Our stay at the Duff Green was memorable. The staff is warm, friendly and very Southern! They seemed sincere about making our stay very comfortable. A young man greeted us upon our arrival, poured us drinks, gave us a tour of the property and showed us a short video about the property's "ghosts."
Our room was clean and comfortable -- and priced right, I think, compared to some other bed and breakfast properties in town. The house is beautiful and decorated with much attention to its history.
The breakfast the next morning was wonderful, cooked and served by the owner himself, a nice, older fellow -- very friendly and easy-going. Eggs, grits, sausage, bacon and biscuits, all served on beautiful china and set with care.
Now, I don't know that I would describe it as a negative, however, the only complaint about our stay involved these alleged "ghosts." I am a skeptic. I have never seen anything "paranormal," nor am I someone who goes looking for such things. However, something odd and out-of-the-ordinary -- for me, at least -- happened in the middle of the night of our stay.
I never have nightmares, but I had a very vivid one the night of our stay. I won't go into extreme detail, however, it seemed to mirror the history of the house as a Civil War hospital. It was frightening to me and honestly, unlike any dream that I have ever had.
Now, we were not staying in the supposed "haunted room," which is the Dixie Room. I hadn't been frightened upon going to bed and actually, I hadn't give the home's history much thought at all.
But perhaps strangest of all is that I awoke several times in the night sitting straight up, witnessed at least once by my husband, who sleeps like a log. I have never -- to my knowledge -- ever done this.
The next morning, at breakfast, the owner announced that a young couple from Louisiana who had stayed in the Dixie Room had several "experiences" in the night, got spooked, left early and would not be joining us for breakfast. He said that had only happened two or three times in about 20 or so years.
My husband and I just glared at one another.
I can't say with all certainty that what happened to me was paranormal, but it was "paranormal" to me and I won't soon forget it.
If I travel to Vicksburg again, I think I would stay at the Duff Green once more, but I won't expect to get much sleep!
