Okay, here's the deal.....my husband and I just returned from spending 5 nights at the Moana. It has a very charming atmosphere, with porch rockers, etc. We used Starwood points and would have had one of the awful rooms you will read about in these reviews If we had not upgraded to a tower room. These are rooms in the new high-rise tower that is connected to the main hotel. The rooms in the older historic part ofthe hotel are are one of two kinds.....either very old and not updated or remodeled and nice, but very small....and I mean small.....with no balcony which I feel is needed for wet bathing suits. So....get a tower room!!!
Also, take note...there is a $25 a day resort charge....which basically gets you nothing, and is excessive considering the price for these rooms! But, then again....everything's expensive in Honolulu:)
We only ate at the hotel's courtyard for lunch and it was good. I felt prices for breakfast and dinner at the other hotel eateries were overpriced. Beach can get crowded and is not very big. There is also a project going on all along Waikiki Beach.....sand being added to widen the narrowing strip. The pool does get crowded and it's hard to get a chair.
Our great find was the restaurants right next door at the Outrigger....don't miss them! They are Dukes and the Hula Grill......awesome food at fair prices.....for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Hope this helps you as you plan your trip.
