“"Fine, but not to dash and dine..."”

I was in Honolulu for business and a great rate was offered. I've stayed at this property several times because of its value. I am happy to say that the hotel has finally undergone renovation and the rooms have been significantly updated. If you are a visitor on vacation, I would recommend you stay elsewhere if you want to be close to the beach and the attractions of Kalakaua Avenue. For business, it's great because you can get in and out of Waikiki easily. The staff, particularly the valet parking folks, are efficient and friendly. So, too, the front desk. I was disappointed in two things. First, the hotel charged for Internet use in the Business Center. That didn't seem right, particularly for a Gold member. I also was disappointed that I couldn't take a few things to go from the breakfast buffet before heading off to a meeting. I never had a problem before taking fruit and yogurt, for example, if I don't have the time to sit down and dine. I've been able to do this at other Hilton properties, from Hilton resorts to Hampton Inns), but I was told it couldn't be done at the Alana. Oh, well. I guess every location has its own policies. Thanks to everyone else who made this stay at the Doubletree Alana so comfortable. Great job on the room remodel, too!

“Pleasant stay overall with a few hiccups”

I normally prefer to stay more in the thick of things in Waikiki but decided to cash in some HHonors points and this was the only hotel available. The location was definitely a drawback if you like to be in the heart of the action as it is on Ala Moana Boulevard at the far edge of Waikiki. There can be some street noise from the traffic. Still, I got some good exercise walking back and forth. The rooms were definitely the high point of the stay. Very recently remodeled, immaculately maintained, great shower and air conditioning. I had a lanai with a view of the ocean off in the distance. The service from the employees was friendly and cordial. They have a nice pool but it tended to get rather windy on the pool level. The gym had a great selection of cardio equipment. However there were a few minor bumps in the road that colored my stay. There were repeated elevator issues and one day 2 of the 3 elevators were out of service. This was a huge inconvenience in a very full hotel that was almost 20 stories. The breakfast in the restaurant was always disorganized with stacks of plates on empty tables and buffet trays that had not been replenished. I couldn't really complain because breakfast was free for me but it was obvious they were having some organizational issues. Overall it was a pleasant stay and I'd stay here again, if the hotel were right in the heart of Waikiki it would be perfect!

“Away from the Major Crowd Crunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

I stayed one night before running the Honolulu Marathon. As a result, I cannot comment on the hotel as a whole but I had a very good experience. The property is on the Ewa boundary of Waikiki and is a comfortable 15-20 minute walk to Ala Moana Shopping Center (where the race started), and the same time to the middle of Waikiki, or to the beach. I booked a king/mt. view room for one hundred thirty five bucks, which was a great price for the time and place. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. At check-in, I was given a (space-available HH Gold) upgrade to a penthouse king suite. The room itself was fantastic and since my stay was so short, I really did not get to take advantage of the space. However, it was very comfortable and was all that should have been expected. I loved having the fresh breezes blow in from the balcony. The view was “okay” and the Wi-Fi was fine, though, I did not stream content. I didn’t use the whirlpool tub but the shower was excellent. Because of the marathon, I requested and was given a late check-out without any second thoughts on the hotel’s part. I had three nasty blisters and asked the nearby housekeeper for a sewing kit. Within a couple of minutes, the kit showed up at my door and staffer refused to take a tip. I didn’t have a car but had a visitor park for two hours at a very small rate. The Sunday paper was complimentary where a number of Hilton properties I have stayed at, any paper delivered is automatically charged to the room unless a request is made to stop delivery. For HH members, the points/money splits could end up being very good values. Not all properties do that. Obviously, because of the upgrade, this stay was a tremendous value. On price alone, it appears that the stay would have been a good value. This property is away from the major crowd crunch. If I need to stay in this area again, I will consider this property.

“My bathroom could have used a bath; valet parking ONLY”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Staff was VERY nice, but I felt like I got less than I ordered. Room was clean, modern, but had no bath (only a shower). For the price there are hotels with complete rooms. Valet parking was only 4$ more expensive than at the Hilton parking garage, but it would be nice to know there were no other options. Pool was small, fitness area was adequate. Def not the worst, but nothing to write home about.
