I thought I would try something new with this review. We are to stay at Hibiscus for five days. I'll write a little each day.
Day 1. We arrived at Dominica airport and were driven to Hibiscus. It's in the middle of the rainforest served by a rough road. We were shown to our room by Nigel, also the cook of some repute. We had a tree cottage and although they are well maintained cosy and charming, they lacked certain essentials, a fridge, air con, and mozzie nets over the open windows. You get a noisy free standing fan but if you suffer from mozzies, this is not the room for you. This is the rainforest, so expect the little devils. I don't suffer from them but my wife does. They wait at airports for her plane to land, salivating in anticipation of her arrival, all over the Caribbean, The Far East and Scotland. We upgraded to an apartment, not so charming but with all the essentials apart from internet. You get a balcony and hammock no matter what your accomodation, chairs to sit out on and a table for your drinks. Now this is an expensive place to stay. You do get full board and tours thrown in (see website for packages) but I think so far it looks a bit overpriced. Dinner was fab, we are veggies and we have been in the Caribbean for five weeks, it was the best meal yet. All home produced.
DAY 2. A good night's sleep despite the resident dogs barking. Lovely breakfast. We then met Carina who monitors your stay. I needed to transfer some money to my card account in order to pay for our upgrade. Be warned, the only internet here is dial up. There is an internet cafe down the road (car not walk) but it was closed due to a fatal incident a few days before. Robbery apparently! GULP! We then met our tour guide and driver for excursion number one. Waterfall and trek. We got about halfway when the heavens opened (rainy season) and he turned back in the interests of safety. Spent the rest of the day reading on the balcony listening to the fast running river and sounds of the rainforest..Another lovely dinner even though we are now the only guests.
DAY 3 Food continues to be the best part of the accomodation. Went on the journey to the waterfall, which was about an hour and pretty nice. After a massive rainfall we lost the hot water in our 'semi-deluxe' apartment. Reported it, nothing done.
DAY 4. Nigel absent for breakfast and it showed. Old, soft cereal and a boiled egg and bread. Went for a trip out to Portsmouth and Fort Shirley. Trekked to the top of a pretty big hill, and down again. Still no hot water.
DAY 5. River tubing and a trip out to buy some souvenirs. Still no hot water.
DAY 6. Check out day. hot water back! Total cost for the five days including a breakfast this morning, three bottles of beer and a bottle of wine; $1368.85 US
CONCLUSION: A really nice place in the rainforest, good food and guides. Reasonable activities. However, in my opinion, overpriced and not good value for money. We were only there for five days so do the math. Two people at £1368.85 for five days is $136.88 a day per person. Ok so we didn't have to have a bottle of wine and three beers (wine $20, beers $3.45). I also carried out a straw pole in regard to staff wages which I have taken into account in my final conclusions. Hopefully some of the money we paid will find itself going to maintain the beautiful countryside that surrounds The Hibiscus Valley Inn. The staff are friendly and it's reasonably secure, you get a safe in your room and there is someone there at night as well as dogs. It's clean, there are ants and other small creatures around but you are in the rainforest.

Dear Valued Guest,
We want to thank you for your detail reviewed!
We like to know what our guests are thinking so we can make improvements where ever necessary.
Hibiscus Valley Inn is unique in a lot of ways. We offer a family atmosphere that our entire guest have experience one way or the other and have greatly enjoyed. We have excellent staff that are very friendly and that would ensure that you have a very good vacation.
We offer different types of accommodations base on our guest budget. We offer the semi-deluxe room, the very popular nature bungalow room and our family cottage all inclusive room. Hence base on our guest budget they choose which one will suit their pocket. We can proudly say that we are the most reasonable priced guesthouse on the island. Of course, we are aware, that some of our valued guests have higher expectation than others when it comes to prices. Hence the reason why we have different types of rooms that our guest can chose depending on their budget. Our room prices ranges from 33USD-110USD at this present moment, government taxes of 10% included. However, prices of guesthouses/hotels can be compared before booking with us.
We also have packages such as the combo and adventure package. Our packages are all inclusive packages. ALL meals (a full hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner), accommodation, tours with tour guide and transportation, site passes, pick up and drop off to the airport and government taxes of 10% and 15% are included. Our guest for this review chose the combo package in the semi-deluxe room. Hence all the above were included.
During the low season, we usually make improvements. We are this present moment adding a souvenirs shop, where you can purchase any souvenirs that you need and where additional toiletries can be bought. Our rooms have the standard amount of toiletries required by all guesthouses/hotels since we are a certified guesthouse that have met all the standard required. Our semi-deluxe room also includes a mini fridge, electric cattle with tea bags/coffee. Flat screen cable TV, air condition, spacious bathroom, and hot shower.
We do want to apologize to our guest though, regarding the lack of hot shower for the days that he mentioned.
We again want to thank all our guest for writing their reviews and helping us to know what improvements we need to make. Rest assured that we are taking your reviews into consideration and are making improvements accordingly.
Thank you once more.
