My wife and I needed to take some time off from work and the daily grind, so we decided to spend a few days in Walla Walla to buy local wine, eat great food and get some rest. We prefer B&Bs in small towns since the hotels can be so impersonal, reminding me more of being on just another business trip. Our stay at the Woodhaven began Sunday afternoon and ended on Thursday morning.
The Inn at Woodhaven Farm is a brand new B&B, having opened for business in May 2007. The house itself was extensively updated after being purchased by sisters Jill and Laurie (and their husbands), but the style of the 1906 farmhouse has been retained. It's difficult to tell which changes to the house were made in 2006 and which were original, an attention to detail that is not normally found in B&Bs.
Jill and Laurie like to say "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper". This is the reason for their high-quality and very generous breakfasts, offered at 9am in the main floor dining area which is flooded with light and a great way to wake up. The sisters mentioned a background in catering, which explains their delicious multi-course breakfasts (including dessert) offered each morning. Our favorite morning during the stay began with this meal:
Orange Poached Pears with Raspberry Coulis
French Toast with Lemon Blueberry Sauce
Link Sausages
Cran/Raspberry Sorbet with French Puff Meltaways
Fruit Juice
Coffee/Tea
It was difficult to turn down such great breakfasts. Since our normal daily routine at home is to have little more than coffee for breakfast, we had to adjust our routine a bit such that we had a very light lunch and then we would have an appetite for dinner at a local Walla Walla restaurant.
We stayed in the Willow Room which was very comfortable and cozy. We got into the habit of leaving a small window open at night for a fresh breeze, something that I haven't done since I lived on a farm 30 years ago. The bathroom had updated plumbing fixtures, including the shower which had more pressure than my shower back at home, a good thing and rare in older houses! My wife liked the big terrycloth robes that were hanging in the bedroom closet. The queen bed is comfortable but is somehow attached to an older frame which results in squeaks and groans from the bed when either my wife or I moved during the night.
The only issue we had with the room we chose was that the flat panel TV mounted to the wall in the adjacent Hawthorne Suite could be heard too well from our room at night. When I mentioned this problem to Rick (Jill's Husband), he explained how they added considerable soundproofing to this common wall when the house was being renovated. The noise was a problem for just one night since the TV was not used in the suite for the rest of our stay. We are not avid TV watchers, so it would be great if the TVs were removed from all rooms, but that's just my opinion. I think Rick and Jill are figuring out a way to provide more sound isolation so the TVs won't bother the guests.
Little extras, such as coffee brought to the rooms early in the morning, information on local restaurants and directions on how to find things in town, were what put this B&B on my favorites list. Jill and Laurie are new at the B&B management role, but they are starting off on the right foot. We plan to stay at the Woodhaven again in the spring during our next wine adventure.
