“excellent hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2010

Hotel is inserted in an old convent, and the architect has kept the history alive. Really long corridors with "azulejos", chapel, cloister, quiet and comfort - and additionally a very good restaurant. Friendly reception. The convent is placed in a secluded area, but still very near the Lisbon highway, Estremoz and Evora. and very easily accesible.
Large rooms, historic furniture, comfortable. I suppose in high summer the rooms are still cool, because the walls are thick.
External ares include a swimming pool reached through historic courtyard, and a small lake, surrounded by nature trails. Highly recommended.

Room 126 (superior type) on the new wing.
LIKED
Bed
Sleep quality (the best ever found in a hotel)
Breakfast (first day)
Staff
Prices at the bar (€1 for a expresso, €3 for an Irish coffee)
Free wifi Net (with content control)
Bathroom with tub and shower
Amenities imported from England (shampoo, gel...)
Robe
DISLIKED
Restaurant (clams imported from Vietnam, rude employee...)
Room decoration
humidity after the shower (A/C is the only solution avaiable)
Dust in the air (near the church)
small windows (natural light very weak)
Breakfast (last day)

If you want a place to sleep, read, meditate, walk in a forrest, than we have to stay there at least 3 nights (like we did).
Seat in a table at the cloister with the foutain and just listen the sound of the water... it's incredible relaxing.
The effort to restore this ancient convent is remarkable.

Hotel Convento de Sao Paulo is purely magical. The location and panoramic view is incredible. The grounds and building are magnificent. The service was great. The restaurant was excellent. I've travelled to over 40 countries and stayed in literally hundreds of hotels, and this is a truly unique experience. Once not to be missed!!!

“Absolutely wonderful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2009

On our motorbike trip we went to Convento São Paulo in the mountains "Serra da Ossa" near Redondo. Instead of staying there 1 night we stayed there for 2 nights. This absolutely hidden gem is a well renovated convent with very nice surroundings and a gorgeous view almost from every place. The staff (everybody) is very friendly and nothing too much for them, most of them do speak other languages too. The rooms are nice and clean. they have some bikes, pool (small when hotel is full), snooker, hiking trails and culture activities. We only tried breakfast which was rich and with a lot of fresh regional products. From the hotel there are several trips that can be made; Évora, Borba, Vila Viçosa, Alandroal, Terena, Juromenha and lot of wineries nearby. The hotel organizes regularly art exhibitions, concerts and ballets too. The only minus is it´s not a very comfortable hotel for less abled and what would be an improvement is on the days that it´s very busy around the pool would be nice if there were more comfortable chairs/beds in the gardens. For a long time we haven´t been in a hotel that include beautiful place, super friendly staff, enough to do and good food.

“Stimulate all your senses”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2007

If you are interested in visiting the Alentejo (one of Portugal’s wine regions), the Convento is an excellent location to stage your various itineraries. Or, if you are simply interested in a quiet hillside eucalyptus grove setting to stimulate all your senses with vast grounds to explore, the Convento will fit the bill too.

The old convent feel is still quite alive and the staff is very helpful, even though not everyone is well versed in English. The prize room is the one with a huge terrace overlooking the valley if you care for the extra space and private experience of the outdoors. The restaurant in the almost cellar-like space will not disappoint you, however, be prepared to be somewhat knowledgeable of the local cuisine as the servers, while very pleasant, will have a hard time providing useful explanations in English of the various dishes on offer.

To get there (from the east-west freeway to the north of the Convento) count on driving for about 20-25 minutes along a narrow and windy road with several hairpin curves, so make sure to avoid the drive at night on your first attempt. The room rate is on the pricy side, but if the above features are worthwhile to you, you will surely get value for your money.
