I stopped off here on a driving holiday around northern Spain. We were just looking for a bed on the Spanish side of the border so that we'd know we were in Spain, so we were not actually expecting anything great.
We had to ask around for directions and were delighted to find that it was in the "old town" (we were delighted to find that there was an old town!)
The Pampinot proved to be exquisite; from the big, stone floor foyer up to the large open landing it was like being in a very wealthy old private house. The staff were tremendous and carried everything up to our room for us.
The furniture all felt as if it were antique; dark heavy wood and obviously old. Our windows opened onto a narrow street full of washing but it just felt as if we'd gone back in time 400 years - delightful. When we lay down on the comfy double bed we realised that the ceiling was painted like a night scene with little starts picked out against a deep blue background. Better yet when we switched the lights out the stars shone as it appeared they’d been picked out with luminous paint!
Although Hondarribia doesn’t have much to write home about it does have an infectious sense of fun and tradition; from walking along the tiny alleyways of the old town, to the delightful parador at the top of the street and the families of locals ‘promenading’ along the sea front in the early evening it all felt very homely and a great place to stop off overnight
