“Not awful, but disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2008

We stayed here midweek nights the last week of August. I couldn't help but have the impression that the staff know they are in the midst of a stunning location and area, and simply feed off the region's natural charm.

We booked one of two apartments for 360 Euros a night. The room was huge, with a sleeping loft, and makes sense for a family. It has, however, some annoying quirks: There is no electrical outlet in the bathroom. The shower's great, but there's no shelf for soap or shampoo. There's also no air conditioning, which would be fine if you could open your windows at night and let in the breeze. Alas, one of windows opens above the restaurant kitchen's groaning generators, exhaust fans, etc., so that's not an option. The cable didn't work, etc.

Other little things: there was no towel hamper out by the pool, so by the end of the day, pool towels (weirdly mismatched too) were stacked up in a wet lump for all to see. The staff --when they appeared--were desultory and mildly disinterested. Not rude, just not present.

All that said, the common areas were generally lovely, and any minor annoyances drifted away over dinner on the patio, which was lovely both nights. Servers Irwin and Remy were delightful, and made the place worth the minor annoyances.

“Steer Clear. A complete rip off. Poorly managed.”

We found this hotel to be duplicitous. They changed rates everytime we called the hotel to confirm our reservation. When we arrived they had let our reservation go even though we arrived mid afternoon. They found us a room in the hotel for only 1 of the 4 nights previously reserved (although they promised at check in they would find a room for another 2 of the 4 nights -- they never did).

The buffet breakfast for 19 euros includes canned fruit. When they run out of any jam, croissants etc. they do not bother bringing in more. If you come on the later side of breakfast hours (but still within the time stated that it is served) too bad -- as nothing is refilled.

The rooms were not well maintained -- we had 2 light bulbs burned out in side table lamps. While this is nitpicky it is emblamatic of the care and concern the staff puts into supporting a good experience.

I have traveld around the world 2x; stayed at hotels grand and small; hotels in chains and independent hotels. This was the worst customer service I have experienced. Ever!

“Dirty rooms and bad attitude - very disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 April 2007

We were attracted to this hotel by pictures on their website and some positive reviews on the web. Above all we were attracted by the restaurant. It was a sore disappointment, and if we had stayed for the two nights that we'd booked it would have spoilt our short holiday in Provence. First the positive points: the public areas of the hotel are beautifully furnished, and some of the rooms may be too. The restaurant might be good and breakfast was. There are nice grounds with a terrace and pool. The area is beautiful - from the hotel there is a great view of Menerbes. So I can believe that some guests may have a good experience, especially in high season, when perhaps they try harder. But at the time of our visit the staff couldn't care less and the hotel was hardly functioning. The Fodor description linked from this site is unrecognizable as the same hotel! When we arrived we were told that the restaurant was closed (completely closed for each night, we later learned), although we had booked half board and I had checked in advance that it would be open. The manager handed us a guidebook to restaurants in France, offering to ring one for us. We were then offered a choice of two rooms (standard rooms with rather tired furnishings, but apparently quite nice - with their own little terraces). We chose one, but before long we discovered that the toilet and toilet seat (besides being broken) had very clearly not been cleaned. When I told the receptionist, his face registered astonishment. He came to look, and eventually realised that we were right and allowed us to move to the other room, though he did not apologize. It turned out that the new room was not that clean (cobwebs), the TV and heater did not work, and in the morning there was insufficient hot water for showers. When we checked out next morning, having cancelled our second night there, we politely listed our complaints to the receptionist (who simply frowned and said 'd'accord') and then to the manager, who, eventually, did apologize and, when we protested at the exorbitant bill, gave us a small discount. I was astonished that the staff did not dispute any of our complaints and yet were so reluctant to say a word of apology. This contrasts so strikingly with other hotels of the same notional level in this area, where there is a real emphasis on courtesy and hospitality (even the nearby Best Western hotel at Gordes was in a different league). In any case, this hotel is hugely overpriced even for its theoretical standard, as we now realize. They just seem complacent and careless. Once again, their good reputation must be based on something, so maybe later in the year things would have been ok, but my advice would be, with so many stunning (and cheaper) hotels in the regions - don't risk it!

“charme and country chic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2006

We stayed at le Roy du Soleil at the end of season; only a section of rooms in the hotel was open, but all services were available. Our room was on the garden level, decorated in bold red and cream : fabric covered striped walls with a coordinating pattern on the draperies and bedcoverings. Since this was in the new part of the facility, the room was shaped like a normal, modern hotel room -- square and non-descript. However, details like ceiling moldings and the decor made the place seem special. The grounds are spectacular. I'd love to come in the summer when everything is in bloom and the pool area is up and running. The hotel told us Russell Crowe and the cast of the Peter Mayle film being shot around the area all stayed there in the summer of 2006. We were given extra attentive service for cocktails in the bar in the afternoon and in the breakfast room for petit dejeuner. The only negative: the toilet in our room dripped constantly the first night, keep us up. When we reported it the next morning, the femme at the front desk looked at us with skeptism, saying we must have not pushed the flusher correctly. The problem had not been fixed when we returned at the end of day..and was still ignored when we mentioned it again (and once again, we got a skeptical look that anything was wrong). Finally, late evening while we were at dinner, someone tweeked it so it stopped the loud dripping -- there still was a trickle, but not so loud as to keep us awake. The thing started dripping again the next morning but by then, it was time to check out so we didn't care anymore.
