“Avoid!”

I have been going to this hotel for the last 25 years and after the experience I suffered recently feel compelled to write this review because standards have slipped alarmingly.
We live fairly close to the hotel and will often go in for a quiet drink and have also used the restaurant in the past and my wife can vouch for the fact that certain things on the menu are not always available. She had lunch there recently with some colleagues and was informed on being handed the menus there were no chips. There is a convenience store less than a 100 yards away for heavens sake why not go and buy some from there until your delivery comes in?
We had guests for the weekend and walked down to the Old Lodge with the intention of having some drinks and maybe a meal. As other reviewers have said it can be overrun with badly (not all) behaved children so we always pop our head in the door to make sure its child free before going in. If it is we just continue on to somewhere else so it does not really bother us but then again we are not staying there. There were no children on this occasion and just 4 or 5 other customers so we got a table and I went and ordered the drinks. I had just picked the glasses up and was about to make my way to the table when a child in school uniform appeared from a back room behind the bar and brushed against me, I thought that was strange as there was plenty of room to get by. I then realised to my horror he was in fact wiping his hands on my trousers! I berated him as I followed him across the bar to our table whereupon he turned around said his hands were dirty and launched himself at me and wiped his dirty hands all over me yet again. I was powerless to do anything with my hands being occupied with the glasses and just shouted out "who does this child belong to!". He was obviously not with any of the other customers because they were all as astounded at me at such bad behaviour. The child disappeared out of the room and a guy sat at the bar told the barmaid what had happened, she spoke to someone I presume to be the owner. We then heard the owner trying to talk his son(?) into coming over and saying sorry. He refused and then was escorted out of the bar by his father who was giving him a cuddle!! I strongly suspect that having been treated so leniently he will do this again to someone else without a second thought.
The owner eventually came over to me brandishing a j cloth so I could wipe myself down, I did not think something used to wipe the bar down was acceptable for obvious reasons and refused it. He never apologised either which added insult to injury. We finished our drinks and left as did other people although of course that may have been coincidence. However, if I had witnessed that happening to someone else I would have been out of there promptly.
I doubt an apology would have persuaded us to stay and carry on with our plans for a meal but the end result of this is the hotel lost a lot of money because of his outrageous behaviour.
I doubt we will return for some time if at all.

As previously mentioned the restaurant and bar were managed seperately by Chris & Claire Jackson and it is their children that have been referred to in this review, not the children of the hotel owner. The Jacksons have since left the hotel and the restaurant and bar are currently closed to the public while a suitable solution to running the business is found. The hotel bedrooms remain open on a bed & breakfast basis and we hope to get the bar open in the very near future.

i am writing this review as i have read the others and feel they reflect very harshly on the restaurant although sadly they do have a point the service at the restaurant has sometimes been good and other times been very poor which is unfortunate as the food here is realy second to none in gosport we have eaten here on many occasions on business and leasure and everytime very high standards unfortunately this is not reflected in the waiting staff you would not go wrong with some proper training as customer service skills is almost non existent from some of the staff the moment you step into a nice establishment like this you expect to be treated well, all this said i have still booked to come back at christmas with my family as i have said the food is superb just need to match this standard with the waiting staff please imnot giving up on this place as the food cant be beaten

“Terrible Service”

My father booked this hotel as the Anglesey was full. There were events on both the nights he stayed a birthday party on the first night and a wedding on the second although was advised of neither when he booked. The room was very small (I wish I had a photo on my phone to show how amazingly small) and the water pressure very poor, although eventually hot water did arrive (Dad found it quicker to boil his kettle in the mornings and fill the sink with the kettle). On the Friday night Dad and I went to the reception to arrange a wake up call which seemed like he was asking for the impossible and a newspaper in the morning. Needless to say neither happened, no call and the lady at reception said that they did not offer 'this service' when Dad asked for his paper!!!! Breakfast was poor and rationed, i.e not buffet style. Saturday night was worse with a very boisterous wedding indeed, certainly no need to have to leave his room to enjoy the disco. On leaving reference to the water pressure was ignored and not surprisingly no enquiry made on whether he enjoyed his stay. For the price paid this is a really really awful hotel with no concept of service. Probably once an excellent hotel from earlier reviews and now cutting everything to the bone to maximise profit.

“vastly overpriced for incomparibly rude staff”

Stayed for 3 nights with friends. Children on reception understandable as is a family run hotel but service generally to the worst level i've ever experienced. To be able to hear the staff slagging off paying guests sat in their resturant is quite simply not acceptble. The vulger language used by staff in the kitchen/ waitress just about sums up why I feel it my duty to discourge others from spending their hard earned money somewhere that blatantly has no respect for its customers.

“Vastly over-priced, shabby and unprofessional.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2010

Bad start: owner's small children riding their trikes around reception area. First room we were allocated was small, with twin beds placed end to end (only one had a bedside light). No chair or wardrobe - just a few hooks on the wall. After complaining we were given a larger and much better equipped room. However the carpet was very stained and the the decorative state was shabby - marks on walls, etc. Still only one bedside light! The service in the restaurant in the evening and at breakfast was very casual. Many items on the breakfast menu (e.g. fruit segments, sausages) were non-existent. On our second night, the very loud noise from a wedding reception in the hotel went on well into the small hours which prevented us from sleeping. This hotel has a lot of potential but needs a complete makeover and a more professional approach to its management and service.

We are very sorry to hear of the poor service you received during your stay for which there is no excuse. The hotel is now being managed independently of the restaurant and the comments that have been made on this site regarding the hotel side of the business have either been addressed or are in the process of being dealt with. We are currently working on redecorating the bedrooms and bathrooms as we realise the hotel is starting to look a little tired. This is an ongoing task but improvements can already be seen in many of the hotel bedrooms with fresh paint, new duvets and pillows and retiled bathrooms. The hotel is a popular venue for wedding receptions which of course generate a certain amount of noise but we do our upmost to ensure that hotel guests are not disturbed by this. There are no longer any small children living on site so any disruption they may have caused will no longer be an issue. We hope that prospective guests will give us the opportunity to prove that we have listened to the comments made on Tripadvisor and have taken positive steps to correct any problems.
