“Customer service is key. Rene, Clinton, (and another gentleman who worked at the front desk with a short ponytail [ I didn't get”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012 via mobile

My boyfriend and I are a dual military couple and he suprised me with a vacation to Hawaii. We arrived in Honolulu to find that our original hotel was not fit for human occupancy. We called about 15 other hotels and they were all full. We stumbled upon the Equus on the internet and Clinton was able to accomodate us for the three nights of our trip. Clinton had superb customer service skills, they were head and shoulders above any other person we spoke to that day. It was refreshing to speak to a person who genuinely cared about our needs. He booked us a room in the tower on the 10 the floor. There were some undesirable things about that room but we were not able to move until the morning because a member of our party was very sick. The next morning we packed our bags and went to the front desk and spoke with a gentleman. We briefly told him our problem and immediately he asked us to check out a room in the main building. Ur gave us a key and told us he would watch our bags. We went into the room, were blown away with how beautiful it was and went back and told him we'd love to have it. He quickly changed our room and comped our parking for the previous night. He too was extremely pleasant and genuinely concerned about our trip experience. We wrote a letter to the manager (Rene) telling her about our experience and I happened to meet her by happenstance a few hours later and she graciously comped our first nights stay. No questions asked. She is a lovely lady, inside and out. She has a very genuine and meek spirit and truly sets the bar for customer service. The staff at this hotel truly makes it superior to any other hotel I've stayed at. I will definitely be back. Words can't express the dedication this team shows to its patrons.

“the Truth...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

When my wife and I read a bunch of reviews of this hotel we were skeptical. Some people were complaining about the bugs, noise of traffic and how the rooms were inadequate. Truthfully we found The Equus to be a bit better than average but does not get the "Very Good" rating. There was nothing that made this establishment stand out. But what do you expect when you are on vacation in Hawaii. Are you really going to stay in your hotel room for the whole duration? If you are then why spend the money. Might as well stay home.

Parking is limited but the price is cheaper than the parkade that is connected to the Red Lobster.

There continental breakfast is served in a short time frame, from 7:30 to 9:00. You will need to be up pretty early to get any good choices in buns, fruit or coffee.

The rooms are comfortable (in the renovated section) which is only 10 floors. Beds are very comfortable. Be careful of the toilets they attack. You will see what I mean.

If you are looking for the 5 star rating you better check out the Hiltons or the Trump hotels. This is not, as I mentioned earlier, more than an average hotel.

Location of this hotel is on busy Ala Moana Boulevard. Yes you will here traffic but after a certain time period it does get quiet and you will be able to sleep. One thing my wife and I did not know is how close The Equus was to Ala Moana Shopping Center. You can basically walk there. Right when you leave the hotel make a right, you'll go over a little bridge, you'll come to a set lights, now the choice is yours you can go straight and make a right where the buses park or turn right now and left at the next availability.

Would we come back to The Equus. Yes because it's affordable, service is fabulous and location is not bad.

Oh and there were no bugs in our room #903.

Room Tip: Request to stay in the hotel tower not the condo side.

THE MARINA TOWER IS NO LONGER A PART OF THE EQUUS.
CONS- When we arrived we thought that it didn't look very nice. You have to walk up a flight and a half of stairs to get to the main lobby. The elevator is right when you walk in so it felt like the staff doesn't have to communicate with you if they don't want to. We were really sad that there wasn't a hot tub. We came back from our first day of walking all day and all night and wanted to soak in the hot tub and they said it was apart of the "Marina Tower" an they no longer are apart of that. They have a teeny tiny pool that is freezing cold and it is shaded so you can't lay out in the sun. Another problem was hotel parking. We rented a car in the morning and then at night when we got back to the hotel there was 1 slot open. So we parked in it and went to tell them we were parked (it's $18 a night) and they said the lot was full for the night. They only had 8 parking slots for the whole hotel. We had to go to a parking garage across the street. It was okay but it was just inconvenient. and annoying. I asked in the morning if there was any open slots and they said they wouldn't know for awhile until someone checked out or returned the car. The hotel is right next to the street so the road noise was extremely loud.
PROS- The room was fine. The mini fridge was nice so we could buy bottled water at the grocery store to save a little money. I say the room was nice because we were only in it at night to go to bed. It was a good location. Close to many fast food and restaurants, shopping and the beach.
