“Residence Inn Tysons Corner Mall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

This has been the fourth time I spent a part of the Christmas holiday at this Residence Inn. Usually we have a first floor room at the end of the building. This time we had a third floor room – Room 306.

The rooms appeared to have been updated pretty recently. Warm , bright colors, new carpet, bedding, cabinetry and countertops. Good room layout with plenty of power outlets. Great water pressure in the shower.

The only negative with this room was that you were able to hear the elevator “ding” whenever it stopped on the floor. For a brief period you would hear the conversations of the other guests as they departed the elevator but that quickly went away as they entered their rooms. I would suggest requesting a room a distance away from the elevator if you are a light sleeper.

Another minor quirk was that the maid kept stopping by to try to clean our room even though we had the sign out stating that no service was needed. In hindsight, I should have just called the front desk to let them know that we did not require it. English was not her first language and I was not smart enough at the time to just call downstairs.

The hotel’s location is pretty good. It is close to the two Tyson mall locations. A McDonalds, a Middle Eastern restaurant, Subway are all less than a block away.

For those staying over the holidays … if you plan to require the hotel shuttle check before booking your room. There was a sign on the counter stating that the shuttle would not be available for a certain number of days during the holiday weekend.

“Exceptionally adequate”

We got a lot for our money at this hotel. I've never stayed anywhere that provided free dinner, wine, and beer (Mon-Thurs.) as well as free breakfast (all 7 days)! Also, free Washington Post. Fresh-baked cookies in the afternoon. Small but pleasant outdoor pool -- much appreciated in the Washington heat. Fridge and cooking facilities and free wi-fi in the room. Also free parking.

An additional unexpected bonus was the ability to go walking directly from the hotel, which has become for me a significant criterion in my rating of hotels. While the area is congested with some very busy roads, every road has a sidewalk, so we were able to walk to the malls as well as taking more relaxing walks through a residential neighborhood across Old Courthouse Road from the Marriott. Thanks to Google, I had printed out street maps ahead of time. (Some reviewers have complained about not being able to walk to the malls, but if you are used to walking for exercise, the walk is doable.)

The main reasons I give this hotel four rather than five stars:

The food, while ample and edible, was not especially memorable. I was happy, however, to see fresh fruit and yogurt at breakfast, in addition to more caloric options.

Our room was quite small, especially for three people. (Our son was with us.) We are used to managing in tight spaces, so it didn't bother us too much, but some people might have trouble. If I were to do it again, I might spring for two rooms. Our bathroom, however, was huge!

The wi-fi was a little spotty, but my son, whose laptop is like a fifth limb, was able to find a better connection by moving around the room.

All in all, I found this to be an excellent choice for anyone not on vacation.

“great hotel”

Beautiful new room, looked like a little apartment. Great modern colors, perfect little kitchen, felt like home. Good enough gym to get some cardio in. Breakfast was just ok. Felt rushed, lady actually started cleaning the food and dishes out while still eating. Very nice outdoor pool. Would definitelly stay again!

“Decent enough but annoying”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

Decent suite with kitchen, beds decent too. Good beer for after social hour M-Th. Ther were a number of annoying things:

1. The AC in the dining room broken, so you have to sweat while you ate.
2. The bed pillows were itty bitty. head kept sliding off.
3. No on demand movies.
4. If you need laundry done, don't leave bag in your room, the maids will ignore it.
5. If there is a mistake on your bill, the manger doesn't stroll in until 10, and the regular front desk people can't fix.
6. The location is across the street from a subway. That is it. Forget walking anywhere in the summer.

If you can get a corp rate at a nicer place, take it

“Good place but not near the Mall as it sounds!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2010

I stayed in this place for a night and the property is good- rooms are nice, WIFI works really well, happy hours seem popular and most importantly staff are nice. Their shuttle ferries people back and forth around this property but the Mall is not close as it sounds in its name- it is a good 15 minutes by vehicle and the metro is around 20 minutes from the Hotel. this place is ideal for those with own vehicles or those not bound by tight timeline as mobility is dependent on their shuttle. But must admit that their cooperation in ensuring guests' comforts is great- good place and will revisit them again. Elevators and the carpets need cleaning but room is clean enough.
