I received a warm welcome from the hotel staff amidst the ongoing renovations.
Because the reviews are so inconsistent, I wanted to see a room first, and the hotel clerk accommodated my request immediately. The room was fine, given my good rate (~ $60 with tax). Bedspread worn, carpet tired, bathroom cleanliness adequate for my tolerance level. The TV worked. There is a ceiling fan in the room, which is always a plus for me. Free wifi.
Microwave and fridge also in room.
Free breakfast comes with the room, as do two free drinks in the lobby about 5:30 p.m. The breakfast was no-nonsense: bacon (good), sausage (didn't try), biscuits (good), gravy (didn't try), scrambled eggs (fine), juices. The coffee pot was empty when I arrived, which was not a good thing. So note that if you're into fruit or yogurt, you won't find it here.
There's a restaurant/cafe on site, with karaoke most evenings and a musician two nights a week.
The interior ice machines weren't working, evidently because of the reno work, which is a downer. There was a working machine outside the hotel, in the back.
The hotel is next door to the Vicksburg National Military Park. That is super convenient. For those who seek a motel of similar class as the Battlefield Inn (in its current condition), there's a Motel 6 next door to the Battlefield Inn you may want to research.
Overall impression: Albeit worn down, the Battlefield Inn met my needs, and I especially appreciated the friendliness of the staff.
