We've just come back from a week during the recent monsoon and flooding. Despite the weather we enjoyed the resort. The buildings and gardens are beautiful. The kids loved the bats, geckos hiding in the lights and the toads. We stayed in the Coral Wing so walked a long way for all our meals. Not a bad idea with the amount you're eating.
Althought we booked the "kids eat free" package, we found the Lagoon Restaurant unbearable and gave it a miss after 2 tries. It was noisy, unclean and the staff were scowly and clearly over it. It's better to fill up at breakfast (Takali was awesome), get a bowl of chips for lunch and hang on till dinner. Drinks are expensive but we packed plenty of duty free and the local beers aren't too bad at $8.50. You need to book the restaurants at least 24 hours in advance. We didn't bother and ended up having room service a couple of times. The Kakoda is very reasonable and lovely - the kids liked the pizza. At $27 it was way cheaper to enjoy the Kakoda (raw fish) than to pay $80 per head for the Lagoon restaurant.
We walked down the causeway, off the resort (10 mins) and found a helpful taxi driver. With his cell number in hand we enjoyed some fabulous meals off resort at Tombos, Geckos, and took a trip down the coral coast, stopping at some cheaper souvenir shops. Well worth the effort. Taxis booked through the resort are much more expensive.
Make use of the free stuff, like the kayaks - take your own goggles and snorkel. The lagoon is brilliant and safe for kids to have a go. Mostly I just enjoyed the warmth and the views which are magical.
Have to agree with the other reviews about some appalling Aussies. Out of control kids and arrogant parents who clearly thought their angels were entitled.
