“Disappointing! Very noisy room!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Our room was very noisy due to broken air conditioning unit. Even when the system was switched off, this still made a noise and kept us awake every night of our stay (2 nights). There was no telephone number for Reception in our room so we had to go in person at 2am in the morning to complain, the Receptionist just said they would turn the whole system off. No offer for us to change rooms. When they did this, it made the room very cold! We mentioned this in the morning but they seemed very loathe to move us although the hotel was almost empty and we were too tired at this stage to move anyway. There was a sewerage smell from the bathroom. Large rugs in loung area of hotel stained in 2 parts. Upon checking out no offer of a reduction in payment or even an apology. The machine would not work to take our payment and we had to use our remaining cash which was inconvenient! Suffice to say, we are not very happy! No leisure facilities at all apart from an outdoor pool which was too cold to use. Restaurant good but very expensive with no set menu! Our intention of a short break was to relax and we came home more tired than when we arrived!!

Room Tip: Avoid Friar Jose room and the ones next to it, they have broken AC units and are very noisy and, alt...

Dear Guest,

We would like to thank you for chosen Pousada Convento de Belmonte and we are very sorry if you did not enjoy your stay as much as we would like.

We must inform that the noise of the air conditioned was due to a small damage caused by a storm that affected Belmonte two days before your arrival.

We look forward to welcoming you again.

Best Regards,
Liliana Andrade Silva

“This is THE place in Belmonte”

Stayed here for just one night on a week long tour of Northern Portugal. We had stayed here last year and once again were not disappointed. The reception staff are friendly and helpful (and speak good English), rooms are spacious and well equipped and the food in the restaurant is very good. We opted for the set menu which at €30 was exceptionally good value - plus the fact that because we were using a "Golden Age" passport, we used one of our 20% discount vouchers. Drinks didn't strike me as expensive either - €2.40 for a bottle of beer and about €4 for a glass of house wine. The whole place is very quiet with terrific views. Belmonte town is OK - there are one or two interesting buildings, some quiet quaint streets, and we found a pleasant little bar near to the town's park.
Very good experience and yet very close to motorway junction and within a very short drive of the very scenic Serra de Estrella and Torre - the highest point in mainland Portugal.

“silence is golden in the Pousada convento de Belmonte”

After a lengthy stay in my favorite city of Lisbon, we were off on a self drive pousada tour of the central and northern sections of Portugal. This pousada was our first stop. After a beautiful and long drive to the Estrela de Serra area, the Serra da Esperanca ,we were welcomed with this historic, old and very nicely furnished pousada. It was built from the ruins of a convent/monastery One felt like one of the many monks who passed through these halls and courtyard.Truly an architectural gem to explore . It was like staying in a living museum and it was certainly a treat for the soul ! THe rooms are all named after Friars and were large and comfortable. We had a magnifcent view of the valley and the pool area. THe pousada is located off the beaten track so to find it, one must drive through the quaint town of stone and up the hills until it appears. It is small and very intimate in the sitting areas around the bar, the courtyard and the very cool black bottomed pool .The pool was refreshing and it was very relaxing to sit and enjoy the changing light and vista in the early evening. When you look into the pool it goes on forever ! Umbrellas and lounge chairs are available with views of the mountain valley . We enjoyed a meal at the restaurant one evening and tried rabbit for the first time ! Delicious and great presentations for the meal with local wine. The staff were very helpful , always with a smile and a tidbit about the area to explore. For example, it is the birthplace of Pedro Alvares Cabral who is credited with discovering Brazil. Belmonte is a quaint quiet , getaway from it all kind of place. It is remote and you can hear a pin drop , thats how quiet it is ! Overall, a great start to the pousada leg of our journey and highly recommended for a stop to explore this hidden part of Portugal.

Not too far from the historical center of Belmonte, a converted convent with views of the valley below. Very comfortable rooms, interesting bar and lounge areas, and excellent breakfast buffet.

Really beautiful hotel in a wonderfully converted convent. Friendly and helpful staff, lovely food and large comfortable rooms. Perfect location to access Portugal's highest mountains and hidden valleys and a wonderful place to return to after a day's walking and sight-seeing. Practically perfect!
