I was quite excited to transfer to Amaan Bungalows because the brochure showed the bungalows on the water. Unfortunately this is NOT the case - it's just clever photogrpahy. So right off the bat my girlfriend felt robbed. But that was just the start of a horrid experience.
Ok so there was no electricity. They had a generator that ran for about 6 hours a day. So it was HOT! Sleeping was a problem - but Im getting ahead of myself.
On arrival we were made to wait. 1 hour - in a room with bags. The room we booked was on the water edge (but not on the water) but I was happy. Then the tide started to come in. Suddenly our room was covered in roaches. I thought I had it under control, took a shoe and killed about 30 but soon realised I was fighting a loosing battle. I ran. Gives me shivers thinking about it. Management told me they would come with Doom. This was not gonna cut it - I demanded another room or I would leave and find another hotel. They promptly moved me to a much nicer room which was much newer as well. This made me happy and there were no signs of roaches. So be warned - do not take the sea side room.
Eating was a disaster. The food had flies on it and without electricity, was pretty revolting. I ate breakfast their once and felt sick. It was REALLY bad and Im used to boarding school food. So despite it been free we never ate there again.
I got a cocktail (don't know wtf I was thinking) Margarita - I got a glass with some green liquid in it - still don't know what it was - I drank it, and I think it was lemon juice, but it was horrible (and $20). I went round the back of the restaurant where the kitchen was and I got the fright of my life. The entire wall was covered with roaches. I took a picture - but I can't find it :( Literally 100 roaches all sitting on the wall just chilling. Waiting for restaurant to close I guess - and yes the restaurant is next to the sea view chalet - so I guess that explains the roaches in our room. *shivers*
Thank god for the ZED HOTEL which was next door cause we ate there - and they had no electricity too but at least everything was fresh and the cocktails were superb. And they had ICE - this was more precious than gold. :)
Despite that - as long as you don't take the sea view room (next to the kitchen) and you do not eat at the hotel restaurant - It is beautiful. It is right on the edge of the beach and the beach is like a picture. You see it in brochures - well this is the place they take them. No photoshop needed - once you step into the ocean - you are in the most beautiful place in the world. Just try to ignore the African male prostitutes walking around (Italian ladies love some local culture apparently) and try ignore the locals peeing on the beach.
My suggestion is stay at the ZED Hotel instead - I am gonna do that next time.
