I have just got back from Nice and stayed at the Sunset village resort. It is a lovely hotel with very helpful staff, but.......this hotel is in the mountains and is not easily accessible to Nice unless you hire a car.
We did not hire a car initially and from Cote d'Azur airport and got a taxi at the airport to take us to La gaude, it cost a staggering 65 euro. We thought that it was pricey but was told that you have to pay to get on the highway (15 euro) but it was told it is actually only 4 euro. The hotel told us that the cost should have been 40 euro.
The hotel is not near anything. The nearest bus stop is a 30 minute walk away from the hotel and it is up and down steep hills. We were told that buses ran on Sundays which they don't and walked to the bus stop to find that no buses were coming. After speaking to some locals we found out that the buses are not too regular and come when they like. It is a 2 hour walk to St Laurent du var which is the closest biggest town. we know as when we found out the bus was not running we decided to see if we could walk (not recommended!)to the next town to get a taxi and found out that St laurent du var is the biggest town!!!!! or a 35 euro cab ride. The hotel has a shuttle which can take you to the train station or where you need to go during high season for 40 euro. They did say that they could possibly do it for us but the latest we could be back was 19.00 - which is not good if you want to have dinner and drinks.
The hotel has a restaurant and bar. The restaurant has a limited menu and dinner ends at 9.00 and the bar closes at 11pm but when we tried to have dinner there they told us that the restaurant was closed and so was the bar as no one was there, which is not good for the guests as there is no where else to go close by!!!!! ended up spending more money on cabs to go to the next town to go out!
while out for dinner in St Laurent du Var we asked the waiter to order a taxi and then they came back and hadn't even heard of La Gaude, not a good sign, but eventually someone had heard of it.
We ate dinner at the hotel on Monday night and the food was below average, I had the filet du poulet and it was a dry piece of chicken -no sauce and a potato. - honestly it was very disappointing. We were the only people in the restaurant other than the staff eating and there was NO atomosphere.
There should have been some kind of shop on the premises as you have to go out for miles to get anything.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the rooms were extremely clean and the view from the rooms are nice.
BA left our baggage at Gatwick Airport so we had no luggage, so no toothpaste, etc. The helpful staff provided us with toothpaste, toothbrushes and lotion but it would have been nice to have had a little shop to provide you with the nesccesities like bathing suits etc as you are so far away from everything.
The hotel is fantastic for a quiet break if you want to do sports in the hotel, but you definetly need to hire a car as cabs are way to expensive. We spent over 200 euro just on transport for 3.5 days!!!
Rental Cars are approx 140 euro for 4 days although we rented a car for one day and it was 99 euro.......it is easy to get around but please note that the roads are windy and dangerous as it is on cliff edge.
The hotel itself is very nice and comfortable but not as a base if you plan to see the French riviera!
