“Highly recommended - would definitely stay here again”

We hired the gardeners cottage for 10 days and used this as our base to explore the area. It was the perfect location, quiet and peaceful but with interesting day trips in all directions. It is well designed for two couples with both bedrooms having en suite bathrooms. The kitchen and living area is spacious and equipped with everything you need to make your stay comfortable. The hosts Tobias and Marco were gracious and knowledgeable. Their helpful suggestions for our daily excursions provided us with some wonderful options. We ate two meals in the Chateau and both were really lovely. We had two people in our party with different food intolerances and these were taken into account by the kitchen and lovely alternatives were provided without a hint of it being any trouble at all.

“How disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

This B&B could be excellent.
However, there was no welcome and the owners looked tired. They kept out of the way. Rooms were spacious and well decorated and beds were extremely comfortable. A blocked shower was fixed instantly. The interns tried to make us feel welcome and served us drinks and waited at dinner and breakfast to the best of their ability. There was some beautiful art in the chateau, painted by Tobias' father. However on the top floor there was a beautiful full length window with amazing views with about 500 dead flies lying in front of it.

There was evidence that things had gotten out of control - weeds in the large pretty garden and the ash trays on the terrace were full of cigarette butts and water. They smelt bad.

The dinner and breakfasts were very good but the atmosphere was flat.
This place could be outstanding but I could not recommend it at the moment.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2010

I have to say I was quite disappointed in Chateau Les Roches. The building itself was fine, but I was expecting a welcome from the hosts, or at least an introduction would have been good. We have a business which involves taking small groups of people on a guided tour in Europe, so we are always looking for attractive accommodation for our groups. From looking at the website & reading the reviews on Tripadvisor, it seemed that Les Roches would be ideal ... charming rooms, friendly hosts & animals, meal arrangements would be made etc. The reality was rather different. When we arrived we were met by one of the students & given the keys to our rooms. I had asked by email if a meal could be reserved in the village for that night, & to reserve the Bistro meal in-house for the second night, neither of which had been done. Although they knew that we were a group of 5 people there was only a table for 4 for breakfast (plus other tables, of course). We actually never formally met the owners, nobody spoke to us during the meals, not even the other guests. And we never saw the dogs!! The only time I really spoke to one of the owners (I still don't know who they are) was when he came to take the credit card payment.
I'm really not that fussy, but I do like to take our clients to friendly places, where they can enjoy the ambience & chat to others, & this simply didn't happen. I had intended that Les Roches would have been the place I would have continued to take our clients, as the chateau in Noyers-sur-Surein, which we always used to use, had been sold. But after our stay I decided to look elsewhere, & discovered that the previous chateau is open for business again, so that really solves my problem! But if the hosts had been more welcoming & prepared to give up a little time to talk with us, we may well have stayed there again. I have to say that our clients certainly didn't feel welcome.

We try to meet and greet all our guests when possible but the reality is that we also need to go shopping for food, do various errands for the business, meet with friends, etc. but we do ensure that we have someone (in this case interns from Swiss hotel management schools) occupying our front desk to welcome our expected guests, give them a short tour of the public rooms, explain breakfast location and times, show them to the guest bedrooms, etc.

During your stay, I (Tobias) personally served you, your husband and your three clients each morning for breakfast. Marco even served your husband coffee in the salon as he came down earlier than yourself and your three clients. Your clients came down for breakfast each morning at 8:00 am and I remember chatting to them (and your husband) about the house, our village, area, etc. Your husband even told me about your B&B in New Zealand and your son runs it when you are traveling. You normally came down for breakfast around 8:30 pm when your clients had pretty much finished.

I do not think it is necessary to introduce myself as the “owner” (as I think it could be perceived as a little arrogant) but I do introduce myself as just “Tobias” to our guests. Perhaps you mistook me for one of the interns?

As for our dogs, they are always around (often sleeping in the library in mornings though)…

We did book you in for dinner at Les Roches and you did have the Bistro dinner on the Monday during your stay… I was around for dinner too :-)

You had also reserved three bedrooms for a month later but you told us that you needed to cancel the reservation upon check-out as you could not get a group together for that trip. I am sure you knew that you needed to cancel the second reservation well before you told us and I find this disappointing and unprofessional given that you are in the same business and it is just courteous to allow us to release the bedrooms as soon as one knows of a cancellation (we had actually turned away guests for the reserved dates held for you).

“Remote hideaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

We found this wonderfully remote hideaway on another website but are glad we visited. Its a gorgeous old french chateau with lovely landscaped gardens in an isolated old village. It is ideally located if you are doing a number of wine tours but is a long way off the beaten path.

They serve decent food but check the website as the set course menu on the weekends is supposed to be the highlight. We had the bistro-type affair mid-week and it was average at best. That being said, the breakfast was very good with a broad range of choices.

“Incredibly rude owners”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

My girlfriend and I stayed here for (thankfully only) 1 night on Friday 10th September and without doubt experienced 2 of the rudest, most unwelcoming and bad mannered people we have ever come across.

After driving 7 hours from Calais, arriving at the Chateaux at around 6.30pm, we were greeted by one of the owners incredibly brusquely, which we later found out was because we were a whole 30 minutes later than our estimated arrival time.

We had been offered to undertake the wine tasting at any time until 7.30pm, and so assumed our arrival wouldn't have presented any problems in terms of undertaking this. However, upon arrival we were immediately passed on to the (very pleasant and friendly, yes non-knowledgeable about the local area) 2 Chinese female interns, to be taken to our room. Hence it was made plain to us that the wine tasting would be unavailable.

We sat down for dinner at around 7.45pm, and were shown the menu. Prior to my arrival I had emailed the owners 3 times to ensure that a vegetarian dish would be available on the menu as my girlfriend is vegetarian, who had confirmed that that would be the case and was no problem at al. There were only meat dishes on the menu. I asked the owners if they would be able to prepare anything for my girlfriend, and they initially offered up a mixed salad. I then spoke to the owners about this, asking if they could make anything hot as we had travelled all day, and I didn't want to be sat opposite my girlfriend with her eating a cold salad and me eating something hot and rather more inspirational. The owners, immediately and without further discussion, told me that Friday evenings involved a limited menu and that I should have enquired about vegetarian dishes. I said that I had and had emails from them to that effect. They then accused me, bluntly and matter of factly, of lying. Naturally I was shocked by this. They then made me wait for 10 minutes in reception (with my girlfriend still sat at the table - alone among a room-full of other customers) whilst they trawled through the emails. When they found my emails, they then admitted that it was their fault, and that they would be prepared to make a quiche for my girlfriend, but that was the only option and we'd have to wait 35 minutes for it. I agreed to this, as we were both incredibly hungry at that point.

The food itself, when we received it, was well cooked and tasty. The wine that we had with it was also delicious.

When the morning arrived, we went down for breakfast at around 9am, and I tried to say good morning to each of the owners. Incredibly, they both completely ignored me, and made a point of doing so in front of other guests.

We had breakfast on the appealing terrace overlooking the Mount St Jean valleys for around half an hour, which was most pleasant. Again, the demeanour and attitude of the female interns was most pleasant.

I then proceeded to check-out, at which point I received a rude shock. Firstly, the owners were trying to charge us full price for the wine tasting which they had refused to provide to us the previous day. Secondly, I was half-expecting to see some kind of token gesture (e.g. 5%/10%,etc) discount offered to us for the lack of vegetarian dishes available the night before, an error which they had admitted was theirs. None was offered at all. Thirdly, when I queried the contents of the bill, I was immediately told by the owners that they considered me to be rude for asking them the night before to offer up a vegetarian dish and that "they wouldn't take me back in the future even if I asked them to". This was unprompted and unjustified. Obviously I wouldn't dream of returning to such a rude establishment, but the manner of this whole check-out experience left me totally bewildered. I have never experienced anything similar before in my life, having travelled extensively not only around the Burgundy region, staying in several other Chateaus there, and also around the whole of Southern Europe in general.

Naturally every traveller has their own individual experiences, and mine was at the extreme end of the scale. However, what I can be sure of is that as this happened to us, it could easily happen to somebody else. We are not particularly demanding guests.

In a nutshell, the owners of this beautiful chateaux have the potential for spoiling the whole experience with their rudeness, arrogance and contempt for their guests. I would strongly advise potential future customers to consider alternatives before staying here.

Jonathan

We wish there was something called “Guest Advisor” to warn other B&Bs/Hotels/Restaurants of potential aggressive, rude and threatening guest! These guests would definitely be included…

It all went pear-shaped when the guests did not like the vegetarian options provided – he became very rude and aggressive and demanded another vegetarian option… To put it into perspective, we are a small B&B and cook dinners a few nights of the week for our guests and, unfortunately, unable to keep a fully stocked kitchen in order to cater to everyone’s tastes and wishes at any given day.

Honestly, we never felt so uncomfortable in our own house before with such threatening guests!
