“Excellent food, best we had on our trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Yes there are lots of steps but how could it be built into the rock side without that. Room was large, comfortable and airy, plenty of good lighting. Ants run round the wash basis but this is a natural setting so expect it. Lovely grounds with lots of animals and birds to spot. Good base for visiting the rainforest. Food was 6 course dinner, best we had in the whole of Sri Lanka and their packed breakfast and lunch was also the best. Only slight downside was after the busy time over Xmas/NY they only had one red wine available and no white. Staff were always available and attentive.

Room Tip: All rooms appeared similar from what we saw

“Charming location , terrible rooms!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

It’s a perilous journey almost 5 hours away from Colombo, upon entering you are enthralled by the location and the sheer rapture of the jungle.
and then you climb 50 steps up through caves and water ways to be even more mesmerized only to enter the rooms and be terribly disappointed !
It’s all ready dangerous enough climbing up slippery steps which I wouldn’t recommend for kids or any one with weak knees!
The outward rustic charm of the Resort is completely ruined by the musty smelling bed bug infested rooms .
The sheer stunning quality of its grotto restaurant fails you with food that lacks flare and imagination!

“a unique experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2011

We arrived after a long drive and enjoyed the first impressions, long and steep staircase up to reception, jungle all around us and monkeys playing in the trees above , but , alas once we scaled the long walk up to reception ... no-one was there, so we sat and tried to find the office contact details, eventually a garden worker saw us and alerted a front office staff.
Quirky rooms and good size with two levels , toilet area only separated from room by a curtain so not for all! I loved being so close and personal with nature but would have preferred a few more comforts at the price . Jaccuzi was fun and worked well.
Dinner was unusual and ok, a ' seven ' course meal served quickly and well enough presented . The dining experience itself though was more exciting , we sat under a huge boulder , rain pouring around us in the forest and the sounds of nature made it a wonderful experience. Lighting at dinner is terrible and an elderly lady slipped on the way down to her bedroom and in fact we too , although a lot younger, had to watch our step.
Like many hotels in Sri Lanka that we stayed in, and I still cannot work out why, this has so much potential, but it is almost as if the owners are happy leaving the hotel to fall apart so long as tourists come, but soon reviews will be so bad that tourists will not come! Please owners, do your hotel up, it has the makings of a truly wonderful tourist experience.
Staff were all very kind and helped to the best of the ability.

“Enchanting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2011

We arrived mid-afternoon, tired from 5 hours of driving and not excited by the last 500 metres of "track" in a jeep to reach the hotel. Then the enchantment started - the dark gray of the boulders, the trickling wet floor to traverse to reach reception, the climbing of large stone steps, unsure but intrigued - the feeling that this was going to be an experience to remember. Our room on 3 levels with all windows opening to the noises & smells of the rainforest - swimming in the clean cooling water of the hotel pool - sipping tea and pretending to read but really listening to the forest - sitting at the writer's table imagining endless time to write & think - dining (7 courses with excellent wines) under the boulder (French cuisine - the best Western food in Sri Lanka) - listening to the enthusiastic stories of the staff - lying on the bed, covered by just a sheet, letting the night and early morning sounds penetrate your imagination - sitting on the steps drinking tea before the rainforest excursion - returning exhausted (and leech affected) to the hotel after the rainforest trip to be served fresh juice and fruit, soft omelettes, fresh bread and coffee - sadness as we looked back on leaving knowing we had no time for the caves, the walks, another swim, another meal. Sure, this hotel may be too challenging to many but to us it was enchanting

Room Tip: Not an hotel for the walking impaired

“Dangerous”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2011

In Sri Lanka they sell a floor tile that is non-slip, but wall tiles are cheaper. Unfortunately in this hotel they have used the cheaper wall tiles on the floor. I was walking from the upper level to the steps down to the shower, slipped, landed sideways on my ribs on the corner of the step, and bounced 180 degrees and landed on my other side gasping and trying to breath.

I was fortunate, I caught my ribs and not my head.

The accident was reported to the staff, who seemed powerless to do anything and could not it seems even call the owner, we were told that the manager was hiding.

I spent five hours in agony driving from the location (no ambulance was offered) in my car to Colombo to the hospital. I was taken in and kept overnight due to extreme pain and possibility of complications.

Two weeks later I wrote an email to this hotel to tell them in writing again what had happened/ They did not even have the courtesy or professionalism to even acknowledge or reply to my email.

Room Tip: Don't stay here, its dangerous
