Riverrun is a lovely lodge set on a hillside down a quiet gravel road. It is outside of town, and that is a very good thing as Wanaka can get a bit crazy (we were there over the New Year). The lodge is beautiful with lots of hand-crafted furniture made from vintage wood. There are sitting areas, the dining room, a large inviting fireplace, and views out to the hillside lawn and beautiful mountains beyond. Rooms are located in the lodge along a common hallway; we were in a smaller Cardrona Room. However, it was quite homey and had a terrific view. The room had double doors out to a shared patio, and the bathroom also had a window looking out onto the patio. This was fine as all the guests seemed to respect each other's privacy and did not wander into another guest's territory. The patio looked out over the lawn and a family of quails out to those gorgeous mountains. A room down the common hallway contained coffee-tea making and a refrigerator for the shared use of the guests. WiFi access.
Meg Taylor was a very helpful and welcoming host. She offered advice, tips, and a helping hand in any way possible. Since Wanaka was a zoo on New Year's Eve (closed streets, crazy drunk teenagers, etc), Meg offered to drive us into town for our dinner reservations and then returned to get us back to the lodge. The next day, she made touring suggestions and advice, loaned us walking sticks, and loaded us up with snacks and water for our hike. There are also bikes for your use and trails to explore across the property. There is a deep cedar hot tub tucked down the hill from the lodge that was absolutely perfect after a day of hiking. The views were amazing and the cool breeze coming up the slope refreshing.
Breakfast was to order and was excellent. We had anticipated that dinner would not be offered on New Year''s Eve and Day, and so we did not organize our stay to take advantage of this opportunity.
This is a lovely property out in the countryside -- you really feel a world apart from Wanaka although you are only about 5-10 minutes car ride away. Meg is a wonderful host and you truly feel welcomed into her home.
