Our holiday started 13th Jan 2012 and we were there for 12 days until 25th Jan 2012 just BEFORE some of the major renovations were due to start around the pool area...so our stay was Fantastic with no interuptions what so ever (apart ftom the rain on the last 2 days).
The accommodation was first class with LARGE clean rooms all air conditioned with spotlessly clean bathrooms (biggy for me).
The grounds and gardens are meticulously maintained each day as was the pool area. I had to ring housekeeping after 5 days to have the room cleaned and linen changed but that was no big deal and whenever we needed more bathroom supplies (those little soap bars don't last long) I would simply ask one of the housekeepers I ran into on the way to the pool and they would restock the room for me right away.
The restaurant next to the pool at Worldmark is the cheapest amoungst all the other resorts and we found that the best way to pay was to book it to our room, pay the room bill using the credit card and pay off the credit card when we got home, that way we got the BEST exchange rate rather than buying/using Fijian cash. Likewisw if you wanted to eat at any of the other resorts, pay with your credit card.
The prices anywhere around the resorts on Denarau are really expensive and even though they were in Fijian dollars, it was a bit of a shock (F$90.00 for a buffet dinner per person at the Sheraton, F$40.00 for a Burger and Chips at the Hard Rock Cafe,F$9.00 for a bag of Snake Lollies and of course F$12.00 for a bar of chocolate....anywhere in Fiji). Shopping at the local supermarket in Nadi (a F$12.00 taxi fare who will wait for you at no extra charge :) ) was the best option with prices far more realistic and some prices cheaper than back home (F$2-3 for a 2Lt Coke). Eating at some of the restaurants or takeaway places at Port Denarau is the cheapest option unless you want to buy and cook in the rooms (not something I wanted to do on my holiday).Yes there is a McDonalds not far away (F$14.00 for a Big Mac Meal)
Back to the renovations.
Their seemed to be a lot of work about to start around the pool area at Worldmark which meant that the swim-up bar would be closed and another bar was to open NEAR the pool instead. The new restaurant was about to begin construction at the front of the resort and once that was completed then the poolside restaurant was going to close with a new Cafe type restaurant taking its place next to the NEW swim-up pool bar.
I must admit.....once they start building it doesn't seem to take them long to finish....maybe future guests could keep us all updated with this.
MY TOP TIPS
Take all your own Chocolate and Lollies in your check in luggage (declaring them of course)
Take your own breakfast ceral in new boxes/bags (declaring them as well)
Book everything to your credit card for the best exchange rate
Book all your tours at Port Denarau with the operators asking for a better price than the brochures (which most offered without me asking)
Take a taxi to the Inter Continental Resort on the CORAL COAST (45 minutes away) for a day on WHITE sandy beaches with turquoise BLUE water and heaps of fish (F$150-180 return trip)...I arranged this with a local Taxi driver (JAMES) who supplied an ESKY/CHILLY BIN, snorkling equipement and waited for us as we brought lunch at GLORIA JEANS (yes they have one in Fiji) in NADI on the way through....and yes...He waited the WHOLE day for us until we were done at NO EXTRA charge (at his insistance).
Take the Whale Tail or Captain Cook Criuse to your OWN island for the day
Hobbie Cat racing in the afternoon....(go on give it a go, its not that hard and the water temp is 30oC)
Say BULA with a smile and it becomes contagious
Drink Kava until your mouth goes numb
Use more suntan lotion than you first thought you would need
Walk around the beach THROUGH all the other resorts and try out their swimming pools, restaurants, cafes and Duty free (all whilst in your swimmers!!!!)
I hope you find this helpful...we can't wait to go back
