“Great Location & Rates”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

Stayed here Feb 7-12. The hotel is located right in the middle of EVERYTHING in Waikiki. The staff are SUPER FRIENDLY and helpful. We were expecting it to be really noisy based on the reviews we read, but it was not a problem at all! We're used to city noise, so we didn't even have to use the earplugs provided. My 20 month old toddler was not even affected by whatever noise there was. Everyone slept like a baby. There is food within steps of the hotel and shopping is just the next block over on Kalakaua Avenue. All the brand names you can think of is on Kalakaua Ave. like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Hermes, Bulgari, etc. So if you want to save on hotel so you can spend on shopping, this is a great hotel to stay in. Only thing is that there are some steps leading up to the hotel, we had a stroller which we had to carry up and down everytime. And there's a few more steps if you are coming from the parking garage. Ice machine is on the 1st floor, so you have to take the elevator (which takes forever) everytime you want ice. But, if you're coming back to the hotel and heading to your room, stop at the Front Desk to ask for a plastic bag so that you can go get your ice and head back to your room and not have to 1st go to your room to get the ice bucket, then go get the ice. Other than that, we had an enjoyable stay there. OH! Except for the fire alarm going off and everyone had to evacuate. It was a false alarm.

Aloha,

As you found out, we are in the MIDDLE of everything in Waikiki. Our staff are the absolute BEST, we can’t be great all the time, but even on those challenging days, pretty good goes a long way also. We are constantly working with our Team Members to do everything in the ‘spirit of excellence’ and I think it’s settling in. How nice that everyone slept like a baby. Sometimes I wonder if I am just impervious to the noise, but it isn’t that bad all the time, and for the most part is very bearable.

I apologize for the inconvenience of the fire alarm, however, it is good to know that it works and that our safety procedures were followed by our Team Members. Our entry stairs to the property is what it is; although a drawback for some, it is the inherent design of the hotel and was there when we were blessed to manage the property. Having the ice machine on the first floor takes some adjusting, but once that is done, everything is like clockwork.
I appreciate the fact that you realized the savings you experienced on our great rate, could be applied to your purchases at the upper end stores that are only a few blocks from us on Kalakaua Avenue. Many of our guests just love to go to Ala Moana Mall or the stores in Waikiki, and the spacious rooms we have allows them to put ALL of their shopping bags just about anywhere they please when they get back.

Thank you again for your wonderful review, and contact me personally upon your return trip so that I may assist you in booking your reservation.

A hui hou (a who-ee hoe) until we meet again,

“NICE AND CLEAN”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012
1
person found this review helpful

If you are looking for a clean, friendly place to stay near the International Center, great restaurants, evening street performers and the beach, this will do fine. It does have it's quirks. We decided on it because A) There was a limited choice of affordable hotel rooms available because of Pro Bowl. B) We read these reviews on tripadvisor. Most of what I read is true. What I like is the fact that the hotel manager responds here. That shows me that she cares about the place.

PROS:
Spotless rooms. Location. Helpful and friendly staff, (although Michael at the front desk could make more of an effort to look in the back for clean beach towels, like all other front desk staff did.) Overall, staff is excellent. Lobby is spotless.

Gym. Small but good equipment variety.

CONS: The elevators are questionably safe. One was out most of the time, and sometimes guests were directed to the service elevator as an alternate, although many didn't because the sign directing you to it was small. I witnessed on many occasions the doors shut on hotel guests. Very hard to push back open, especially for the many elderly asian women I saw staying there. (It closed on me, so I know the effort needed to pry them open) Also, the elevators would often not stop flush with the floor. You really need to watch your step everytime you got on or off. Didn't know what was going to happen next with them.
Chambermaids and staff start yelling at each other outside your door at 7AM. As much as I appreciate not farting my day away in Hawaii, I also looked forward to cataching up on some much needed sleep on my vacay. They are way louder than the street noise you hear. (They do leave you with one set or earplugs btw- four of us in the room)
Maid didn't come to our room until close to 5PM. Very crappy if you wanted to "freshen up" befrore dinner or have a nap.

Very small pool. And the vent covers for the pool are wonky. Everytime someone jumps in the water, the waves cause the cover to flip. My daughter stepped in unwittingly and bruised her leg. Also, because it backs onto the service doors of some restaurants at the International Centre, alot of trash ends up in and around the pool. We were also greeted to the area regularily with empty beer cans and cigarette butts. Staff seems to rarely come to the pool area to maintain. Some days are nasty. Plus THE POOL CLOSES AT 5PM!!! WTF? I don't really understand that. People will leave the pool eventually anyway because once the sun goes down, or gets blocked, the water becomes too cold anyway, so what's the big deal?

DA BIG KAHUNA Restaurant is attached to the hotel. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! Take a walk a block in either direction and you'll find plenty of better restaurants with better food and prices. They intice you into the place with $2 Mai-tie drinks. (The best part of this place, although the guy getts annoying after a while) I wasn't feeling well, and wanted soup. Besides the fact that they forgot to write it down when they took our order (servers were two girls that both looked 15) and I had to order it again, the bowl it came in was about a half inch deep. More of a plate. Stone cold. Tasted like slop with some chunky raw veggies chopped up. Wings were soggy, not crispy. Salad was limp.
Also avoid the "Hello Kitty" all you can eat steak restaurant a block up. I guess I didn't tip enough (15%- it's a buffet) they upped it on my credit card.
Watch where you eat at the food court in the International Centre. Look at the awning above, and avoid areas where streams of bird crap have collected. Most of it drops down to the tables below. I'll try and post a picture.

We (family of 4) returned from a week's stay a week ago today. We arrived January 4th. Our kids, 14, and 11.We had a small tv in our room. The one beside us had a much larger one. But our ocean view more than made up for it. Beds were fantastic.

In summary, it's not a five star, but it's pretty good. The price is right, the bathrooms are nice, the beds are clean. I would absolutely stay here again. Love the staff and the amentites for the price. I just hope they fix the elevators and maintain the pool better.

Room Tip: Try and get a room high up. We were on the 15th and didn't hear any street noise. We had a beaut...

Aloha and mahalo for your very detailed review of the Waikiki Wave.

I am so happy that you found our hotel to be clean and friendly despite being located centrally in the middle of Waikiki. Our Housekeeping team works diligently to provide a clean room for all of our guests and take great pride in doing so. The lobby is the first impression for many of our guests and we try extra hard to maintain it in the spotless condition you mentioned. Moving hundreds of guests every day poses its challenges, but our Lobby team goes the extra mile. I will share your comments about Michael and explain how we all need to make that extra effort whenever possible.

You will be happy to know that our modernization program for the elevators is on schedule and everyone will benefit from that. The pool is what it is, and it speaks for itself. Being only a block away from the Pacific Ocean provides a great opportunity to enjoy the fresh tropical breezes and the warm ocean water. Many of our guests don’t even realize that we do have a pool because they enjoy themselves so much at the beach. I will share with our Maintenance team that they should be regularly cleaning the pool area and I apologize for the mess that you encountered. That is not acceptable at any pool, much less ours at the Waikiki Wave.
The Big Kahuna has been there for years and offers a variety of local dishes that many patrons enjoy. With all of the other selections for eateries around the hotel, it’s a nice stop for those that are tired from touring the island all day. Sometime this week, I am going to give a copy of this review to the owner of Big Kahunas so that he can appreciate the effort you put forth in writing these comments. Many reviews are very brief at best without much supporting statements or descriptions. You have taken the time and the effort to put a very descriptive montage of your experience at the Aqua Waikiki Wave and that in itself is a breath of fresh air for me.

I try to respond in a timely manner to ALL of the reviews we have, because I respect people who appreciate the time allocated to write reviews and also to send a reply. I appreciate you noticing the timeliness in my responses to all the reviews. If someone took the time to write a review, the least I can do is respond in a timely manner. We work with all of our Team members to treat this hotel as if it were their home, and that all of our guests are family to them. Although we might miss the mark on occasion, for the most part everyone shares the ‘aloha spirit’ with us.

Thank you again for your review. I will share this with the appropriated departments and if you choose to stay with us at a future time, contact me directly so that I may personally assist you.

“Location is it's best advantage”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Stayed at this hotel from Feb 4-Feb 11. Positives first. The location is one of the best. It's smack in the center of Waikiki. There's a bus stop right in front of the hotel which is very convenient. It's right beside the International Market. There are two Starbucks nearby. There's also a udon place across the street which served freshly made udon noodles though which explains the line that goes down the street. The rooms were big and we had 2 balconies. We were on a corner room in the second floor. Noise was not really a problem probably because we're used to being in the city. No need to use the free earplugs. The front desk was helpful in suggesting where to go and how to get there. They have an information sheet on what bus to take to the different spots. There was one staff who offered to help us with our bags on our way to the airport however I was on my last bag (7/8) so I said I'll handle it.

Negatives, there is a walk-up going to the hotel (around 9-10 steps) which makes it hard if you have large suitcases. Despite a lot of people complaining about it, they still haven't had a ramp installed. Service was average. It was not extraordinary as others have mentioned. When we checked out, I asked if I could use the phone in the reception to call the shuttle service but the front desk woman bluntly said that I couldn't. Check in was at 3pm which was quite a pain since we arrived at 7 in the morning from an 18-hour flight. No one offered to try to check us in a little earlier though this was expected. A little effort would have come a long way. Rooms were cleaned once or twice a day but expect only the beds to be fixed. Tables were very dusty.

Overall, it's a reasonable hotel with a reasonable price. It's perfect if it's your first time and when you're on a budget. The beach is about 2 blocks away. Restaurants all over the place. ABC stores in every corner. Bus can take you everywhere. No need to pay for the organized tours.

Room Tip: Get the bigger rooms. The prices are very reasonable

Aloha and mahalo for your review,

I agree with you, our location is very popular with so many of our guests. The udon restaurant across the street offers a reasonably priced meal with a healthy portion. Starbucks on both sides of the property help our guests maintain their caffeine levels in their bodies.
The arrival for our guests is still the same with a slight walk up as you have mentioned. Unfortunately a ramp is not feasible because of the layout of the entrance, however that is a small consideration to having such a great location. Check in at the majority of the hotels in Waikiki is 3 pm, with checkouts being at 12 noon. Did you inform our reservations agent that you would be arriving early in the morning after a very long, long flight? Normally, we try and accommodate all of our guests and I apologize that you were not able to check in earlier. With all of the restaurants and activities around our hotel, it sounds as if you had a good time end enjoyed all of the amenities we had to offer.

Please contact me upon your return booking so that I may personally assist you. Thank you again for taking the time out of your day to place a fair review of the Waikiki Wave in TripAdvisor.

“Location, location, location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Very good hotel. Motivated staff. Located 2 blocks from the beach in the heart of the Waikiki tourist neighborhood and right next to the International Market and its wonderful Food Court. Called hotel directly and their rate was less than Trevelocity, Expedia, etc.with only 1 night penalty for late cancellation of reservation. Some of the other sites would charge you the full stay amount. Call George ahead of time and he will pick out a good room for you. Elevators were a little slow.

Room Tip: Call ahead directly to the hotel and they will recommend the right room for your needs.

Aloha Robert and thank you for your review,

Thank you for mentioning George, he is so motivated when it comes to helping our guests. He goes above and beyond every time and always has a smile. Being located in the center of Waikiki offers our guests many options especially when it comes to eating. The food court offers everything from Korean to Japanese to Filipino to Mexican to American to Hawaiian and more. You could literally eat yourself around the world, right behind the hotel. We work with our staff constantly and sharing with them that they are the ‘aloha spirit’ and how they treat our guests will determine how our guests might enjoy their vacation.

We enjoyed our 6 night stay. The hotel was very comfortable. Frank at the front desk was very helpful. We would definitely stay at this hotel again as it was so close to the beach and the center of everything fun in Waikiki. Some reviewers mentioned noise as a problem. No problem for us.

Aloha Linda and thank you for your review,

I am so happy you found the hotel to your liking. Frank is one of our most popular Guest Service Agent at the Front Desk and has a wealth of information for our guests. Being a veteran that has been deployed for 3 tours abroad, Frank has a sincere appreciation for all of our guests and exudes with the Aloha Spirit.

Our location is one of our most popular features for many of our guests. Being walking distance from so many things, many families don’t have to rent a car or if they do it is only for a day or two.
