“Great Location, Odd Management”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

With an incredible location and easy access to Zion National Park, this was a very memorable place to stay, except... on a night when the hotel appeared to be nearly empty, the management gives us a room whose morning view is blocked by the staircase. We drove from Bryce Canyon to Zion Canyon and drove through the Eastern part of Zion after dark to get to Springdale, UT for our reservation at the Pioneer Lodge. So we did not have a clue as to what the surrounding landscape was like. After some "three stooge" like meanderings on the part of the family at the front desk, they finally figured out where to put us... the place may have had two cars in the parking lot. They put us in a room that was on the first floor and was behind the stairwell. If you open the window blind, you see the back side of the stairwell. In the morning, we walk out to see the incredible views of the surrounding mountains. We had no idea! My only real complaint is that of all the places that they could have put us for the night, we got put in a place with no view from within the room. We left and enjoyed Zion quite a bit. The room was cute and had a nice lodge type interior. I would stay there again, but I would ask for a room with a better view.

Room Tip: If it is not full, ask for a room with a decent view!

Dear JohnKurtz,

Thank you for you kind words! We are happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and you like the decor of our property! We were unable to place you in a room with the beautiful view you and your family deserved to wake up to due to the fact that we are working on the thorough maitanenace of our rooms and therefore we did not have room with canyon view available, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Ana

“Breathtaking view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We stayed in late December, when the rates are about 40% of peak season (not "off," mind you).

The place was sold-out, but we managed to find a spot in the parking lot. It was quiet, despite the throng. The office was closed, and an envelope with my name on it was taped to the front door. The key card was inside. I thought that was fantastic. For one thing, it implicitly communicates "we don't have crime here."

I found a heated laundry room (coin-op washer & dryer on site, for you rugged types). The rooms are simple, clean. The kitsch is cute, but basically it's a motel room. There's a fridge and a microwave, and plastic cups rather than glasses for your whisky.

The web site failed to mention that the restaurant was "closed for the season." That was a disappointment. But there are plenty of restaurants nearby, as the entire strip of road is for tourists. The owners are a family, as far as I could tell. They provided free coffee, espresso and latte to their guests in the "internet cafe," which is also the motel lobby. I enjoyed eavesdropping on and occasionally participating in the banter between the two attending desk persons, I assume sister and brother. She was especially sassy, mildly snarky in way that I thoroughly enjoy because it's definitively not Faceless Corporation.

I thought Pioneer Lodge would be a good stop on the Northeast-Southwest drive. On Google Maps it appears sit on a highway connecting I-15 and I-70. Here's the bad news: The road costs $25, even if you're not planning to hike, pan for gold, grill rattlesnakes, etc.

The view is amazing, and Zion's park entrance is spitting distance. I hope to return when the restaurant is open.

Internet was spotty because their wireless modem had not been fully enabled. I'm sure they fixed that problem once I'd explained it.

“Very good value!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We stayed at the Historic Pioneer Lodge for one night while exploring Zion National Park. It was a really pleasant surprise. The room was really cute. Log cabin style with homemade wood accents- such as a coatrack whittled from pine. Room had a nice mini-fridge and a microwave as well. Overall cleanliness was good, and the bed was comfortable. Nice smelling organic soaps and lotions produced locally.

Only a few minor exceptions keep me from giving this property 5 stars- (1) Shower drain was clogged and both my gf and I had to shower in some standing water...gross (2) There was some question about whether or not I paid for the room in advance when we checked in, as I booked through Kayak. I was told that Travelocity (whom Kayak had booked the room through) is always making things unclear and difficult, but that they usually sort things out without too much issue. The charge had already posted to my cc account. I trusted the manager, and it was sorted out correctly, but it was wierd for a minute. (3) I know it is a tiny town in the middle of a national park, but the TV was ancient :) Probably 20 years old. I could camp in the park and do without TV altogether and be just as happy, if not happier. But when I first walked in, I laughed at how old the TV was. C'mon. Even an upgrade to a FLAT TUBE would be better than this old beast. It was like watching my grandma's TV...when she was alive 15 years ago!!!

We would recommend this place. The view is great (but it is everywhere), and it is one of the closer lodges to the park's main attractions, but there are some other lodges that look just as cute, if not better, just down the road. We may try one of those next time, or just camp in the park.

“warm comfortable room in great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We upgrade to a King bed room, everything seemed very clean, well kept or fairly new. The hotel was quiet but that was to be expected at that time of the year.
Staff was not very helpful. And please don't advertise a spa if you close it during winter.
We only spent one short night and left early to go hiking. Best way to get parking in the park even in the winter months.
We would come back to the hotel, seemed good value for the money.

“Great!”

We stayed one night because we couldn't get that night at the Zion Lodge in the park, and we loved the Pioneer Hotel! Great room, great swimming pool, really nice staff, and you can walk around town.
