“Truly gorgeous find in an amazing town!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

We adored Casa Talia, when we finally found it! Modica isn't the easiest town to navigate by car - but it is certainly one of the most beautiful in Sicily. And Casa Talia is definitely the best place to stay there. Highlights were the extraordinary view from the balconies and lush garden, the delicious home-made breakfast served al fresco with the aforementioned view spread in front of us, the friendly and informative hosts and personal, warm attention, and the very stylish rooms. (The beds are very firm, by the way, but I asked for an extra eiderdown which I stuffed under the sheet -and that was fine!) Talia was our favourite of the five places we stayed in during our trip round Sicily. My daughters (18 and 21) loved their elegant room, and were enchanted by the cute cats lurking around every corner of the steep steps up and down the charming route to the main street (5 mins max each way - but not for the infirm!) and the chocolate and cannoli at the Bonajuto chocolate shop at the bottom of the hill. Stay in Modica - a far more real and lived-in town than the more touristy Ragusa and Noto nearby , and just as interesting, architecturally. (You can visit those for the day - take Marco's advice, he is brilliant at suggestions, and we found Sampieri by the sea on his recommendation - gorgeous. Thank you Marco and family, we wish we could have stayed longer.

“My favorite lodging of our trip to Sicily”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

Casa Talía is a collection of little stone houses brought back to life as very special bed and breakfast by Marco and Viviana, a pair of talented architects from Milan. It was my favorite lodging of our trip to Sicily. My husband’s comment: “A creative architect with a real aesthetic sense designed this.” Sitting up in bed, the San Giorgio Cathedral was perfectly framed in the glass doorway leading to our terrace. Our room, Mediterraneo, had no drawer space but did have a wrought iron clothes rack with a long low shelf and the suitcases became drawers. Somehow that felt like a workable solution. The bathroom was modern; the shower was the weakest link with low water pressure and a plastic curtain. The flatscreen tv had two English-speaking channels.
Breakfast in the garden with the panorama of Modica before us was delightful. The marmalades and preserves were homemade as were the baked sweet items. The bread from a local bakery was the best we had in Sicily. We had some initial concern about the number of stairs required to get to breakfast and the garden. They weren’t as daunting as our initial impression suggested, but those with mobility problems would best stay closer to the Corso Umberto. There is parking a few minutes, mostly level, walk away. It’s possible to get to Modica Bassa by stairs, but we always took the car. I rated the lodging lower in the Service category because, by its nature, it doesn't offer things like room service, laundry, etc. Viviana and Marco live in a house in the middle of the complex, and Viviana was very helpful with suggestions.

“amazing views..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2010

We've stayed at Casa Talia for two nights, with three children aged 12,11 and 9. Quite difficult to reach with the navigator, ask the owners precise instructions before you get there, but then the view of Modica Alta is amazing!! Very nice rooms in old converted stone houses, some with terraces and some with gardens. Beautiful setting for breakfast, nice and rich, and very kind owners. Reaching the center of Modica by foot can be tricky because you have to go down (and then climb up) very steep stairs, but overall a very pleasant experience!

“A slice of nature perched above Modica”

We had two evenings at Talia, we wished we had more. Talia is situated above the main street in Modica (Umberto Uno) and gives you a wonderful view of the city. We had a great time just sitting on the patio looking out over the city watching the cars snaking up and down the roads and watching as people went about their days. You are a short walk (maybe 3 minutes going down the stairs, 5 minutes going back up) from the main part of town with plenty of shopping and some very good restaurants. With respect to the stairs, this is not a place for those who have difficulty with stairs or steep streets.

Talia itself is a collection of 'small houses' (bedroom and bathroom) each with a private area overlooking the city. Our room was clean and well organized. The AC worked very well though we had trouble with the wireless internet. The common areas are well landscaped and invite you to sit back and relax. Breakfast in the main garden area was very good and a great way to start the day. This is a very good base to explore Modica and go farther afield since you are rather close to the main highway. You may want to pack a set of ear plugs as the town's church bells can be quite loud.
