Getting to the hotel from the west of the city was really convoluted, and my GPS actually took us south to Kentucky before routing us north to the hotel which is on the east side of the city. My friend and I arrived at the hotel late at night after a long day of driving, and our first clue that this was a hot-sheets hotel was when we discovered that there was no lobby open at 10:00 p.m. The check-in was a drive-through with a pull-in/pull-out type of drawer found at drive-through bank tellers.
The clerk was puzzled by my use of the Best Western card with 'units' on it, but eventually took it (the person taking my reservation a week earlier was also baffled but the national help line got him sorted out). I had gotten the card on a previous trip to Europe and had a few units left on it to use up.
We had two rooms for one night, and my friend and I were each appalled with the smell in each room (next door to each other and on the main floor). There was NO elevator to rooms on the second floor, and we were somewhat concerned for our safety staying on the main floor but could not get all our luggage hauled upstairs by ourselves.
My room smelled as though someone has been sick to his stomach and missed the toilet. We were both so tired after a long day of driving, and the time of night was late, that we gave up and stayed there out of exhaustion. We each just turned out A/C units onto high and kept the bathroom fans on, and went to sleep. The sheets were clean (not sure about the bedspread though) and the beds comfortable, but we may have been the only two women there who were not 'for hire' (hourly rates).
The next morning the day manager apologized for the carpet smell, and offered free certificates for another stay (which we declined). The breakfast buffet was adequate, and we did find a few families who had stayed there too.
All in all, I should have checked Travel Advisor before I made the reservations.
