“Exquisite!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2010

I stopped off here on a driving holiday around northern Spain. We were just looking for a bed on the Spanish side of the border so that we'd know we were in Spain, so we were not actually expecting anything great.

We had to ask around for directions and were delighted to find that it was in the "old town" (we were delighted to find that there was an old town!)
The Pampinot proved to be exquisite; from the big, stone floor foyer up to the large open landing it was like being in a very wealthy old private house. The staff were tremendous and carried everything up to our room for us.

The furniture all felt as if it were antique; dark heavy wood and obviously old. Our windows opened onto a narrow street full of washing but it just felt as if we'd gone back in time 400 years - delightful. When we lay down on the comfy double bed we realised that the ceiling was painted like a night scene with little starts picked out against a deep blue background. Better yet when we switched the lights out the stars shone as it appeared they’d been picked out with luminous paint!

Although Hondarribia doesn’t have much to write home about it does have an infectious sense of fun and tradition; from walking along the tiny alleyways of the old town, to the delightful parador at the top of the street and the families of locals ‘promenading’ along the sea front in the early evening it all felt very homely and a great place to stop off overnight

“Pure magic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2009

I have just spent 2 days at Hotel Pampinot and I can not possibly rate it highly enough. The staff were so welcoming and incredibly helpful to say the least. The hotel itself is stunning and really has the 'wow' factor that you so seldom see nowadays; the rooms really are beautiful and very comfortable. Although the hotel doesn't have a restaurant, breakfast is offered - do try it, it was delicious! A truly unforgettable experience and a hotel that I would genuinely love to go back to again - there really is absolutely nothing to dislike about Hotel Pampinot!

“A 'suite' stay in a historic building in the heart of old Hondarribia”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2009

The exceptional staff in this old city palace on Hondarrribia's oldest historic street made this an intriguing stay. We had a junior suite that was spacious yet cosy with a contemporary bath. Since it was early fall, the lack of air conditioning was not a problem. Each window opened to a tiny iron balcony and a view of the typical old homes of this quarter, high above the lower town on the coast. There was wine and fruit in the room, free parking and the always attentive staff made our stay a pleasure. We paid less in Paris for an equally nice room, but for a two-room suite, the value was very good.

This hotel was an excellent base for visiting Bilboa, San Sebastien, the cider towns and the Chillida Leku museum. The Sebastien restaurant two doors away was excellent, no Michelin stars or famous Basque chef, but still very worthy...and a better price!

“Amazing service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2009

I traveled with my Mom and Aunt (both seniors) and my 6 year old daughter. We loved this hotel. The staff was simply the best. Helpful, warm and efficient. This was a bit of a splurge for us but worth every euro. Our room was spotless and lovely. We are planning our next visit. Susan and family.

“A castle where we were treated like royalty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2009

The atmosphere here is very romantic and sumptuous. The staff is gracious and most attentive (and informative). The deluxe classic room was great with a huge modern bathroom and comfy beds. We were the only ones there except for one night. There was a fruit basket with a bottle of wine and bottled water waiting for us. There was ice in the evening. Internet was free and the breakfast was fresh and delicious. When you enter the old walled city, the mini castle is on the right, down the street as you enter. The beautiful Parador is a little further on (so if you go that far, you missed it), with a church in between Pampinot and the Parador. The parador was just TOO expensive.
This was worth it. Buffet breakfast included cheeses, ham (dried, cured), fruit, cereals, yogurt, jams, breads, crossants; all elegantly displayed in a bright cheeful room downstaires. We stayed 3 nights and were able to park out front. TIP: Park at the little orange pilons bec that is what they are reserving for you. Otherwise, the apparently have parking in the back. We loved the place. It was surprisingly quiet and we even had a tiny balcony. And we had the small room which was plenty big and in Victorian style.. Yet still very inviting and clean! The others must have been amazing.
We went to nearby Donibane for a day trip. It was nice, a seatown, with gorgeous scenery only interrupted by a lot of industry going on. (sad face)
TIP: Leaving Hondarribia: Go G3440 to Donibane ( a beautiful drive, reminds me of Big Sur) - at about km 13 (?) you will notice an ocean walk area on the right-it is an awesome walk to the rocky area overlooking the sea, meandering among the trees and sheep. We were virtually alone, great for a picnic or romantic walk. A bit uphill on the way back.
