We loved Amaan Bungalows. I sourced out 5-6 others, in person, and settled on their property for a variety of reasons such as: proximity to water(very important to us); cleanliness; price ($120 US for waterfront); casual atmosphere; access to restaurants and bars not to mention air con and private hot water tank in each bathroom. That being said, that was primarily based on the fact they had ocean side suites so I am only speaking for the waterfront rooms and not anything else. The 'garden' suitres looked nice and are close to the water and come in cheaper per night.
We arrived with cash and had no issues with ATM's because we didn't need them. Honestly though, I'm just happy that Nungwi in general had hot water, beer/wine and fresh food. For the abject poverty and lack of even simple resources one sees throughout Tanzania, I am surprised that people complain so much about the lack of debit machines and/or non-fee credit card payments for accomodations in Zanzibar. 99% of the population in that country walks for water so planning ahead for cash doesn't seem so strange a request for me anyways. So, get cash in Stone Town or Dar. For fee internet was available at the hotel; on the one day it was slow, they refunded money. Close to other hotels and restaurants/cafe's without it feeling touristy at all. If you need a pool and pampering go elsewhere. If you need budget, check their garden rates.
