“A sanctuary not just for the animals but for people too.”

Exhilirating experience. Most gracious managers who made this solitary traveler feel in good company. A sunrise game drive and ample bush breakfast atop a hill was most special. Accommodations are immaculate and comfy and every meal is a treat. A most knowledgeable and pleasant guide whose enthusiasm is infectious. Lewa Downs serves up varied vistas and wildlife and you will never tire of venturing out to discover its wonders. The pool area was under renovation but a nice veranda offers a great spot to relax in the sun in between drives. For those who want to blog or facebook or skype with friends and family there is no easy access to internet and it's costly to access but worth the wait and just soak up the experience. Small things make a special difference: The personal wake-up call accompanied by coffee and biscuits; the hot water bottle to warm your bed; Treacle the terrier makes you feel you are visiting friends at home.Lewa is synonymous with lovely.

Room Tip: Try to get a tent facing the sunrise ....

“Gracious hosts, knowledgeable guides and up close and personable with amazing wildlife.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

If you are interested in an amazing safari where you can see the Big Five, this is it! Two game drives a day where you off track to get really close to the wildlife. Great photo opportunities while enjoying a Tusker. The food, atmosphere, service and staff are second to none! AMAZING experience!!!

“Luxurious tent in the middle of a reserve”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Izzy and Murray are wonderful hosts and make you feel like you are their most favorite guest. We spent part of our honeymoon at Lewa and enjoyed every minute of it. The tent is large, airy, and comfortable. The laundry services are great, but because of local customs, you have to do your own underwear. There are many activities besides going out on safari, including horseback riding and visiting a village or forest. The horseback riding is fun because you get closer to the animals. The forest was a nice change that involved hiking, walking across a long, treetop bridge, and jumping into waterfalls. The food at Lewa was delicious and all dietary requirements are honored. The wines were wonderful and paired well with the meals. Each night at dinner, we were greeted by genet cats, which are about the size of a house cat. We also were surprised one night with a special honeymoon dinner with a table overlooking the pool. Our driver was Festus - he was very knowledgable and friendly. Overall, we had a great experience at Lewa and would love to visit again.

“Lewa Safari Camp.. the unexpected experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

The accommodations at Lewa Safari Camp are lovely, spacious and well appointed semi-permanent tents with a very comfortable king sized bed, more than adequate storage space, a huge dressing area, double sinks and a wonderful hot water shower. A huge bonus was the added shelf in the dressing area with an outlet for electronics. The shelf was large enough for my bags of toiletries as well as for charging camera batteries and my iPad! After lunch, I particularly enjoyed relaxing on the veranda where reading a book was so peaceful that each afternoon included a short nap. Guests should be aware they share Tent 9 with a beautiful Grey-headed woodpecker who lives in one of the support posts. This cheeky bird seems to enjoy shocking his tent mates by flying at rocket speed from the post hole and then casually perching on a tree branch within feet of the veranda. This bird was too fast to photograph but non-the-less remains a delightful memory!

At Lewa, the common lounge area feels just like being in a friend’s warm and comfortable living room. Several cozy areas allow families to gather or those of us traveling independently, an opportunity to meet and discuss the day’s adventures with other guests. Note that my husband and I particularly enjoyed conversing with Treacle!

Throughout our stay at Lewa Safari Camp, service was attentive and very friendly. Unfortunately my journal (with names) has gone missing but I clearly remember lovely Patience, Jim (James?) who poured the perfect glass of wine and that Festus was a fabulous guide!. In addition, our Askari diligently protected us as we walked to and from the tent, jumped and yelled “snake” when appropriate and always smiled when he did not understand my not-so-clear English. Hosts Izzy and Murray entertained, accommodated and pampered their guests as if they were the most important members of royalty. They both work so hard, are on-call 24/7, appear to have the energy of teenagers and it is clear, they truly care about their guests, the camp and Lewa Conservancy.

On arrival, I did notice that there were numerous guests with young children. Initially I thought that due to the accommodation of families, Lewa would be a disappointment for those of us in our late 60's and early 70's. After several days, it was clear that Izzy and Murray have that situation under control! Families with young children dined early, when possible away from adult tables, and with their own driver/guides, we rarely even saw their vehicles. Although I prefer an adults-only environment, Lewa is such a wonderful conservancy, I can not wait to return.

Fortunately Festus, our ranger and the local guide all insisted I learn to say Ngare Ndare! What a magnificent destination and memorable excursion. In my opinion, everyone that stays at Lewa Safari Camp should take a day to visit the forest and climb to the waterfalls. Thanks to a the helping hands (literally) of the local guide and the ranger, I climbed the steep hill, followed their path through the rocks and crossed the water numerous times without falling. They were with me every step of the way!

Of all the guides on this two-week trip to Kenya, Festus was clearly my favorite. He is intelligent, kind, sensitive, calm and someone my husband and I looked forward to seeing each day. Hopefully Festus will be at Lewa as guide for my future clients!

Room Tip: Take the excursion to the waterfall!

“The highlight of our Kenya trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

Issy, Murray (and Treacle) have made this camp into a real gem. They really could not do enough to look after us and incorporate our requests for various day trips. Whilst the guided safaris were excellent, our forest visit was something very out of the ordinary. Do ask for this day trip if you are staying here - guided walks through lush green forest, canopy walks and a swim in the lagoon at the bottom of a waterfall - all in the middle of kenya. Outstanding. Food is exceptional and tents are luxurious with wonderful showers and hot water on tap. 10/10.
