A bit late writing this review, but we had an excellent stay at Balestrand Hotel this past summer. The hosts were very helpful, and while it wasn't as fancy a locale as some of our other stays in Norway (the breakfast was excellent, but rather basic) it was a perfect (Norway-level) budget-friendly quality lodging.
Dining options are limited in Balestrand, and the staff at the Hotel was helpful in making the best choices. We ultimately tried almost everything, but would encourage other guests to rely on the guidance of your hosts.
It was worth the extra kroner for a fjord-view room...we had a fantastic room on the top floor with an amazing view, and found it to be one of the most relaxing places in our two-week trip through the country.
We did get a chance to visit other lodgings while staying in Balestrand, and would return to the Balestrand Hotel in a heartbeat over anything else we saw.
If you get the chance, be sure to ask for directions from the hosts to visit the enamel workshop in Dragsvik. A limited selection of their work is available in the hotel lobby, but the experience of first finding the workshop and then spending time with the artisans led us to not only a great understanding of their work but hands down the best and most personal gifts we brought back for family and friends.
Look forward to returning when our budget affords it!
