“Camp Dreary”

That is what my daughter called this "resort". They have some nice rooms, but the "garden" is gross, full of stagnant, dirty pools of water and pipes sticking up every which way. We had a nice verandah but it looked out over a corrugated iron shack of some kind. The pool was clean but with an Eastern European school vibe, and gave out stained towels.

The beach, once you pass the jumble of unloved chairs still on the hotel side of the fence, and once you pass the bits of garbage on the beach side of the fence, is GORGEOUS, but it's not enough. There is a sign explaining that there are no chairs allowed on the beach because they have a "pristine beach" policy. And then you step out on to the beach and clearly no one from the hotel has bothered to pick up garbage recently. We checked out early.

I would rather pay the same or more for fewer "amenities" at a guesthouse down the road.

“Gently Fading Away”

Arrived Chumpon train station, quoted 300Baht for fare to resort by Blue Tuk Tuk taxi, later found out that green taxis only charge 60Bhat for same 15 kilometre journey.
Hotel is in a great location adjacent to the beach. We opted for a garden view bungalow, for our one night stay. The accommodation was very basic, ok for one night only would not be suitable for a longer stay. This 'eco' resort on inspection is in need of some immediate TLC as the garden areas are in a dilapidated state, with many fish ponds, which are excellent breeding grounds for Mosquitos. In one pond there was a dead fish, which had been just left floating on top.the swimming pool is a nice size, but being surrounded by vegetation had lot's of leaves and other accumulated rubbish at the bottom of the pool. Overall the 'resort' needs a good shake up or further investment to bring it up to scratch.

Room Tip: Do not rely on the photographs as shown either for the accommodation or the area.

“Ecological hotel - yeah right ..”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

The hotel claims to be very ecological , and if you look at the amount of life in the rooms - they`re right !
Mildew / mould on the walls , gekko on the ceiling ( hanging upside down ) and and an assortment of cockroaches on the floor .
Outside of the buildings there are waterchannels crisscrossing the compound as a part of a waterpurification plant . This is clearly not working - the channels are full of standing water acting as a gigantic nursery for mosquitos and other flying bugs .
We had ordered an extra bed on our room to our child , but no extra bed was to be seen
during our stay - until checkout ... then it magically appeared on the bill .

The swimmingpool was closed for repairs , or was it closed so the repairman could have his swim alone ?
The beaches close by could have been beautiful , but were filled with whatever had come floating by . In places you had to zig-zag across old tires and plastic bags to reach the sea .
The staff on the site did not understand english , or the concept of service , but the idea of paying twice for a bottle of water was completely ok by them .
Getting transport at a reasonable price turned out to be a bit of a problem .
Was solved by calling to a friend who organised transport at a fraction of the price given to us at the hotel .
My advice to everyone considering to stay here - don`t !

Room Tip: Find another hotel , you will thank yourself you did !

“It is ecological in the sense that nothing works - and you are paying for it.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

By far the worst place I've stayed ever (I once spent a night on a park bench in old Yugoslavia, and that was slightly worse). We arrive, - they can't seem to manage that we are 12 people, because they constantly ask me; twelve, really! But ok, they send us off to our rooms...The bell boys are then waiting at the other end to grab our luggage for the last 2-3 meters and expect a tip -
Yeah, right, after we carry it through the dark and the uneven paths, then we are to be grateful for some guy rolling it on an even floor for 2 seconds?
So we try to settle in, but one of the rooms had an amount of mildew that actually set off the asthma of us. When I went to the reception to change it, after I had explained the "small" problem, I was asked if I really wanted to change room. Still, I held my tounge and was rather civil about it.
Then I asked for transportation to the Lomprayah pier for the boat we were taking the next day. (I had sent them an e-mail asking about this before, but got the reply that this should be settled when we arrived - I soon learned why) -
"Transportation? No problem! 300 baht per person." - I know this may sound cheap, but I was somewhat taken aback, and asked again; "300 baht per person?" And yes, I got it right the first time. And that is probably an Ok, if a bit stiff price for a taxi ride of 40 minutes if you are 1 person...We were 12. We had just arrived by fancy limo ride from Cha-am (5 hours) which cost us less... Imagine me not being happy about the suggested price. But, no, no, fixed price, but he promised to call and try to fix other price. We gave more or less up the whole place, went out for dinner (which actually turned out to be fantastic - great place that had absolutely nothing to do with Chumphon Cabana. So I will not mention their name in a negative review).
After dinner, no can fix cheaper price. I am getting less surprised by the minute.
After my family has gone to bed, I feel I can actually work myself up to some degree of anger, so I go back to the reception and asks them to order 6 taxies from Chumphon central city. All of a sudden they had fixed it! I would get TukTuk. Only 1500 baht.
(And this reduction/possibilty suddenly leapt into his mind when I asked for taxies from other places? Wow, imagine that)
So, thw next morning we are finally leaving. But we have time to go for a swim in the sea. (since the swimming pool was closed for renovation, my room had a balcony towards the pool, the only renovation guy I saw was swimming in the pool.)
So, we go to the ecological beach, without sunbeds, umbrellas etc. Yeah, right!
Someone needs to tell them that ecological doesn't mean you do not touch anything!
It is a lovely beach - or rather could be if someone actually picked up and moved away all the shait floating in on the beach.
I will not comment on the ride to the pier - not his fault that his TukTuk suddenly were supposed to take 12 people.
The last straw, when I finally got angry, was when the people at this hotel had the nerve to nag us about the minibar - not just once, but thrice. The last time I told the receptionist; "ok, now I have paid you twice, how much money you want? I just want to go now?" And all is well? Oh, no, because they called the Tuktuk about a water bottle and a coke we only had paid for once.

I think what sums up our experience the best is that we forfeit 500 us dollars just not to go back. we ordered a different hotel on the tour back again - and the 500 dollars Cabana kept because "they think we should have been there" is some of the best spent money I have ever done!

“5 Stars, But....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

I stayed at Chumphon Cabanas for work, so I had no idea about the ecological aspects of the resort until I got there. Unfortunately most of the eco literature is in Thai only so you have to guess by the pictures or ask the staff.
I am giving this resort 5 Stars for its potential. It is situated on a great stretch of beach. The grounds could be amazing. This could be the model for eco-freindly resorts, the problem I see is that it needs a desperate update through-out the property. I hope they can raise the funding to update this place.
That being said, people are very friendly, and though I was working it was super relaxing.
