“old-time hotel that's comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2011

This hotel is next to the historical center of Laerdal village. It's a small town of 10,000 with its own waterfall. The building we stayed in is the newer 1960's cinder-block construction, not the cuter older wooden building.

The room itself is good size - enough room for our luggage. It's pretty basic decor but still comfortable and clean. A small 15 inch tube TV but no desk. There's a small hallway to the bathroom with its own door - makes it less noisy if somebody is sleeping and another is in the shower. The windows open out to the main street outside - nice breeze. The beds are comfortable with down comforters. There's no safe but there is one in the lobby. There's free wifi & 1 laptop in the lobby for vistor usage. The bathroom is in white tile and reasonably sized.

There's a co-op supermarket directly across the street - very convenient. There's also the sole restaurant along that street as well - if you don't want to eat the decent buffet in the hotel.

Some areas for minor improvement:
1) There's no place to put toiletries in the bathroom. It's a pedestal sink & nothing else.
2) There's only 1 garbage bin - nothing in the bathroom.
3) They only place 1 bottle of body-wash - have to move from the sink & shower as appropriate.

Though the hotel is a little basic, I think most people will be happy to be in such beautiful surroundings.

“A family run hotel in a quaint spot.”

This hotel is an experience of how things used to be. The rooms were a good size but nothing great in the decor stakes. however they were clean and comfortable. We were lucky to get a room on the corner of the modern block which meant we had a small balcony and a bit more space. the nreakfast buffet was amazing and the dinner buffer was good too.
What makes this place special was the family who run it and the staff very hospitiable. They have several guest lounges and provided entertainment around a piano, had the fires burning and gave you the run of the place. Not so good if you just want to sit in your room, you need to get out and experience the hospitality and meet the other guests.
The town itself was a delight to wander through, very photogenic and an historic area.

“Pretty little town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2011

We stayed at this hotel for one night and were made to feel very welcome by the owner. Our room was in the building which housed the gift shop/reception/dining area and looked out over the street. The room was a reasonable size with an opening window but unfortunately the curtains were too small for the window so the light prevented us from getting a lot of sleep. Cars were also parked beneath our window which caused quite a bit of noise during the night.

The buffet dinner was plentiful with a good selection of food. After dinner a pianist played in the sitting rooms off the reception area and this gave the guests the opportunity to mix and mingle. I felt like I was a guest in someone's home. Breakfast was adequate but very crowded because of several bus loads of tourists staying at the hotel.

The entire hotel has been better days and could use a renovation particularly the hallways with the stained carpet. Overall we enjoyed our stay because of the welcoming staff and "old fashioned" feel of the establishment. Free internet in the reception area was a definite plus.

“Warm welcome, great room in the "old" part of the hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2011

The Lindstroem Hotel is actually two different buildings -- a rather ugly 1980s concrete block that houses reception and the dining room/lounge, and a lovely Swedish-style wooden house across the road in the old part of Laerdal. There is another older building that is used by the hotel, but not rented out, and a weird add-on to the Swedish-style building with more modern rooms.

We were offered keys to room in both buildings, to see which room we wanted. The rooms in the older building are a bit smaller, in general, but renovated to a high standard and quite comfortable; the newer rooms in the big hotel block are...standard hotel rooms. A bit bigger, but that's about it.

We chose the older part of the hotel and took room 557 on the top floor at the end, with a small sitting room attached. The room had two twin-sized beds pushed together (as did the other double we saw), both with iron bedsteads. An upholstered chair, two small side tables, and a small television rounded out the room. The bathroom was small, but the shower was good-sized (and quite forceful). The heating in the room worked almost too well (we turned it off entirely) and the in-floor heating in the bathroom was very nice. The rooms across the hall were currently being repainted, and it looks like our room was next on the list for renovation -- the floors in the whole house had been recently sanded and were awaiting refinishing, so it looks like ongoing work for awhile.

There is parking available at the older part of the hotel, behind the building. The old part of the hotel is in the pedestrian-only zone of the old town, and very quiet. The newer part is across from a co-op grocery and there is a little traffic on the main street.

We walked across to have dinner at the restaurants, which does a reasonable buffet at dinner that caters to tour groups and large bus-loads of people, it seems. Go early to avoid the hordes of people, although the buffet was well-managed and refilled continuously while we were there. Nothing spectacular, but pretty good food and plenty of it. Breakfast was the same--decent selection of hot foods and cold, good coffee. We arrived for breakfast after the tour-bus crowd had already left, so we ate amid the staff cleaning up the tables, but they were friendly and very nice.

Reasonably priced, good location, quiet room and some not-standard-hotel-room charm. A good choice in Laerdal.

Room Tip: Stay in the "older" part of the hotel

“great hotel”

stayed one night in hotel on route to Bergen. Owner friendly and helpful. We requested a room in the old part of the hotel and this was made available to us. The room was lovely and comfortable and spotlessly clean and I am very fussy about how clean rooms are in hotels. The room had wonderful views of the garden and mountains. I loved staying in the old swiss chalet style building, Would recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — charming 1845 swiss chalet-style building
  • Disliked — only stayed one night so cannot really comment
