“Just fine!”

We loved Amaan Bungalows. I sourced out 5-6 others, in person, and settled on their property for a variety of reasons such as: proximity to water(very important to us); cleanliness; price ($120 US for waterfront); casual atmosphere; access to restaurants and bars not to mention air con and private hot water tank in each bathroom. That being said, that was primarily based on the fact they had ocean side suites so I am only speaking for the waterfront rooms and not anything else. The 'garden' suitres looked nice and are close to the water and come in cheaper per night.
We arrived with cash and had no issues with ATM's because we didn't need them. Honestly though, I'm just happy that Nungwi in general had hot water, beer/wine and fresh food. For the abject poverty and lack of even simple resources one sees throughout Tanzania, I am surprised that people complain so much about the lack of debit machines and/or non-fee credit card payments for accomodations in Zanzibar. 99% of the population in that country walks for water so planning ahead for cash doesn't seem so strange a request for me anyways. So, get cash in Stone Town or Dar. For fee internet was available at the hotel; on the one day it was slow, they refunded money. Close to other hotels and restaurants/cafe's without it feeling touristy at all. If you need a pool and pampering go elsewhere. If you need budget, check their garden rates.

Room Tip: Ocean room; book in advance

“A nice place to stay and sleep - nice a quiet over night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

We moved to Amaan Beach Bungalows after one terrible day at Nungwi Inn. Amaan Bungalows have nice large rooms with good bathrooms. The air-conditioners are the old style and therefore a bit noisy but they work well just the same. They provide additional towels to take to the beach which is excellent and change all towels each day. They have two very nice restaurants if you do not want to venture out and are reasonably priced and compare well with most other restaurants near by.

Three levels of rooms at differing prices. We stayed in a garden view with air-conditioning which is the middle level and all said after the other place well worth it.

“The worst accomodation that I stayed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

I stayed here just last week, and I highly recommend not to stay at this hotel because of reasons below.

1. They only accept cash.
They don't have ATM, so when you are short of cash, then you have to swipe your card with 20 % fee.
2. Stink from a room
For the first time to enter the room, I suffered from an odor of the room. I can't explain how bad it is, but it caused me a headache.
3. Unfriendly staff
In a buffet restaurant for breakfast, a staff required us to reuse the plate. There is only an instant coffee and tea, and flies stick to food everywhere.

“Be Sure to Get it In Writing!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2011

We paid for a 'Sea View' room w/ private balcony, however, we got a 'Tree View' with shared balcony.

1) Room - We visited their website and believed we would be getting a room with a nice wooden deck set on stilts out over the water where my partner could get sun. They first put us in a room facing a concrete wall where we could not see the ocean at all, after arguing with them, calling our and their booking agents, we were finally received a room with a concrete shared balcony and a big tree in front of it (picture attached)

2) Dishonest Behavior - They say they do not take credit cards. In reality, they do, like all hotels in Nungwi (there is no ATM or bank in the city), but they have moved the Credit Card Terminal from the front desk, to the building next door (still in the hotel). They send you there, where they charge you a 10% fee to pull cash (shillings) off your Credit Card, then adding insult to injury: check out is in dollars, at their rate!

Because of the things above, we spent very little time or money in the hotel. I just did not feel welcome, I felt taken advantage of at every turn. That said, we did not interface with the hotel staff or services one time after the first day except to get toilet paper and had a great time in Nungwi, and no other issues with the hotel.

If I were to again stay at Amaan, I would get everything in writing from the manager before arriving. This is what I was doing by the end of the stay, even when we left our bags at reception, I had him sign a sheet agreeing how many bags we left and what valuables were there.

“Great location, but an update needed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2011

I stayed here on my 5th trip to Zanzibar - its a couple of doors down from the place I used to stay (I decided to step up a level from the low-budget place I used to go). I knew the location was great, and chose to stay in a Sea View room. These look out onto the sea, and at high tide, the water is literally underneath your deck. The room itself was quite basic, with bed, shelves and a desk.
Television was provided, but the remote only worked for the DSTV, you had to get up onto a chair to turn the television on/off!!!
Air conditioner and fan were both provided, but one night the power went off, and there was no back up generator to run the A/C - made for a very hot night!
The ensuite bathroom is in desperate need of an update - it is really on the same level as the $30 a night place I used to stay in Nungwi! The bed throw/cushions/curtains are also in need of an update - they are truly hideous... think 1960s throwbacks.
The biggest issue I had was that there were huge holes in my mosquito net (I'm talking over 20cm holes!) I ended up with a huge amount of mossi bites - not flash when you're trying to avoid malaria! In a place that is charging $150 per room per night as its standard rate, these issues are just a joke.
I didn't have a whole lot of choice of places to stay at Nungwi as it was the long rains - and the other drawback is that there were almost no restaurants open - something I'll definitely keep in mind for next time! It was nice to get away from life for a while and not have hundreds of tourists around, but that comes at a price! I will be checking out tripadvisor for a new place to stay next time I'm in Nungwi.
