“Wahooooo”

I was at Gone Fishing Panama the last week in October 2011. The rainy season was coming to an end and the the weather was great. The resort is very relaxing, the food was wonderful, all the staff very nice and were right there whenever I needed something. We fished everyday and caught wahoo, tuna, dorado, rooster fish and cabera snapper. Bruce and Donna were very nice and bent over backwards to ensure a first class stay.

“Secluded and relaxing”

The resort/hotel is comfortable and clean (furnishings a little dated but I can see how it's hard to get anything out there). It's hard to get to without a car (even then you have to go on a rocky/gravel road) but once there it's peaceful and beautiful. The water and surrounding islands are gorgeous. They helped us hire a water taxi for the day. It was heavenly. It was also whale season so we saw a mother and baby humpback whale up close. Then they took us to a gorgeous white sandy beach. It was really paradise. As the website says though you should bring your own food...there's nothing around. They provide breakfast (the best pancakes!!!) and will make dinner for you. Dinner was delicious. They can accommodate dietary needs if you let them know ahead of time. Overall very friendly and accommodating. Someone was always there to attend to our needs. It is pretty remote though so 2 days was plenty for us. If we had had our kids with us, I'm sure they would have been very accommodating. Seemed very kid friendly.

“Skip this Place!”

We had high expectations of this place due to the Fodor's review. We called the day-of and requested a room, (we specified that we were interested in one of the lower priced rooms as we were only staying 1 night) the owner seemed really friendly and said no problem.

My husband and I are a younger couple, but very polite and well travelled -- we have never had issues with staying in B&Bs or staying with locals. However, when we arrived the husband who managed Gone Fishing didn't even acknowledge us! He walked back into the house and didn't even greet us. We stood outside awkwardly wondering what to do. One of the guests waiting to be taken out fishing went in and got the owner's wife for us. The owner then proceeded to walk right past us without saying a word and asked the other guest if he was ready to go out fishing. We let the wife know we had called ahead and specified the room we called about. She proceeded to take us on a tour of EVERY open room in the house at a higher rate (the lower level rooms stank of must and mold) and then never bothered to show us the lower priced room we had driven all the way there for. My husband inquired about the room and price we had been quoted and then she "suddenly" remembered the other 2 rooms she had failed to show us. The rooms were AWFUL for the price and cramped, but we felt stuck as we had driven all the way there and just wanted a place to stay for the evening.

We could have accepted a less-than-spectacular room if only the owner's had showed some level of kindness and hospitality. We read another review about poor service and thought perhaps it was a fluke. Definitely not the case, these owners are rude and shouldn't be in the B&B business at all.

“A great place to stay and fish!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2011

Gone Fishing Panama was just what we were looking for! Clean and comfortable rooms (with a good air conditioner), delicious food, great fishing, a relaxing atmosphere and all for a reasonable price. Bruce and Donna and the staff were all very friendly! At times, I felt like I was staying at a friend's vacation home rather than a hotel. We fished 2 days and caught big tuna on both days and several large dolphin on the 2nd day as well. Be sure and call, rather than email, if your wanting a reservation. I tried the email address on their website, that didn't work to connect me with them, but picking up the phone did.

“Wish we were still there!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2010

Hi Bruce and Donna,

I have to say that Steve and I wish we were still in Boca Chica with you guys. We made it up to Bocas del Toro and have said we should have extended our stay at Gone Fishing Panama instead of heading to the Caribbean side. It is rainy here, and cold!! We had perfect weather, perfect island excursions, and good food. So relaxing. Everything was perfect.

Thanks for the great time, and Donna, your apple tarts were DELISH! And Steve wants some more of the ice cream :)
