“Dirty, nasty place full of roaches”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

I was quite excited to transfer to Amaan Bungalows because the brochure showed the bungalows on the water. Unfortunately this is NOT the case - it's just clever photogrpahy. So right off the bat my girlfriend felt robbed. But that was just the start of a horrid experience.

Ok so there was no electricity. They had a generator that ran for about 6 hours a day. So it was HOT! Sleeping was a problem - but Im getting ahead of myself.

On arrival we were made to wait. 1 hour - in a room with bags. The room we booked was on the water edge (but not on the water) but I was happy. Then the tide started to come in. Suddenly our room was covered in roaches. I thought I had it under control, took a shoe and killed about 30 but soon realised I was fighting a loosing battle. I ran. Gives me shivers thinking about it. Management told me they would come with Doom. This was not gonna cut it - I demanded another room or I would leave and find another hotel. They promptly moved me to a much nicer room which was much newer as well. This made me happy and there were no signs of roaches. So be warned - do not take the sea side room.

Eating was a disaster. The food had flies on it and without electricity, was pretty revolting. I ate breakfast their once and felt sick. It was REALLY bad and Im used to boarding school food. So despite it been free we never ate there again.

I got a cocktail (don't know wtf I was thinking) Margarita - I got a glass with some green liquid in it - still don't know what it was - I drank it, and I think it was lemon juice, but it was horrible (and $20). I went round the back of the restaurant where the kitchen was and I got the fright of my life. The entire wall was covered with roaches. I took a picture - but I can't find it :( Literally 100 roaches all sitting on the wall just chilling. Waiting for restaurant to close I guess - and yes the restaurant is next to the sea view chalet - so I guess that explains the roaches in our room. *shivers*

Thank god for the ZED HOTEL which was next door cause we ate there - and they had no electricity too but at least everything was fresh and the cocktails were superb. And they had ICE - this was more precious than gold. :)

Despite that - as long as you don't take the sea view room (next to the kitchen) and you do not eat at the hotel restaurant - It is beautiful. It is right on the edge of the beach and the beach is like a picture. You see it in brochures - well this is the place they take them. No photoshop needed - once you step into the ocean - you are in the most beautiful place in the world. Just try to ignore the African male prostitutes walking around (Italian ladies love some local culture apparently) and try ignore the locals peeing on the beach.

My suggestion is stay at the ZED Hotel instead - I am gonna do that next time.

Room Tip: Stay away from the sea facing room next to the Kitchen

“Good value”

The standard rooms are nice and large with good bathrooms/showers and a couple of chairs outside on a shared balcony. Definately the best cheapie in the area. Breakfast was also really good, a buffet with different things each day. We stayed both in seaview and gardenview bungalows, and the view is great from the seaview ones, but water pressure is bad and the shower was much better in the cheaper garden view ones. If you do want a seaview room, try to get one of the rooms starting with P, as they have private balconies and looked a lot nicer than the ones we got.

Room Tip: Get the rooms starting with P if you want seaview with private balcony

“Just fine!”

We loved Amaan Bungalows. I sourced out 5-6 others, in person, and settled on their property for a variety of reasons such as: proximity to water(very important to us); cleanliness; price ($120 US for waterfront); casual atmosphere; access to restaurants and bars not to mention air con and private hot water tank in each bathroom. That being said, that was primarily based on the fact they had ocean side suites so I am only speaking for the waterfront rooms and not anything else. The 'garden' suitres looked nice and are close to the water and come in cheaper per night.
We arrived with cash and had no issues with ATM's because we didn't need them. Honestly though, I'm just happy that Nungwi in general had hot water, beer/wine and fresh food. For the abject poverty and lack of even simple resources one sees throughout Tanzania, I am surprised that people complain so much about the lack of debit machines and/or non-fee credit card payments for accomodations in Zanzibar. 99% of the population in that country walks for water so planning ahead for cash doesn't seem so strange a request for me anyways. So, get cash in Stone Town or Dar. For fee internet was available at the hotel; on the one day it was slow, they refunded money. Close to other hotels and restaurants/cafe's without it feeling touristy at all. If you need a pool and pampering go elsewhere. If you need budget, check their garden rates.

Room Tip: Ocean room; book in advance

“A nice place to stay and sleep - nice a quiet over night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

We moved to Amaan Beach Bungalows after one terrible day at Nungwi Inn. Amaan Bungalows have nice large rooms with good bathrooms. The air-conditioners are the old style and therefore a bit noisy but they work well just the same. They provide additional towels to take to the beach which is excellent and change all towels each day. They have two very nice restaurants if you do not want to venture out and are reasonably priced and compare well with most other restaurants near by.

Three levels of rooms at differing prices. We stayed in a garden view with air-conditioning which is the middle level and all said after the other place well worth it.

“The worst accomodation that I stayed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

I stayed here just last week, and I highly recommend not to stay at this hotel because of reasons below.

1. They only accept cash.
They don't have ATM, so when you are short of cash, then you have to swipe your card with 20 % fee.
2. Stink from a room
For the first time to enter the room, I suffered from an odor of the room. I can't explain how bad it is, but it caused me a headache.
3. Unfriendly staff
In a buffet restaurant for breakfast, a staff required us to reuse the plate. There is only an instant coffee and tea, and flies stick to food everywhere.
