“Adequate and clean”

Agree with other reviews when said you should rate this as a budget hotel. Good location if on a budget, has everything you need in a hotel, not everything you want. If beds and sliding doors were upgraded I would consider staying here again, Valet staff was the GEM of our stay. Front desk staff cold, unhelpful, and unfriendly no matter how many times we walked by them. Warning: I would not stay in here in the summer-the airconditioner in our room (kitchenette) woefully inadequate, also pool is tiny. No restaurant or bar, but some right across the street, and ABC market was a lifesaver. Decor in lobby a bonus but does not carryover to most rooms. It's doing ok in the competetive market of Waikiki, but we will pay more to stay somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Balconies are larger on lower floors

Thank you for your recent response. I am sorry that your stay wasn't up to your standards. I can say though, that we will soo be opening a bar on our lobby level which should provide some entertainment to our guests. Hopefully you will consider returning to Waikik on your next visit to the islands.

“minor misunderstanding gets me removed by police after checking in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

This hotel is usually clean and inexpensive. The glass doors to balcony are not insulated accoustically, so the rooms will transmit all bus car and siren sounds. I travel often and this was my 4 th time through this hotel and I had a dispute about a room charge, I had prepaid. In the attempt to resolve it, I was continually interrupted by the security gaurd who was attempting to help at the front desk. After completing this process and going up to my room I was forced to answer a phone that would not stop ringing, it was the security gaurd from the front desk attempting to explain to me how I was rude and harrassing "them", I was flabbergasted. How it it the security gaurd who was attempting to help do another persons job has the right to call repeatedly to my room and scold me?
I wrote it off to ignorance, and after making plans with a collegue, I went down stairs to make a formal complaint to the front desk person. I plainly stated how unprofessional and unwanted the phone call to my room was and how I felt the issue had nothing to do with the security gaurd, Warren, who continually interrupted in a most inflammatory and confrontational manner. At no time did I resort to yelling, abusive language or curse at either the person, the one I was addressing or the buttinski security gaurd. The situation escalated when I was not provoked by his advances, and he began accusing me of verbally abusing "them". I was so taken aback by this. He then threatend to call the police on me for harrassment, I responed "do what you think you must", not wanting to play this childish game anylonger. He called 911 and exclaimed that I was out of control and verbally assaulting them. I waited for the police officers to arrive, less than 3 minutes. The police officer walked right in offering his hand and greeting him, "Warren". I knew this had to be a common place for the police and I supposed this was Warren's way of exercising the little power he had. Anyway, I quitely went up stairs, got my bags and was escorted to the curb after Warren tried to have me sign some paper, I refused, getting a digital photo taken with out consent. I had to pay out of pocket for another room and at this point have still not been reimbursed.
The large company I work for has assured me that we will not be using the Waikiki gateway Hotel again. Please be careful if you choose to use this hotel, apparently thier customer service skills are extermely rudimentary, and the staff is very conflict oriented.

Room Tip: any room overlooking the park will be quieter, as the buildings reflect the traffic sounds. The high...

I am sorry to hear about your experience with one of our personnel at the front desk. Since we are such a small hotel, we encourage cross training across our departments and those tasks often overlap to provide better service and efficiency to our guests. Though it does not happen often with our security staff, they are all trained with the Front Desk operations. It appears this situation was a misunderstanding with a deposit issue for the reservation. I apologize if this wasn’t clearly explained. We have discussed this issue with our staff and will be better prepared next time around. Again, we appreciate your constructive comments and will learn from them so that we will be a better host to you guests in the future. Aloha.

“The photos are not real.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012 via mobile

The first thing I just want to say is that the hotel photos that you see on the site is not accurate to the real thing . The rooms are ok but I was expecting something a little better. The service is vary good and the folks at the front desk are vary nice. Valet is quick fast and easy to . The breakfast buffet if you get some kind of deal that includes it for free then I would but if not its not worth the $7.99 that they charge . Since all I do at my room is sleep and get dressed its fine. But the tv in the room just simply sucks it looks like a tv from the 1980s. So just don't be fooled by the photos of this place since they are not ever you see when you get here.

I apologize for this and can assure you that all of our room types have pictures that can be found on our website under the Accomodations tab. We have two large photos scrolling across the page on our homepage, one of our Penthouse guestrooms and the other of our Deluxe Waikiki room. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

“good location, but very loud and run down”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

the location is good - central to waikiki, walking distance to beach, BUT:
- very loud traffic noise (and that in an extra-paid 12th floor ocean view room. why? because hotel is at a fork of a major traffic artery and ther windows are single-paned, the doors to balcony not tight, the air con set in a hole in the wall with enough "air to breathe" ...
- the internet worked only so, so on 2 out of 5 days (we stayed for 5 nights)
- the hotel needs urgently a renovation to get up from maybe 2,5 stars developing country standard to 3-4 civilized world

Room Tip: if you book here (because of the pricing or you do not find anything else) do NOt go for ocean view...

Thank you for your honest review of your stay with us at the Waikiki Gateway Hotel. I'm sorry to hear that our location was a hinderence to your sleep at night, that's never a good thing. However, our location is on Kalakaua Avenue, just up the road from Waikiki's premier shopping and restaurants and beaches. Although it may not be for all people, we appreciate comments from all our guests. Our internet access was going through an upgrade which caused the hotel to have sporadic down time over a couple days. I'm sorry about this and perhaps we can have the opportunity again in the future to host you at the Waikiki Gateay Hotel.

“I couldnt fault this bargain find! Great stay!”

Why this place is so rated so badly I don’t know? Location is good, staff are friendly, the rooms are secure its just cheap & cheerful. Please don’t compare this to the Trump or other big branded hotels, this place does not try to be one, it’s a BUDGET hotel. We paid backpacker prices via the ‘Hawaii 5-0’ offer on their website for a room with balcony, TV, air-con even a fridge!

Yes, it’s a little rough around the edges if you want to look deeper but it served its purpose very well for our five night stay. Internet/wifi is free in the reception or level 3 in the ‘business centre’ where there are also free computer terminals.

If you want holiday in Honolulu where you stay in your hotel and sit around a pool this place is definitely not for you, but if you want a good nights sleep before exploring every corner of Waikiki or Oahu for that matter this is the ideal. Make sure you check the official hotel website for offers, I was so glad we did or we would have been in a mixed 10 bedroom dorm with proper floppy beds and shared bathroom for roughly the same money!

Room Tip: Bus number 20 to the airport pulls up straight outside, along as you luggage can sit on you lap! Tak...
