I have been going to this hotel for the last 25 years and after the experience I suffered recently feel compelled to write this review because standards have slipped alarmingly.
We live fairly close to the hotel and will often go in for a quiet drink and have also used the restaurant in the past and my wife can vouch for the fact that certain things on the menu are not always available. She had lunch there recently with some colleagues and was informed on being handed the menus there were no chips. There is a convenience store less than a 100 yards away for heavens sake why not go and buy some from there until your delivery comes in?
We had guests for the weekend and walked down to the Old Lodge with the intention of having some drinks and maybe a meal. As other reviewers have said it can be overrun with badly (not all) behaved children so we always pop our head in the door to make sure its child free before going in. If it is we just continue on to somewhere else so it does not really bother us but then again we are not staying there. There were no children on this occasion and just 4 or 5 other customers so we got a table and I went and ordered the drinks. I had just picked the glasses up and was about to make my way to the table when a child in school uniform appeared from a back room behind the bar and brushed against me, I thought that was strange as there was plenty of room to get by. I then realised to my horror he was in fact wiping his hands on my trousers! I berated him as I followed him across the bar to our table whereupon he turned around said his hands were dirty and launched himself at me and wiped his dirty hands all over me yet again. I was powerless to do anything with my hands being occupied with the glasses and just shouted out "who does this child belong to!". He was obviously not with any of the other customers because they were all as astounded at me at such bad behaviour. The child disappeared out of the room and a guy sat at the bar told the barmaid what had happened, she spoke to someone I presume to be the owner. We then heard the owner trying to talk his son(?) into coming over and saying sorry. He refused and then was escorted out of the bar by his father who was giving him a cuddle!! I strongly suspect that having been treated so leniently he will do this again to someone else without a second thought.
The owner eventually came over to me brandishing a j cloth so I could wipe myself down, I did not think something used to wipe the bar down was acceptable for obvious reasons and refused it. He never apologised either which added insult to injury. We finished our drinks and left as did other people although of course that may have been coincidence. However, if I had witnessed that happening to someone else I would have been out of there promptly.
I doubt an apology would have persuaded us to stay and carry on with our plans for a meal but the end result of this is the hotel lost a lot of money because of his outrageous behaviour.
I doubt we will return for some time if at all.
