Enjoyed a weekend break here and was delighted with our room. We were made very welcome on our arrival and enjoyed some tea and home made cake in the very comfortable lounge. Our bedroom was large and the en suite bathroom of almost equal size.
The bed linen was of high quality and the view, whilst on the road side of the house, had splendid panoramic views of the hills. (No, not noisy at all. This is Mid Wales, after all!) Whilst tastefully furnished and decorated, the addition of a comfortable chair would be a plus. There is plenty of storage and flat screen TV but reading in bed is slightly hampered by the use of low energy lights.
The bathroom is of equal size and the toiletries locally sourced and of good quality, as are the towels. The bath is a large, freestanding bath with the accompanying, gleaming taps and shower attachments to compliment the style. However, it is a long way down from the top of the bath to the bottom and good arms are needed if you want to lower yourself gently! The bathroom, like much else, has style. Everything is also spotlessly clean.
Dinner has a limited choice and we understand there is a vegetarian option. We had the chicken - it was beautifully cooked and tender. However, the cheese souffle was a masterpiece - do ask if it is on the menu. The choice of wine at the Old Rectory is very good and comprehensive and is so reasonably priced. There are only 4 rooms for guests and this ensures that, whilst bookings are apparently taken for dinner from non guests, the tables are not crowded at all.
Dinner is not provided on Sundays but, if you eat out, the New Inn pub, about 8 miles along the road had little atmosphere and the food was, shall we say, ....ok'ish! We won't be going there again! There are, we understand, other pubs worth visiting and not too far away. As we don't drink and drive we asked for a bottle of red in our room for when we returned from the pub meal and we were a little disappointed to find it chilly.
Breakfast in the spacious dining room was another masterpiece with a very good choice.
The food is fresh, locally sourced and organic. A note about the limited menu - we prefer that as everything is freshly and beautifully cooked and it does taste so much better.
This is a B&B of quality and the hosts help their guests as much as possible. They are also rightly concerned about the environment and use local suppliers as much as possible with organic food high on the list.
In summary, we were made welcome by the hosts and by their two little dogs and we would definitely stay there again.
Room Tip: Book early - this is a gem.
