If you are looking for a clean, friendly place to stay near the International Center, great restaurants, evening street performers and the beach, this will do fine. It does have it's quirks. We decided on it because A) There was a limited choice of affordable hotel rooms available because of Pro Bowl. B) We read these reviews on tripadvisor. Most of what I read is true. What I like is the fact that the hotel manager responds here. That shows me that she cares about the place.
PROS:
Spotless rooms. Location. Helpful and friendly staff, (although Michael at the front desk could make more of an effort to look in the back for clean beach towels, like all other front desk staff did.) Overall, staff is excellent. Lobby is spotless.
Gym. Small but good equipment variety.
CONS: The elevators are questionably safe. One was out most of the time, and sometimes guests were directed to the service elevator as an alternate, although many didn't because the sign directing you to it was small. I witnessed on many occasions the doors shut on hotel guests. Very hard to push back open, especially for the many elderly asian women I saw staying there. (It closed on me, so I know the effort needed to pry them open) Also, the elevators would often not stop flush with the floor. You really need to watch your step everytime you got on or off. Didn't know what was going to happen next with them.
Chambermaids and staff start yelling at each other outside your door at 7AM. As much as I appreciate not farting my day away in Hawaii, I also looked forward to cataching up on some much needed sleep on my vacay. They are way louder than the street noise you hear. (They do leave you with one set or earplugs btw- four of us in the room)
Maid didn't come to our room until close to 5PM. Very crappy if you wanted to "freshen up" befrore dinner or have a nap.
Very small pool. And the vent covers for the pool are wonky. Everytime someone jumps in the water, the waves cause the cover to flip. My daughter stepped in unwittingly and bruised her leg. Also, because it backs onto the service doors of some restaurants at the International Centre, alot of trash ends up in and around the pool. We were also greeted to the area regularily with empty beer cans and cigarette butts. Staff seems to rarely come to the pool area to maintain. Some days are nasty. Plus THE POOL CLOSES AT 5PM!!! WTF? I don't really understand that. People will leave the pool eventually anyway because once the sun goes down, or gets blocked, the water becomes too cold anyway, so what's the big deal?
DA BIG KAHUNA Restaurant is attached to the hotel. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! Take a walk a block in either direction and you'll find plenty of better restaurants with better food and prices. They intice you into the place with $2 Mai-tie drinks. (The best part of this place, although the guy getts annoying after a while) I wasn't feeling well, and wanted soup. Besides the fact that they forgot to write it down when they took our order (servers were two girls that both looked 15) and I had to order it again, the bowl it came in was about a half inch deep. More of a plate. Stone cold. Tasted like slop with some chunky raw veggies chopped up. Wings were soggy, not crispy. Salad was limp.
Also avoid the "Hello Kitty" all you can eat steak restaurant a block up. I guess I didn't tip enough (15%- it's a buffet) they upped it on my credit card.
Watch where you eat at the food court in the International Centre. Look at the awning above, and avoid areas where streams of bird crap have collected. Most of it drops down to the tables below. I'll try and post a picture.
We (family of 4) returned from a week's stay a week ago today. We arrived January 4th. Our kids, 14, and 11.We had a small tv in our room. The one beside us had a much larger one. But our ocean view more than made up for it. Beds were fantastic.
In summary, it's not a five star, but it's pretty good. The price is right, the bathrooms are nice, the beds are clean. I would absolutely stay here again. Love the staff and the amentites for the price. I just hope they fix the elevators and maintain the pool better.
Room Tip: Try and get a room high up. We were on the 15th and didn't hear any street noise. We had a beaut...

Aloha and mahalo for your very detailed review of the Waikiki Wave.
I am so happy that you found our hotel to be clean and friendly despite being located centrally in the middle of Waikiki. Our Housekeeping team works diligently to provide a clean room for all of our guests and take great pride in doing so. The lobby is the first impression for many of our guests and we try extra hard to maintain it in the spotless condition you mentioned. Moving hundreds of guests every day poses its challenges, but our Lobby team goes the extra mile. I will share your comments about Michael and explain how we all need to make that extra effort whenever possible.
You will be happy to know that our modernization program for the elevators is on schedule and everyone will benefit from that. The pool is what it is, and it speaks for itself. Being only a block away from the Pacific Ocean provides a great opportunity to enjoy the fresh tropical breezes and the warm ocean water. Many of our guests don’t even realize that we do have a pool because they enjoy themselves so much at the beach. I will share with our Maintenance team that they should be regularly cleaning the pool area and I apologize for the mess that you encountered. That is not acceptable at any pool, much less ours at the Waikiki Wave.
The Big Kahuna has been there for years and offers a variety of local dishes that many patrons enjoy. With all of the other selections for eateries around the hotel, it’s a nice stop for those that are tired from touring the island all day. Sometime this week, I am going to give a copy of this review to the owner of Big Kahunas so that he can appreciate the effort you put forth in writing these comments. Many reviews are very brief at best without much supporting statements or descriptions. You have taken the time and the effort to put a very descriptive montage of your experience at the Aqua Waikiki Wave and that in itself is a breath of fresh air for me.
I try to respond in a timely manner to ALL of the reviews we have, because I respect people who appreciate the time allocated to write reviews and also to send a reply. I appreciate you noticing the timeliness in my responses to all the reviews. If someone took the time to write a review, the least I can do is respond in a timely manner. We work with all of our Team members to treat this hotel as if it were their home, and that all of our guests are family to them. Although we might miss the mark on occasion, for the most part everyone shares the ‘aloha spirit’ with us.
Thank you again for your review. I will share this with the appropriated departments and if you choose to stay with us at a future time, contact me directly so that I may personally assist you.
A hui hou, (a who-ee hoe) until we meet again,
