We let a 2-bedroom deluxe condo from Chris at Hawaiicondos.com. Booking process was easy, all questions promptly answered. My understanding was that this was someone's timeshare that they have sold. So- this is a timeshare resort. Be prepared for this and you should be ok.
We Aussies don't do the whole timeshare thing, so we had an awareness that there might be a marketing pitch at some point, but we were a little naive. We approached the "activities desk" asking for advice about catching buses.....well, we were promised a whole lot of very important 'local' knowledge, so we sat down. Big mistake. After 30min of what was largely useless information (only confirmed by us after we followed some advice and did a trip to Chinatown....DO NOT GO TO CHINATOWN!- we had our 2 kids with us, and we felt lucky to get out of there with bags and purses intact!)....the big spin came- we will pay you $150 to attend a 90min presentation, "go on you have nothing to lose!". Uumm, well yes, we would lose 90min of our precious holiday time to put ourselves through your marketing spin...no thanks. Oh, and our original question...buses, was left unanswered.
Pro's: large 2-bedroom condo's, well located amongst restaurants and shops, short cab/bus ride to Ala Moana, short walk to beach, good value. Nice pool area, nice hot tub.
Con's: ask for a high floor. There is a pub/bar downstairs that has live bands. Ask for a beachwalk view- or you face a carpark. Avoid the "activities desk"....they are timeshare salespeople in disguise.
We kind of got lucky- we got a condo on the 7th floor. But then we were facing the highly unattractive carpark. We dealt with this and reconciled it with ourselves that the price we paid for the week was still a good deal by Waikiki standards and the condo is huge....and the obvious, we didn't spend much time there anyway!....too much to do in Waikiki. And we also value sleep over a view, so we dealt with the lesser of the 2 evils!.
I think this property is great for families due to the size of the condo's. If I were a couple- forget it!...so many nicer properties on the beach. If you want a 'quiet' stay- there were nights we could hear the bands in the bar/pub from the 7th floor (yes- lani doors shut!)...but then none of Waikiki is quiet, if you want quiet, don't stay in Waikiki!
Room Tip: Definitely ask for high floor and street view. Avoid activities desk, do your own research on-line.
