a good job but had not been adequately trained.

The flower garden adjacent to the hotel is the one big thing this place has going for it.

Silks Hotel : We take care of our customers every desire as soon as desired, within the romantic context of a little castle in between 2 rivers and a lush garden.

One end of our room overlooked the driveway and on our second night there, some young friends of the staff skidded their SUV on the gravel in the middle of the night so loudly that it woke up even my husband who is a very sound sleeper. Silks Hotel : Access to the hotel is supervised by security, gates are closed at 6 pm the chance that it was the staff's friend is very improbable ( Might have been a customer coming back from a late drinking night).
The character "Hanging" around the place is only a security officer doing his job to protect Silks customers. No lights are directed at any window of the rooms.

The food was mediocre and overpriced. The chef wanted to make it seem as though it was our fault he was not prepared to cook for a vegetarian because we had not informed him ahead of time my husband is a vegetarian. The coffee served at breakfast was instant and not even made strong enough. I felt sorry for the waitresses: They seem to want to do a good job but had not been adequately trained.

Silks Hotel : We usually ask all our customers when contacted via email, if there is anything that we should know about concerning the guests so that the best can be prepared and done for the customers, because all Silks is about is customer satisfaction.

Thank You for all comments.

“Wonderful experience- quiet and intimate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2006

We just got back from Dominica last week and stayed one night at the Silks Hotel at the last minute. We were staying with a group somewhere else on the island for an Eco yoga retreat and came to Silks for dinner and ended up staying the night to experience a new locale- as well as to enjoy some rest, relaxation and privacy. We had the Suite in the Tower which was phenomenal as are all the rooms on the premises. The food is absolutely fantastic and the service is personable, the environment intimate and cozy.

Evans, the Chef, was helpful and informative and gave us info of the grounds. If going for a destination wedding this hotel is the place- speak to them about what they may be able to offer you, but let me tell you the grounds are beautiful for pictures. I will look to post some photos at a later point but this place was a dream. It only has a few rooms which is part of its signature- you feel at home and removed from everything else on the island. Book in advance if you would like to choose your room.

You are paying for one of the best hotels on the island- however I do think prices were a tad expensive considering that Dominica is still a hidden treasure and the ratio of the dollar to the local ccy and we stayed during their low season- Worth the stay however as the staff works hard to please- Breakfast was amazing filling and very delicious- enjoyed eating it out near the pool and then dipping in for some sun and relaxation. You will truly feel in paradise at this place. I hope that they don't change too much or expand it too much in the future as it will take away from the ambiance.

Thank You very much, We do hope to see you at Silks Hotel again, so that your next stay can be even more enjoyable than the first one.
The hotel has no plan of changing, there will be an extensions happening on the next side of the river including 24 luxury cottages with private plunge pool, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and access to the hotel and the sea.
