We booked our vacation to Fiji through our timeshare in August. The location was great it was close enough to everything we wanted to do. They did have a computer lounge where you could buy minutes for internet use. I wish would would have bought the weekly deal they offer at the front desk instead of minutes. The rooms were clean and the kitchen was perfect for our needs. Our room was located on the first floor ocean view, right next to the ice cream stand. It was a little noisy but not to the point where it bothered us. I loved how the electrical outlets could be switched on or off if you weren't using an appliance. There was an electric water kettle and everything you could possibly need stocked in the kitchen. The living room area wasn't the most comfortable the furniture was more like patio furniture instead of living room furniture.
If I could have given 3 1/2 rating I would have, there was a cockroach in our refrigerator. Bugs are pretty common for warm weather resorts I'm sure. It was alive though and when we tried to catch it, we weren't successful the first time and it hid somewhere. The hotel staff was very understanding and gave us a free additional room cleaning and I think they might have sprayed too.
Location: We took a taxi into town a few times and went to the fresh farmers style market for produce, and we had the taxi driver bring us to a local grocery store where we picked up bottled water and a few other things. The resort's connivence store is priced highly and we only used it occasionally. The hotel is at the end of a strip of great resorts. The Westin has the MOST AMAZING SPA! We actually had a couples massage there. They give you a private bungalow with an outdoor soaking tub and double rock wall shower. The massage itself is outside on a hardwood deck overlooking a mini tropical rainforest. There are a ton of great resorts that are close by that I recommend taking advantage of. The Sofitel is one of them.
MOSQUITOS! I had a very bad experience with these little pests in Fiji. One of the travelers at the resort recommended B12 vitamins a week or two before your trip. She didn't have a single bite and didn't use bug spray. If you aren't up for B12, bug spray is a MUST.
Rosie's tours is great for booking day trips, located in the hotel lobby. The Sigatoka River Safari was interesting, a great trip to a local village on a powerful boat. We also enjoyed the island day trips, we went on the First Landing Beach Resort Dinner Cruise that was great. The food was really good and they even had a great wine selection and entertainment. I wished I could have gone up to where they filmed the movie Blue Lagoon but we didn't have enough time. The water is supposed to be intense blue! There is an ATM next to Rosie's tour desk if you need to pull out cash, otherwise we cashed our US Dollars at the port.
I recommend going to the owners socials, we met a ton of great people and it was fun hanging out with them on day trips to the islands. We went to dinner with people from all over the world as a result of the day trips too.
Drinks at the restaurant/ pool bar are pretty good, the food wasn't that great. I suggest bringing anything you can from home if you plan on staying at the hotel most of the time. I tried to make pasta sauce one night and I bought a can of tomatoes from the hotel store and it was basically ketchup in a can. There is a butcher in Nadi (South Pacific Butchering Company) if your looking to grill chicken, or ribs they had a great selection of fresh meat for fantastic prices. It's a pretty small store with really fresh meat, eggs, and pre-marinated grill items.
Port Denarau: There are a few souvenir shops a the port with reasonable prices. There is also a women that comes to the resort and sells handmade jewelry, I think she only comes on certain days I would find out from the hotel's reception desk. DON'T BUY SOUVENIRS AT THE AIRPORT. I wanted to buy a pearl necklace at the port and didn't have time to go back and get it before we left, the prices at the airport were triple the prices at
Great find, magnum ice cream bars! I had never tried one of these fantastic belgium chocolate ice cream bars until I went to Fiji! They were outstanding. They sell them everywhere there and now they even carry them in the US as of a couple months ago.
I could go on and on, I'm stopping myself now! Go to Fiji the US dollar has a great value, and there are plenty of things to see and do. I think we spend $1500 on food, day trips and misc. during our 10 night stay. The food wasn't the greatest from a foodie perspective but the natives are so nice they truly enjoy the tourist that visit. Most travelers come from Australia, New Zealand, and the US.
Room Tip: We had a one bedroom ocean view. It would have comfortably slept 4 people.
