“Not up to it's stars”

I stayed at the hotel over New years 2011/12 for 7 days.
The hotel boosts 5 stars on its homepage and is sold by it's related travel agencies as a "first class hotel, which was why I and my family chose the venue as recommended by the travel agency (Jambo Tous in Stockholm, Sweden). The reality is far from this however. The hotel is ragged and worn. Equipment in gym and for water sports broken and unusable. The servie is sporadic and quality of services uneven. Unskilled staff try their best but lacks training and finess. The supposed three restaurant is in reality only one. The "second" is the breakfast buffet and the third is nowhere to be seen. Sunchair on the beach largely broke or worn to a level of discomfort. Bars serve only wine and beer and can only produce three or four out of the 30 something drink on the meny. AC:s non functional. Birds invading the dinner and lunch buffets. The pool is old and worn and falling apart. If you choose to go there and find the pricing attractiv - Its in reality a two star hotel

“Fantastic bar”

We stayed five nights in this hotel and enjoyed a relaxing time. The hotel itself and the rooms are dated(especially the bathrooms). On the plus side the shower was always hot and powerful, the bed is large and comfortable and the staff decorate it every day with flowers. The cocktails and special coffees at the pool bar were amazing. Most of the buffet food was good and always fresh and in the evening was served by the pool with some entertainment.
The hotel is located on a glorious white sand beach but the sea is normally too shallow to swim in. Free entertainment and trips at the hotel are good but it is a good idea to bring your own snoorkelling equipment. The manageress is charming and very attentive. The other downside of the hotel was the number of stairs (66 to breakfast).
Also there is no late night entertainment.

Room Tip: Choose a garden room near the pool or beach then you only need to use the stairs to get to breakfast...

On arrival we were met by courtious and welcoming staff but my eyes were averted by the amazing view of the magnificent white sands, sea and reef. Although we were an early arrival our accomodation was efficiently sorted out and we were whisked away to a purely luxurious, clean, air conditioned bedroom with a spacious bathroom and balcony. The hotel was well equipped to suit everyones needs, from those who wanted to sit in quiet comfort to those who wanted to be involved with the entertainment of the day to those who just wanted to lie on the beds on the edge of the beach within the paramiters of the hotel, gazing at the interchangeable colours of the sea.
Breakfast time was most enjoyable with a selection to suit all. The themed evening meals offered a vast variety of both hot and cold food....most delicious!
I was most impressed with the interaction of the management who mingled well with everyone and made us feel so welcome. ALL of the staff were friendly, happy, polite and helpful. The tourist centre organised external trips efficiently. To conclude, the only gripe I have is that I couldn't stay longer..... I certainly will be back. Thank you for a memorable stay. Asante sana!

Room Tip: Higher rooms are terraced, are quiet and are near to reception, breakfast restaurant and upstairs ba...

We arrived at Ocean Paradise after two nights in Stonetown, and a lovely coastal air (12 seater flight) over from Dar. We arrived on new year's eve and were looking forward to 6 relaxing days. Management were regularly around, and chatted with the guests to see if all was ok, any problems etc. We found this quite unusual but good, as generally management are never seen unless there is an issue. We reported a fault with our aircon on new years eve, and were amazed to find it was fixed within the hour. The entertainment staff were also helpful, but not in your face, and all the restaurant and bar staff were exceptionally friendly and there when you needed them. The food was fine, breakfast was the standard buffet with a large choice of fruits as well as the cooked stuff, dinner was a different theme each night - indian, swahili, ocean, international etc, and most nights they also had an additional dish for those who either didnt like the theme food, or for the kids. The pool was huge, and kept clean, the swim up pool bar was an added benefit! We did have an issue in that it would appear that the majority of guests sneaked down early to the pool and booked the loungers, leaving us poor souls who didnt want to be up at the crack of dawn hunting for loungers when we did surface. On saying that, the chap in charge of the pool towels always managed to find us something.
Would I go back, yes, most definitely. Would I try and find a different route? Any route that would avoid Dar airport can only be a benefit, its the pits from both an efficiency and amenity perspective. However, coming from Jhb it may be a bit difficult to find an alternative route there.
We booked as part of a package, so not sure the actual room rate, but it was over the xmas period so we expected to pay a premium. Room wise, the rooms were clean, and fresh, although the ones up at the back were a bit of a walk, although they were probably quieter as nobody was really walking past. I liked the rondavel style and thought they were well fitted out. The mosqito nets were sprayed each night, and we didnt have any problems on that score.

“Looking for a break after Kilimanjaro”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

I stayed at this hotel after climbing Kilimanjaro and doing a 4 day safari camping 2 nights out of 3. So, the place was heaven.
I emailed the hotel before I got there to ask for prices but was not able to book from Moshi because of bad internet connection.
When we got to the hotel, my boyfriend stayed with the cabbie in case the price was different when we arrived. Our backup was the Hilton.
Well, when I told them the price, the front desk thought it was a mistake - $117, per person half board, and went to get the manager. She asked who gave me that price. I gave the name, which I had with me, and told her that, if it was a problem, we would go to the Hilton.
Of course, we got the room. It was gorgeous. At the back of the property, but we didn't mind walking through the beautiful hotel to get to the grounds. The pool was very nice and there weren't too many people there. Breakfast and dinner buffets were large and delicious.
The beach is not good at all and, as soon as you step onto it, someone is there trying to sell you something.
We took an excursion to Prison Island and to swim with dolphins (don't bother) but our guide was great and we keep in touch by email.
The power went out one night during dinner and during the night for hours - really sucked not having a/c in the room and I was devoured by mosquitoes. They say they spray the bed netting, and so did I just in case but, the mosquitoes are relentless.
The lady who runs the awesomely priced gift shop was wonderful. I wanted to buy a basket. Turns out, she only uses them for shoppers to carry their purchases. I think she thought I was crazy so she just let me have it no charge. I almost started crying - the one act of kindness I received on this island.
In the end, it was nice to rest my body at such a nice place. It was quiet and the food delicious. But don't expect the Mayan Riviera even though the hotel pics kind of make it look like it's that kind of place.
