We read about this hotel in Conde Nast Traveller magazine a year or two ago. It was highly recommended for its food and we got a really great deal by booking it through the Small Luxury Hotels website.
We had wine, fruit & water in our room on arrival. The room was OK and the bathroom spacious, but it was really quite hot, no air con or ventilation in the bathroom and our room was on the road which was busy at all times. I would recommend requesting a quieter room!
That said, it was our only complaint. The first night we had a delicious meal at the hotel's casual 'winebar' restaurant over the road - great food, excellent wine by the glass and packed with locals enjoying a good dinner.
The second night we had a gastro dinner in the 'fine dining' restaurant which was 5 fantastic courses from the Michelin-starred kitchen plus amuse bouche & petit fours, all served with wines from the cellar. Franz Keller who owns the hotel & restaurant also owns vines and is a renowned wine merchant in Germany, so the wines are excellent (one of his team will take you on a tour of the cellars he has carved out under the hills, storing thousands of bottles of wine, if you wish, and you can buy wines to take home).
Superb service in both the winebar and fine dining restaurants, and English spoken by the staff .
The breakfast, which was included in the package, was amazing - a huge buffet of cereals, fruits, cakes, tarts, pastries, cheeses, hams, salmon, herrings, with eggs cooked to order, juices, champagne etc.
The Black Forest is a lovely area and this hotel is only 30 mins drive from Colmar and the beauties of that town and surrounding villages on the French side of the river, so the Schwarzer Adler is a great base from which to explore both sides of the Rhine (and you get a better breakfast here than at most French hotels!).
We would highly recommend it to food & wine lovers.
