“Not too bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed at the Westin room 2703 for a week in Feb 2012. First impressions of the hotel were good. Check in was quick and easy and I was asked what bed configuration I wanted. As it was raining when we arrived we were driven to our room on a golf buggy and shown in. The rooms were clean and very good. One thing I have to say is that they are VERY dark. The air con was needed constantly, but the desired 18 degrees I dont think was ever achieved. I roasted at night and slept with just the sheet or nothing at all. Why they have so many quilts etc on the beds is beyond me. The beds however were very comfortable.

The resort itself is nice. The amenities are good. The food is VERY expensive. Its much cheaper to go to the port or over to the golf club or shops/cafes nearby. The alcohol is also very expensive in the resorts and they charge you an additional 20% tax on the listed price, so just be aware of that. If you are there on a public holiday it is an additional 10% on top of the 20%. That also goes for the food as well.

I found the staff in the shops to be very annoying. I did not like being followed around everywhere I went in the shop. I also was annoyed by the rude indo fijian staff.

They run a Bula Bus that takes you around the different resorts. The blue one costs you $7.00FJD and takes you to the port and around the resorts and the brown bula bus takes you just to the Sheraton and the villas. Be aware that this service only runs after three in the afternoon. One day we waited over 30 mins for the brown bula bus that reception staff told us would come and after 8 blue ones went past we complained, only to be told that they dont run at that time of the day.

Over all it was a pleasant stay. Just be aware of the costs of food and drinks in the resort. The rooms are good and adequate for our needs. Would I stay here again ? possibly!

Room Tip: Go for the Ocean view ones.

We stayed for 3 nights at The Westin on the last of our 11 day Fiji holiday. We had previously stayed at the Sheraton (absolutly amazing!) and Castaway Island (paradise on earth!) So we were in great spirits ready for the last leg of our trip.
The dissapointments started at check in, when we enquired about changing money currency we were told that we could not do that and were shoved off to the business centre were the lady behind the desk was extremely rude and told us to go back to check in. Finally after much explaining we were told that yes we could convert money. We were then told our room was not ready and that we would be informed of when it would be, we could not room charge any food and were left waiting and hungry. We decided to swim in the pool and not once were we informed of when the room was ready.
It wasnt until 4 hours later that i decided to ask and i got a very rude response of "yeah well it was ready 2 hours ago"
Once we got to our room i then discovered that my fiancee and i were to sleep in 2 seperate single beds! When i called front desk i got this response "when you book a room its request only so you could end up with any bed type, we are at 100% occupancy also so we cant change you" i was furious at this and had a word to the duty manager who sorted out the suitation for us the next day, he was very helpful.
The resturants were ok, nothing great and youll find better eating at the Sheraton. Breakfast was nice, with a nice range of foods. I know everyone is on "Fiji time" but waiting 30 mins just to see a menu was becoming ridiculous.
The beach is not pleasant, murky and no sand to sit on. Rooms were lovely except our air conditioning broke down and was off for nearly a whole day making the room extremely hot.
We also received wake up calls at 530am which we did not request.
Overall we were dissapointed, we loved Fiji however and luckily our first 2 resorts allowed us to have an amazing time.

Room Tip: Ocean Front room with balcony was amazing.

“Nice resort with great central area - pity about the weather.”

We stayed in an unrenovated king suite overlooking the water. The staff were nice - very unhurried though (which took a bit of getting used to!) Must be a Fijian thing.... The bedroom itself was very spacious and very clean - lounge room was a bit of a waste as the air-con made it too cold to use and if the air-con was turned off and condensation within the rooms made floor unbearably slippery and fogged up every surface. The bed was a bit soft for my liking but would suit some people.
The weather was terrible - flooding with two cyclone warnings. Didnt seem to be much organised by the hotel when tours were cancelled due to bad weather and things that were advertised just didnt happen, such as kava tasting or crab racing.
Thought the American breakfast was great - good range and value - and bird netting prevented most cheeky visitors - which apparently are a problem at other resorts at Denarau...there are mice though....
Moo moo steak restaurant which is attached to the resort is highly recommended - although not sure why it is so dark in there!
Pool area nice - just wish it had stopped raining long enough to enjoy it....

Room Tip: Renovations currently being done - old rooms are quite dark so ask for a renovated room near the bea...

“Bad Service, expensive and not worth the money!”

We arrived at 5.30am, having paid for a early check in to be told we would have to wait for our room...wait we did till 1pm! With no apology or explanation, in fact check in staff were so rude to us it was as if we had done something wrong.

We arrived at our room, and were impressed with the size, cleanliness and over all presentation. But, were not once during our stay provided with free drinking water, as described in our booking. Beds were so comfortable.

Pool near gym was disgusting, so dirty and had a stagnant water smell about it. Main pool was murky, probably because of the rain. Pool was good, pool service was no existent. We asked for a menu, took the staff 20 mins to get it to us! We then had to find someone to give our order to and it took 40 mins to be delivered. Don't ask for a cup of ice....it will never arrive, you will need to go to the bar and get it yourself.

Food at the resort is EXPENSIVE! it is cheaper to buy beer than water.

Breakfast, average. The best thing about breakfast was the sparkling wine....we made sure we got out money's worth every morning.

Overall my experience was not great, i was expecting a 5 star service from this resort and walked away thinking it was more like a 2 star!

“A beautiful refuge in Fiji”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I can't say enough good about Starwood or the Westin Denarau in Fiji. They really saved me this past December.
First thing to note, if you are a single blonde female, it might not be the best thing to travel to Fiji by yourself. Take that to heart.
That aside, I ended up de-camping to the Westin, and what a beautiful place it is. The rooms are modern, well-designed and very clean. The staff, particularly the women staff, are delightful and hard-working. And the facilities, particularly the pool and Moo Moo's are fantastic. That restaurant has amazing food. As I sit here across the world, I crave their wahoo and amazing bisque. While the restaurant and pool are amazing, the beach is minimal and not very hospitable. I had tar from the beach on my toe nails until my next pedicure.
For Americans, know that Fiji isn't the Caribbean, it isn't Hawaii, so it's necessary to adjust expectations (I didn't know and was surprised). Its people are very religious, culture is very important to them, and it is important to know that there is no government as we know it, they live in a divided situation, lacking leadership, under a military coup. My advice would be to either snuggle in to the fantastic properties of the Westin and its partners and take day trips to out-islands or backpack it and expect hiccups. The country isn't my favorite place, not sure I would go back. But if I do, I would definitely visit this property for relaxation after the long trip.
