“Oooold and housekeeping was kind of rude.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

The hotel is old and although it is being remodeled, the "new" rooms don't look too different from the old ones. My room was open when I got there, and front desk told me it might have been housekeeping so i was worried the whole weekend about leaving anything in the room. Housekeeping wouldn't respect the "Do not disturb" sign and they were kind of rude and even before knocking on the door, they would try to open it! Good thing i had locked the door from the inside!

“Met my needs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

I received a warm welcome from the hotel staff amidst the ongoing renovations.

Because the reviews are so inconsistent, I wanted to see a room first, and the hotel clerk accommodated my request immediately. The room was fine, given my good rate (~ $60 with tax). Bedspread worn, carpet tired, bathroom cleanliness adequate for my tolerance level. The TV worked. There is a ceiling fan in the room, which is always a plus for me. Free wifi.

Microwave and fridge also in room.

Free breakfast comes with the room, as do two free drinks in the lobby about 5:30 p.m. The breakfast was no-nonsense: bacon (good), sausage (didn't try), biscuits (good), gravy (didn't try), scrambled eggs (fine), juices. The coffee pot was empty when I arrived, which was not a good thing. So note that if you're into fruit or yogurt, you won't find it here.

There's a restaurant/cafe on site, with karaoke most evenings and a musician two nights a week.

The interior ice machines weren't working, evidently because of the reno work, which is a downer. There was a working machine outside the hotel, in the back.

The hotel is next door to the Vicksburg National Military Park. That is super convenient. For those who seek a motel of similar class as the Battlefield Inn (in its current condition), there's a Motel 6 next door to the Battlefield Inn you may want to research.

Overall impression: Albeit worn down, the Battlefield Inn met my needs, and I especially appreciated the friendliness of the staff.

“We won't go back”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

We booked our room through Hotwire. In the past we have gotten great deals with Hotwire, so I was shocked at the condition of this hotel. The front desk clerk was preoccupied and acted as though she was doing us a great favor to check us in. It was nice of the hotel to try to make up for its deficiencies with a happy hour, but I would have preferred to buy a drink and have a clean place to stay.

There was something black and fuzzy growing in the toilet. There was something green and slimy oozing from the ceiling by the bath tub. The condition of the room made me wonder if I dared eat the fabulous breakfast buffet that was provided in the morning.

Our room was on the ground floor near the outside door. The door was NOT LOCKED and there was no key entry--it was just open for the world to walk through.

This hotel needs a renovation badly. It looks like it was once a lovely place to stay, but no more! We are not hotel snobs and don't mind staying in older properties, but we expect them to be clean and well maintained. I am surprised Hotwire carries them.

Room Tip: Don't book this hotel--you won't get a good night's sleep!

“Old but interesting. One-of-a-kind.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

(The city of Vicksburg as a whole appears economically depressed and in need of updating. The older motels seem to be where you can get a room for under $100 a night. And they are not in the best of shape. There are some shiny, new hotels – but you will be paying premium prices.)

We were traveling with our pet and did a search for pet-friendly lodging in Vicksburg. Our price, with pet fee, was about $70 for the night.

What drew us to stay at the Battlefield Inn was the history. There were civil war cannons displayed about the property and there was a miniatures museum that specialized in historic naval warfare. Being history buffs, we decided to stop in for a closer look.

The lobby has a grand staircase and is stuffed with Gone with the Wind and civil war memorabilia. The hotel hosts a complementary cocktail hour in the lobby each evening – but we didn’t have time to attend. The hallways have framed covers of period magazines and there are displays of artifacts that have been excavated in the area.

The rooms themselves are old but clean. Our room had two queen beds, a desk, dresser, mini-fridge and microwave. The ceiling had water stains from a previous leak. The bathroom was small – but sufficient. The shower had awesome water pressure and plenty of hot water!

The hotel offers a complementary breakfast buffet. All the basics were available: bacon, eggs, biscuits, jelly, gravy, OJ, milk. Everything tasted good – but the biscuits were the highlight. So buttery - they were sinful!

Overall – I believe we would stay there again. The place is old – but it is packed with interesting history and hospitality. It is a one-of-a-kind lodging and worth taking time to explore.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

Made reservations on Wednesday for a ground floor room and was told that there was no problem and would have a downstairs room. Got there on Friday night and had an upstairs room and every downstairs room full. Not very good business to promise one thing and when you get there there they put you somewhere else. The reason for the downstairs room is because wife can't climb stairs very well and they were told that at time of reservations. The desk personal need to be told not to move reservations

Room Tip: The rooms were cleaner than they have been in the last three years. This is first time I have had an...
