“A Charming Place.....If....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Okay, here's the deal.....my husband and I just returned from spending 5 nights at the Moana. It has a very charming atmosphere, with porch rockers, etc. We used Starwood points and would have had one of the awful rooms you will read about in these reviews If we had not upgraded to a tower room. These are rooms in the new high-rise tower that is connected to the main hotel. The rooms in the older historic part ofthe hotel are are one of two kinds.....either very old and not updated or remodeled and nice, but very small....and I mean small.....with no balcony which I feel is needed for wet bathing suits. So....get a tower room!!!

Also, take note...there is a $25 a day resort charge....which basically gets you nothing, and is excessive considering the price for these rooms! But, then again....everything's expensive in Honolulu:)

We only ate at the hotel's courtyard for lunch and it was good. I felt prices for breakfast and dinner at the other hotel eateries were overpriced. Beach can get crowded and is not very big. There is also a project going on all along Waikiki Beach.....sand being added to widen the narrowing strip. The pool does get crowded and it's hard to get a chair.

Our great find was the restaurants right next door at the Outrigger....don't miss them! They are Dukes and the Hula Grill......awesome food at fair prices.....for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Hope this helps you as you plan your trip.

....

Room Tip: Make sure you request a room in the tower!

“This is a god-awful hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Do these people really think they can charge these prices for the terrible services and food offered by this place? The food is nauseating. The room service is almost nonexistent. The rooms are noisy with worn out rugs and furniture. At least the facility had the decency to cover the stench of the guest rooms with deodorizer. On the other hand, they fumigated the rooms during our stay, leaving a pungent chemical smell.

You will regret your stay at this place.

Room Tip: This hotel is terrible. You should avoid it.

“Noisy, definitely not a 5-star experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed at the Moana Surfrider for 3 days while we visited family in Honolulu. I used to be a Starwood Platinum member, but have since switched programs, so made a reservation with no status... We got a "city view" room on the 2nd floor. Wow.

The room was nicely appointed, but there were ants in the room.

The windows were so old that they rattled, would not seal and did not drown out any sound from outside. Every sound from the port cochere echoed in our room, as did the noisy music from Kalakaua. People coming home from bars, honking their horns and screaming may as well have been in our room. In addition, the lounge music from the lobby was clearly audible in our room. Worst, however, was that deliveries started at 4:30 AM with the trucks honking their horn for attention out front, then lots of noise and yelling.

Besides the noise, the hotel is very popular with Japanese tourists for weddings. There are sometimes two or three a day. Most truly 5-star hotels would have a separate function area for this, but the Moana lets them use the lobby and staircase - which makes the lobby and staircase unavailable for guests. The limos going and coming for these events filled with the bride and family also make the valet service useless. It took us 45 minutes to get through the traffic jam to drop off our car.

All in all, this is just not a 5-star experience. I'd give it a generous 3-star rating, with a 5-star price. If you want to truly experience 5-star ambience, go visit the Halekulani, or the Royal Hawaiian - none of the frantic, noisy activity and vastly superior customer service. The Moana is devoid of any sense of peace and quiet.

To add insult to injury, the front desk service when we checked out didn't even ask how our stay was - just took the room key and gave us our receipt - not even a "have a nice trip".

In the future, we will forego the "bargain" $310 per night room at the Moana and go ahead and spring for a real 5-star hotel. It is sad this hotel has degraded this much - it used to be one of my favorites.

Room Tip: Upper floor, ocean view - anything else and you will get no sleep.

Thank you very much for your detailed review. As you pointed out, a downside of being a beachfront resort situated right on the Kalakaua Avenue is that our resort’s common areas experience a lot of foot traffic, from guests staying at our resort to visitors enjoying the history & beauty of the Moana – we hope you found the guestroom floors to be much more peaceful and private. Last but not least, we really appreciate your candid feedback regarding city view accommodation and our operations team will be looking into the noise concern right away. It is our sincere hope you will allow us an opportunity to welcome you back to the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa. Aloha.

“Charm, location, style, but not for families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

The oldest and arguably the grandest hotel in Hololulu, with Georgian style and sweeping open spaces, porches, and common areas. The staff was superb, and the proximity to beaches, downtown restaurants, Diamondhead, and the zoo are hard to beat. The room (3804) was a suite on the top floor with direct ocean views and a veranda equal is size to the room itself. The place is about as romantic a location as Waikiki has to offer. The food was good and the atmosphere memorable. Significant drawbacks were the limited pool area, the as-yet unrenovated bathrooms, and just about anything that would appeal to children.

Room Tip: Oceanside are MUCH quieter than city views.

First, our MAHALO to you for your gracious compliments! We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your time here at the Moana Surfrider and our staffs were able to share their “ALOHA” with you. Just as you experienced, I truly believe the Moana is the most romantic place in Waikiki, and perhaps for that reason, some guests might consider us to be a destination for “grown-ups” vs. families with children. In reality, we have many families staying with us throughout the year, especially with smaller children due to our proximity to the Waikiki beach which offers a perfect playground for children of all ages. Again, thank you for allowing the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa to be part of your island experiences and we look forward to welcoming you back to the First Lady of Waikiki. Until then, Aloha.

“High Tea in style”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

On the recommendation of Tropigirl I went and had High Tea on the Verandah at The Moana Surfrider. It was such a lovely afternoon. The setting is beautiful, the service elegant and the food divine. You start with soup, then out comes a tiered cake stand with sandwiches, little cakes and scones, and finally ending with a delicious green tea and lemongrass sorbet. Perfect. You get a choice of teas, and are given the pot, so no waiting around for a refill. Great views and people watching while you eat. Just delightful.

First and foremost, we would like to say MAHALO for taking the time to post a review. We appreciate your detailed comments & recommendations for future visitors, based on your Afternoon Tea experience at the oceanfront Veranda restaurant. Moana’s tradition of afternoon tea service began over 80 years ago underneath our historic Banyan Tree, where guests would relax through the warm hours of the day and take in the architectural beauty that fills the First Lady of Waikiki. It has always been our goal to insure the historical elements are in place throughout the resort to create a truly unique resort environment, and we are delighted you had an opportunity to experience this tradition first hand. Again, mahalo for your review.
