“A BIT QUIET FOR US”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

This Hotel is in a nice quiet setting on the edge of town with a great pool and really friendly staff. The hotel food was not great at the start but improved when the hotel had less guests because the chef had time to prepare the food from scratch.
The Hotel has a lot of europen people staying there who like to stay within their own company so as an English couple we found it hard to socialise with them and had to head in to town which wasn't what we always wanted to do. There is also no enetertainment laid on at this hotel and the bar closes at 12pm which can be a bit early on some nights.
I would recommend this hotel for a weeks holiday for complete relaxtion but not for families or couples looking for somewhere lively.

Room Tip: Go for one of the suites in the new buildings because they are very spacious and have good balconies...

my friends and i (teenage boys) were in malia last week and found ourselves at a less-than-acceptable hotel down the road from hotel matheo. on hearing from some other friends about matheo we decided to visit ourselves and even though we werent staying there, George (the owner) and his wife allowed us to use their pool and restaurant all week in the daytime. honestly the nicest people you will meet in malia. super friendly. if we ever go back we will definitely be staying here.

“Can't wait to return”

I stayed at The Matheo Hotel and will return again in September. This Hotel has a perfect position for the beach and Malia centre. Super poolside, very clean and a restaurant with a variety of good food. The Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. My room was the best I have stayed in Malia for the last 3 years, very spacious, airy and a fabulous view.

“Very very very good!”

Booked this up through Thompson, really couldnt believe our luck when we managed to book the Matheos suites Jacuzzi room. It really was fantastic, the room was clean, airy and with large windows and balconies all around the room it was amazing for viewing the fantastic views of Malia old and new town. The bathroom was a large wet room, with an open shower and a large jacuzzi bath, that you could sit in and relax after a hard day sunbathing, whilst admiring the views through the large windows.
Malia newtown itself was not really my cup of tea, but had a great nightlife. My boyfriend and I found ourselves going into the town slightly earlier and enjoying cocktails at one of many bars, then strolling into the old town for a nice traditional Greek meal. However there are endless amounts of restaurants in the town centre too, all seem pretty good.
The pool at the hotel is lovely, along with the friendly staff and the standard greek breakfast- juice, cereals, toast, olives, cheese and eggs.
All in all I would definately reccommend this hotel.

“A Haven of Calm amidst Malia Madness!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2011

My partner and I stayed at the Matheo Suites, Malia for two weeks in September 2010.

Malia was not our first choice of destination however when we spotted Matheo Suites on the Thomson website and secured a great deal we thought why not!

We arrived late at night and were offered a drink by the friendly staff even though the bar was just closing.

We were staying in the suites at the hotel which are a little away from the main building. They are very modern and set within beautiful grounds (olive trees, lime trees, lemon trees...). We were on the ground floor and our patio doors opened onto a very private terrace with beautiful views over the hills. The room itself was lovely - modern, fresh decor and lovely bathroom with wetroom. There was no kitchen but there was a fridge to keep our beers cold! The room was spotless and maid service was every day except Sunday. The rooms were cleaned well as we could smell the bleach after she had been in! My only gripe would be that towels were only changed every three days but we hung ours outside to freshen up so it was bearable!

The pool area was great. It too, was sparkling clean and there was plenty of sunloungers available all day. There was also a covered jacuzzi which made a welcome escape from the blazing Greek sun!

The bar at the hotel was great too. We only ever had lunch there but the food was fresh and tasty and the beer served in a frozen glass! Bliss!

The staff were all so friendly and made us feel very welcome. By the last couple of days the lady let my boyfriend pour his own beer behind the bar!

When we left on the coach we were all kissed and given a hug goodbye - never had that at any hotel I've been too!
It was a 10/15min walk down a back country road into Malia old town from the hotel. We enjoyed the walk (watch out for the hill though!) but it may be a bit of a problem for those with mobility issues or elderly guests.

Malia old town was lovely and I would recommend San Giorgio's restaurant as well as Kalesma and Odas. There is also a beautiful bar across from Odas where we had great service one evening.
As for the Malia strip - despite being young(ish!) and enjoying clubbing and nights out - this was not for us. It was dirty and smelly and the bars were all grotty and not very nice! We ventured own twice in the two weeks but didn't really enjoy it! If you like McDonalds, KFC and drunk Brits abroad then this is for you!!! :-)

The old town of Malia and the beautiful Hotel Matheo made our holiday! We would definately return!
