“Like home on the range”

Riverrun is a lovely lodge set on a hillside down a quiet gravel road. It is outside of town, and that is a very good thing as Wanaka can get a bit crazy (we were there over the New Year). The lodge is beautiful with lots of hand-crafted furniture made from vintage wood. There are sitting areas, the dining room, a large inviting fireplace, and views out to the hillside lawn and beautiful mountains beyond. Rooms are located in the lodge along a common hallway; we were in a smaller Cardrona Room. However, it was quite homey and had a terrific view. The room had double doors out to a shared patio, and the bathroom also had a window looking out onto the patio. This was fine as all the guests seemed to respect each other's privacy and did not wander into another guest's territory. The patio looked out over the lawn and a family of quails out to those gorgeous mountains. A room down the common hallway contained coffee-tea making and a refrigerator for the shared use of the guests. WiFi access.

Meg Taylor was a very helpful and welcoming host. She offered advice, tips, and a helping hand in any way possible. Since Wanaka was a zoo on New Year's Eve (closed streets, crazy drunk teenagers, etc), Meg offered to drive us into town for our dinner reservations and then returned to get us back to the lodge. The next day, she made touring suggestions and advice, loaned us walking sticks, and loaded us up with snacks and water for our hike. There are also bikes for your use and trails to explore across the property. There is a deep cedar hot tub tucked down the hill from the lodge that was absolutely perfect after a day of hiking. The views were amazing and the cool breeze coming up the slope refreshing.

Breakfast was to order and was excellent. We had anticipated that dinner would not be offered on New Year''s Eve and Day, and so we did not organize our stay to take advantage of this opportunity.

This is a lovely property out in the countryside -- you really feel a world apart from Wanaka although you are only about 5-10 minutes car ride away. Meg is a wonderful host and you truly feel welcomed into her home.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the smaller Cardrona rooms, but the view and the setting are great.

“Serenity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011 via mobile

We have experienced some of the finest accommodations in New Zealand, and Riverrun is the one we would come back to first. Wanaka is, of course, hard to beat, but Riverun is also a beautiful place unto itself, and Meg Taylor is a wonderful hostess. The feeling you have at Riverrun is that you have just been invited into someone's gracious home. We'll be back!

“Unsurpassed Hospitality and Gorgeous Views”

I'm in the travel industry, and I rarely write reviews as a result, but I feel compelled to comment on what a wonderful stay we had at Riverrun Lodge in Wanaka. The property is at the end of a gravel road, on a hillside adjacent to a working sheep farm, in one of the most gorgeous and pristine locations in a country that is filled with them - the view from our room was breathtaking. Riverrun itself is a wonderful combination of homey comfort and understated luxury. Meg, our host, hits every detail with the right note, from the appointments in the bathroom and the terrific volumes of short stories in our room, to the fantastic cedar hot tub on a small promontory at the edge of the property. We stayed in for dinner, and it was easily one of the best meals we've had in New Zealand. Breakfast the following morning was also top notch (I don't think I've ever raved about toast before, but even that was a "best ever"). Riverrun is simply how it should be done - a truly comfortable place to stay with understated elegance, where the guest is the priority. I hope we are fortunate enough to return someday.

“Magnificent luxury lodge that is truly fantastic value with a touch of class in service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2011 via mobile

Meg runs an incredible lodge that is luxurious with open log fires, an beautiful outdoor cedar hot tub and the views of the snow capped mountain range is to die for.
The evening drinks and nibbles were unexpected and welcomed and her personal service is so down to earth and friendly that we felt like we had known her for years! Thanks Meg for a beautiful and relaxing 3 days and I hope you get to do more traveling to Tanzania, Croatia and China! We will be back soon!
