“What a great place!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2011

As a lady who loves to take weekends at local NC areas, specifically at B &B's, I would like to give a belated thumbs up to Stained Glass Manor for a stay which will always be in our good memories. A good friend of mine wanted to see my hometown in Louisiana, so I invited her to drive there with me from North Carolina back in Fall of 2007 I believe. I would have to check on the date. But when planning the trip, my friend, Mary informed me that while she had seen the Mississippi River from the plane, she had never been close up.. so I planned to stay in Vicksburg and found the Stained Glass Manor listed there. We booked the top floor room that was listed as less expensive, but because we were the only guests, the owner offered to let us move into an upgraded room of our choice at the same rate. We opted for the room that was purported to have belonged to Miss Vick, who was the lady of the house many years ago. The room was beautiful, the lady homeowner was very friendly, if somewhat proud of her home. She was very aware that there was much more work to be done on the property, but was keeping it very clean and very nice until those expensive repairs could take place. I have learned that those who are looking for perfection in a place to stay should find a Motel somewhere. I love the feel of long ago graciousness and beauty that we have unfortunately begun to erase from our modern day design.

As far as ghosts, we saw none, but I did have my one encounter with Orbs, which appeared as beautifully blue colored balls that reminded me of the Good Witch Glinda's appearances in the Wizard of Oz. I sat and watched them and counted (there were 14 of them) and oddly felt not fear but wonder as I watched them float from their source in our headboard and float around the room. After the orbs disappeared, I snuggled back down into the bed and went right back to sleep.

The breakfast next morning was served in vintage dishes. They were not matched sets, but I found that to be a wonderful arrangement, as they varied in color and picture, but not design. We were served a wonderful cheese sauce with eggs which was fantastic, and I have not been able to recreate that taste no matter how hard I have tried. There was a delicious fruit tray with fresh fruit both plain and chocolate dipped. Wonderful faire.. I appreciate your kindness and friendliness and hope someday to bring my husband there to repeat our stay.

there seems to be a war going on between the locals and non native b&bs owners.
i read the other reviews ,and if this family had trouble i didnt see it they would bend over backwards to help you.the food was great.and so were the owners. if you dont like sleeping in someones house,go to a hotel.

i enjoyed our stay there immensely. bill, and shirley, were wonderful hosts, and shared many interesting stories of the house, and of vicksburg. we spent the night in a beautiful room that was spotless, and the bed was one of the most comfortable i've ever slept on.
i've seen some reviews that were displeased about their stay, and can't understand why, because the hosts went out of their way to make our stay as wonderful as possible. i guess some people just can't be pleased no matter how hard you try.
the breakfast was one of the best i've ever had. it was hard to stop eating because it was so good.
i would recommend staying there to anyone that has any interest in history, and beautiful old houses. not to mention, if you have an interest in ghosts, then you are in luck, as according to miss shirley there are "a few" that reside there, all friendly of course. we did feel "something" around us a couple of times, and heard some strange noises. i told the "unseen residents" they were welcome in our room, but when we went to bed to keep it quiet, which they did. i found it fascinating myself.
i will, without a doubt, stay there any time i'm in the vicksburg area, and would recommend it to anyone.

“Crazy-do not waste time”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2008

SUCKED... We evacuated from Hurricane Ike on September 12, 2008. Not one day has went by since we checked out that I don't think about how "ripped off" I felt. If I had known these proprietors lives were in such a shamble, then I would not have checked in.
First of all, there are no curtains on the windows and the biggest window was in the bathroom right by the toilet. We stayed in the attic, which the kids loved because of all the toys that were kept up there (and closets of old clothes). Plus, there was a door that led to a room that we had no idea where it led. I stuck a piece of paper in the keyhole. I didn't know what was on the other side...and the lock was not on our side, So I put something in front of the door. We should have checked out, but the original owners were not there to check us in or out...some friend of the granddaughter's checked us in and she pretended to be the granddaughter. Just plain stupid and weird.
Secondly, even though we didn't stay the second night because I wasn't risking it, we were charged for the entire night ($124) and on top of that, charged $20 for the children, plus the $50 pet "deposit" that was NOT returned. She didn't even check the room before we checked out to see if our pet made a mess, which I know he didn't...why? because I didn't sleep that well!!! There was an ambulance outside and her teeny dog kept barking at our door. Just because a prior guest with their own "zoo" (according to Shirley) stayed there doesn't mean everyone else has to pay for that person's mess. Should I mention the mangy dog on the front porch? Yes, it had the mange...she admitted it. I then immediately directed both of my children to the bathroom sink to scrub their hands.
Thirdly, ill-hearted people take advantage of others' unfortunate situations by overcharging because their feeble minds assume that the government is going to reimburse during a National Disaster (like a hurricane or tornado). She told us that she was charging us for the second night because we could file it with FEMA. She wanted to be sure we were "filing it with FEMA". I guess that made her mind feel a little more less guilty knowing that we would all be paying for it in a round about way. Is that why we're taxed to death? Idiots who perform like this?
Finally, I was so discombobulated from all of the criminology the female innkeeper was throwing out there (trust me it was OUT THERE), that I couldn't get my children out of there fast enough. I would go into detail about the unfortunate incident that happened that night, but it's too personal for the proprietors. I felt like I was sucked into a black hole. As a matter of fact...Vicksburg was sad in general. I feel sorry for those people and I'll never complain about my hometown again!

“Sleepless in Vicksburg”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2008

The Stained Glass Manor was probably once a very grand home but has unfortunately suffered from lack of maintenance and repair in recent years. Their website leads you to believe that this bed and breakfast is a romantic place for couples, reunions, and getaway weekends. The only positive things I have to say about the inn are that the sheets and towels were clean and we had running water.

As we drove up the driveway and pulled into a parking space at the inn we noticed the deferred maintenance and general dirty and unkempt appearance of the side exterior entrance and the large front porch. A sickly looking but sweet little dog attempted to greet us but appeared to be too worn out. Handmade signs noting the hours of the museum tours covered the front door area.

We were greeted at the door by the innkeeper who was attired in a bathrobe and hardly looking like he was expecting us. After a lengthy chat with him, his wife and family arrived to continue the family history, give us their political opinions, and their not so subtle opinions of our state of origin in the North. The innkeepers asked us if we would like breakfast in the morning - the room rate was $99/night without breakfast and $125/night for the room with breakfast. We caught a glimpse of the littered kitchen and opted to leave without breakfast. The wife finally showed us to our rooms. The woodwork and stained glass in the house and the stairway are beautiful but the dirty, musty carpeting is a negative. The guest rooms are very large with many antiques but the bathrooms with the original clawfoot tubs clearly need upgrading. Our room had only a tub - no shower - which was very much not to our liking and the floor was cracked, the faucets leaked, and the medicine cabinet was filled with older, used toiletries.

At this point we debated whether or not to stay but since our credit card had already been taken we decided to give it a try. We were awake most of the night due to a telephone ringing several times after midnight, bad pillows, and a family member watching television in a nearby room.

Our overall experience of the Stained Glass Manor was so uncomfortable we fled our rooms as early as possible the next morning. Unfortunately this negative encounter has seriously tainted our view of Vicksburg which I believe otherwise could be a lovely town.
