“Not a 4* hotel by any stretch of the imagination - more like a very poor B&B”

We had been very much looking forward to our stay at the Villa Cannizzo on the basis of the strong reviews here and its flash website but in the end we were glad to leave and felt like we had been deceived. First of all, the Villa Cannizzo is not really a hotel, it is a B&B. It may be an attractive old villa but it only has a few rooms and offers very limited services. Clearly, though, the owners think that having a pool and sticking a cheap pink noisy portable fridge in the room makes it a 4* hotel - remember this is not an official or independent rating.

Our room was small and very basic and the bathroom was ridiculously cramped. The room opened directly on to the breakfast room. This, in itself, should be enough to convince you that this is not a proper hotel. Thankfully, there were no other guests staying at the Villa throughout our stay so we were not disturbed by them but the staff made plenty of noise both in the evening and from about 6am in the morning. We are not quite sure what they had to do given the lack of guests. They certainly didn't spend any time preparing a decent breakfast. The same stale bread appeared every day, the same yoghurts also - incidentally these were out of date on our last day. The fruit must have been there for weeks as well - it looked disgusting. If you didn't fancy any of this, there was not much else other than cereal - not exactly the spread you expect from a 4* hotel or, for that matter, any self-respecting B&B.

The location of the hotel is not great either. It is about 5km out of town just off a long drag of supermarkets, furniture shops etc. Clearly there was once a long drive leading up to the villa from the main road but this is now interrupted by a supermarket car park. We did have a decent dinner in the attached restaurant but as there was only one other diner, we opted not to return on either of the other nights. Having ventured into town on one of those nights, we returned to find the Fort Knox style gates closed (as they were most times we went in or out of the hotel). No matter how much we buzzed the buzzer or, after a while, honked the car horn, no one opened the gates. Eventually we drove round to the supermarket car park to enter through the restaruant and the receptionist claimed not to have heard anything. Quite what she was doing we can only guess but this was merely symptomatic of our overall feeling that the ameuritish staff enjoyed playing at being real hoteliers when they are nothing of the sort.

We would like to apologize to the guests for the inconvenience and discomfort they claim to have experienced at Villa Cannizzo.

We are very sorry that the room was not to their satisfaction as it was closed to the breakfast room, however if they had let us know we would have changed the room immediately for them.
The hotel was very busy during this period therefore the rooms surronding the breakfast room would have heard the guests coming to and from breakfast.

Our website, like that of our tour operator, indicates quite clearly the characteristics of our hotel, that it has at the moment 8 rooms, it’s location is 3 km from the town centre and that it is situated close to the shopping centre.

The size of our rooms and ensuites are of required standard and size required for the 4 star classification in Italy.

It is not our interest to decieve guests as our objective is that not only are they satisfied but that they also come back and visit again.

We can only sincerely apologize that the guests were left waiting for a few minutes at the gate, the reason we keep the gate closed is to ensure safety and privacy at all times. On the occasion mentioned by the guest we were experiencing problems with the video buzzer which has obviously now been resolved.
Unfortunately like in any business from time to time things can go wrong.

Regarding our breakfast again we are sorry the guests did not enjoy this, but this is a typical
sicilian breakfast provided in a typical Sicilian Villa. However we have taken there point on board and in future will provide a full continental breakfast which will also include cold meats and eggs.
The quality of our produce is very good as it is home grown and organic, on occasion it may not look the best but we can assure the difference in taste. Regarding the guests complaint about the out of date yogurt, unfortunately we were not advised of this on the day as had we been informed this would have been rectified immediately and secondly management informed to take this matter up straight away with our in house chef.

Finally we are sorry that the guest finds it necessary to call our staff “ameuritish”. At Villa Cannizzo the staff are professional and extremely polite and most other than the cleaners speak a high standard of English, German, Spanish and French.
As for the politeness and eagerness of the staff to help please read the majority of comments left by our guests which are all eccellent and good.

“Can't wait until our next visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2009

Spent 4 wonderful days here, just outside (5km) from the wonderful baroque town of Modica. The small villa has been renovated and decorated beautifully maintaining its original structure. The swimming pool is a wonderful addition to any short break where one can relax after a hard days sightseeing or work off those extra calories! The restaurant serves excellent food an at very reasonable prices. After staying in Modica itself on previous occasions I would definately return to to Villa Cannizzo, and hope to do so next year.
I'll give them an excellent rating next year when they'll serve some typical modican cakes for breakfast!!

“Lovely & charming, but limited”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2009

The villa itself is absolutely beautiful and set in a nice location away from the main road into Modica. The little breakfast room is pretty & quaint and the food was basic but good quality (pastries, bread, jams, yoghurt, juice, tea & coffee).
We had the only bedroom upstairs in the main house itself which has a little balcony and looks out over the garden/pool. It was basic but nice and the bathroom was good for an old house. We didnt see much of the other rooms (most are attached to the main house as opposed to in it) but I would assume they'd all be of the same standard.

The restaurant that's at the other end of the main garden served good food and delicious local wine for a great price (Menu del giorno was 13 euros each) but it was quite quiet and the menu selection is very limited.

The only problem we had was that we stayed at Villa Cannizzo in the 2nd week of May and while we caught the start of the summer weather, (25 degrees+ most days) the pool at the villa wasn't ready and we weren't told this would be the case before we arrived! They said it was because it was so early in the season which isn't strictly true as their season starts at Easter.
Being on holiday we did want some days just lounging by the pool, which wasn't possible as it wasn't open and there were no loungers provided anywhere - so we did check out early and move somewhere else. If you're there from June onwards I would assume it would all be fine!

Domenico who runs the hotel was generally very nice & helpful, but over the matter of us checking out early he was obstructive and didn't make it easy (demanding we paid for all the nights we'd booked for - which we didn't!) but once he'd agreed that we were only leaving as the pool wasn't open, he soon returned to his usual affable self.

Overall the villa is charming and we really loved it and were sad not to have been able to stay longer. You will need a car to get around the area though.

“charming B & B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2008

My husband and I stayed at Villa Cannizzo for 3 nights in mid September of this year. We absolutely loved the property. The building was a cross between the old and the new. The pool area was a great place to relax and enjoy the view of the roses. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We dealt mostly with Dominico. He was there everyday with his warm smile, willing to assist in anyway. Whenever we would venture out, he would make sure that we were equipped with a detailed map. We never once go lost. He was better than a GPS.
One evening we decided to eat at the restaurant on the property and were very pleased., The service and food were great.
We had a corner room that had 2 entrances; one leading out to the patio. We had great ventilation, not needing the A/C. The ceilings were high, giving the room an airy feeling. The decor was attractive and the bed was very comfortable.
If you are going to be in this area, I would highly recommend the Villa Cannizzo. In fact, we will defiantly stay again on our return to Sicily.
