“Have definitely had better”

Wife & sister stayed at this hotel before & found it great but this time, the wife and I ended up in a room that required uplifting big tiime. Floor had a carpet which was stained along with a old chesterfield that should be replaced. Location itself was at the back where the noise was constant and when we added in the sirens, fire trucks, the odd fight and the local disco which went on until 4:00am., sleep was tricky. They do not have a front desk on the main floor other than a security officer but he is not part of the hotel staff itself and he is definitely not there to help. We asked if he could call a taxi for us and was advised that that was not his job and to get one, we should stand on the street and wave one down when it was going by. When asked about the bus service, we were told to check with the people at the bus stop and they could probably answer our questions. Definitely not the best place hotel I've stayed at and will not go there again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front are apparently better.

“RK Redux”

Just returned from our 4th visit to the Royal Kuhio. We had a super-clean studio on the 26th floor. It was all great with the only exception being the temperature of the pool. For such a large complex that was sold out, I'm sure the pool temperature can be raised a few degrees without undue expense to the owners/managers. The pool staff have an annoying tendency to clear the pool mid afternoon to add chemicals. It would seem more appropriate to perform this function late evening or early morning. Otherwise, we were happy with our stay at the RK. On a funny note, there was a day where an Asian man was seen walking the premises in his undies. Some people were offended, but I imagine he might have lost his luggage.

Room Tip: Book your stay early in the year. We waited until September and were lucky to get 2 weeks, and tha...

“Home base for a busy vacation.”

My husband and I shared the "accessible" 9th floor, one-bedroom with another couple. It was tight but do-able, since we spent most of our time exploring Oahu.

You will love the location. Just a couple blocks to the beach, shopping, bars, Starbucks, everything! It was great having the kitchen; we made breakfast every morning, and a couple dinners which helped us stick to the budget.

If privacy is a concern, you may not want to share a room. We slept on the queen-sized bed and the other couple had the fold-out couch in the living room. The two rooms can be separated by sliding doors, but you must walk through the bedroom to access the bathroom.

The deck was really only comfortable for two people. Good view of other high rise hotels.

My preference is typically to stay either in more trendy, historic or upscale accommodations. The Royal Kuhio is not really any of these, although it probably had its day. The lobby is large but empty feeling, all white and tiled. The rooms aren't really updated but they have a tropical feel. The hotel is clean and seems to be maintained fine. Our parking space was included with the room through VI.

We stayed here because a family member generously donated their VI points to us! For virtually free, this was awesome.

“1st Hawaiian Trip Ever”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

This is a self-maintained condo unit that is a good place to crash after a full day of whatever you came to Oahu to do. We like to spend our money on ourselves and not the restaurants and watering holes every day, so, we go to the local market and pick up some groceries and have breakfast and dinner in our unit. Everything in Hawaii is more expensive and most of the restaurant food is OK but not like on the mainland, so for the money its better not to eat out everyday. About the unit: we landed a few hours later than expected but found the security guard very friendly and helpful (of course we called ahead to notify them of our arrival time). Additionally, you should read the review written by gggilmore "Decent Place to Stay" [on GOOGLE] because it hits the nail on the head and we see no reason to improve upon it. The security system is odd but it works. Our only complaint was that being on the 11th floor facing Kuhio Avenue, you do hear all the street level noise because it can only go up due to the number of hi-rises surrounding the building. We went in December, the week before Christmas, so the local kids were off from school and across the street is a 24/7 Mickey D's that attracts them in the wee hours. Closing the windows and turning on the room AC units provided some relief but we really were too tired from running all day to stay awake. You probably won't experience the noise on the back side of the building complex as it faces an alley and is further from the main street. If you have TOO MUCH $$$ and want to be pampered then this location is definitely not for you; however, if you want to be in the middle of everything and don't mind some minor housekeeping chores, then you can't beat the Royal Kuhio. We would definitely stay here again and again. MAHALO and ALOHA

Room Tip: Units facing the canal will probably be quieter at night!
