“DIDN'T LAST ONE NIGHT”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2008

I made my reservation based on their site and because it was pretty close to the HIMA Hospital of Fajardo where I was rotating as a Medical Student for a week. That first day my mom came with me and we did check in. The waiter of the restaurant helped us, the owner was dressed dirty and sweaty and not professional. When we got to the second floor where the rooms are located, you could smell "old" in the air. Everything was in wood and it all made strange sounds. The hallway looked very creepy and very lonely. When the man opened our room the air conditioner was off and it was hot. It smelled really bad and old. My mom and I were in a state of "what do we do now!". After the man turned on the air and left, we inspectioned every single inch of the room. The night tables were all cracked and the knobs were missing. The night lamp was broken. The bathroom sink was all torn on the sides and every corner of the room was wrecked at the bottom and one corner at the top. At least there was cable and wireless. We decided that since it was a long trip I would stay there that night and the next day I would leave. My mom went home to Bayamon which is about 1-2 hours away and as soon as I went to sleep I started to hear all kinds of strange noises. I felt as if someone was watching me. I couldn't sleep. All of a sudden I saw bugs and roaches crawling out of the refrigerator and wrecked corners of the room. I was so shocked tat I called my mom and she immediately made the trip back and got me out of there. Very disgusting. I went and stayed at the Passion Fruit Bed and Breakfast. Now thats a nice hotel. The owner is so sound to earth and nice.

“avoid this one”

I had read some positive things in a couple guide books, so we decided to try Anchor's Inn (due to the reasonable price). We had planned on staying two nights, but left after one. We almost left in the middle of the night, as it was so noisy. Granted, we were there on a Saturday night, but it was almost impossible to sleep. There is a restaurant across the street with a pool table crowd, plus, a really noisy family across the street. The room itself was marginal. I saw a cockroach in the bathroom. For an extra $30, you can stay a couple miles away at the wonderful Passion Fruit Bed & Breakfast. Stay away from this one...

“Can someone say "flophouse"?”

I want to start by saying that I have traveled around the world and stayed in all sorts of hostels/hotels/motels---you name it. Anchor's Inn has got to be one of the most sketchy places I have ever set foot in. Where to begin?

First of all, the area is quite sketchy and very desolate. When we walked in, there was no one around. We went to the bar and finally a woman came over. Now, my husband made the reservation in English but when we got there, no one spoke English. Fortunately, I speak Spanish. We had to have been the only people in the place (off-season), so we tried to be very sporting about this. Nonetheless, who did he make the reservation with?
A woman led us to our room, snapped on the AC, and rudely slammed the door. The room smelled like old urine. It was stuffy and poorly ventilated. There were stains on the carpet, a drab comforter on the bed, a plastic table and chairs jammed in the corner, and the bathroom...filthy beyond imagination. My husband looked at me and said, "Do you want to leave?" And leave we did. I have never done that. Never. It was like "Escape From Fajardo"! My recommendation: Go to Vieques.

“Too dark and grim -- So we left . . .”

I'm fairly surprised by the positive reviews. I'm not particularly fussy, but I found this property so grim (paint peeling off the strange barred red and black stripes on the exterior, dark, almost unfurnished interior room-- although I did not see any of the view rooms-- plastic covered couch in the hallway). The location is between a beautiful beach (a few minutes drive away) and the town of Fajardo, -- but the immediate area around the hotelseemed to be an unpleasant neighborhood and loud. No garden. Overall impression of an unwelcoming, dark hotel.

Anyway, although we put down a night for a deposit, we left and stayed elsewhere.

“Charming, wonderful, the best!”

We stayed several nights at Anchor's Inn in late May. Out of all the places we stayed in PR, this was the best, by far. The prices were very moderate compared to other places in the Fajardo area, and moreover the owners and staff will treat you with a warm honest hospitality, a commodity which even in its ordinary lame rehursed form is usually worth a penny. This was the real thing. The rooms were interesting in architecture (the whole place has an interesting architecture!) and clean enough. In the restaurant, Jose-Maria, French cook and owner, makes a sauce forestiere which is beyond words - try it, if you only have one night in Puerto Rico try it! The waiter Pedro has a family recipe for a cilantro sauce he'll serve with the bread and salad which is, likewise, amazing. This is the place to come to for heavenly sauces. In addition, the place has an atmosphere which is decidedly more "genuine" than many other places.

  • Liked — The food, the owners, the waiter, the building and its atmosphere.
  • Disliked — There's some noise from a nearby bar sometimes, but it usually packs in reasonably early.
  • Tips/Secrets — Try the sauces!
